A gunman who fatally shot at least 12 people, including two children, in Montenegro has killed himself while surrounded by police, officials said Thursday. At least four others were wounded in the shooting rampage in the western town of Cetinje on Wednesday that followed a bar brawl, officials said. The shooter, identified as 45-year-old Aco Martinović, killed the owner of the bar, the bar owner’s children and his own family members, Interior Minister Danilo Šaranović said. Wednesday’s shooting was the second shooting rampage over the past three years in Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic capital. An attacker killed 10 people, including two children, in August 2022 before he was shot and killed by a passerby in Cetinje.

Podgorica, Montenegro Reuters —A man shot dead 12 people in a rampage in a small town in Montenegro before dying from self-inflicted injuries early on Thursday, authorities said, in one of the tiny Balkan nation’s worst mass killings. He then shot dead eight people, including two children, at three other locations, prosecutor Andrijana Nastic said. The incident is the second shooting in three years in the same town 38 km (24 miles) west of the capital Podgorica. After an altercation with patrons in the restaurant he went home, took a weapon, returned to the restaurant and started shooting, police said. Despite strict gun laws, the Western Balkans composed of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia, remain awash with weapons.

Podgorica, Montenegro AP —Several people were killed in a shooting on Wednesday in the Montenegrin city of Cetinje, police and local media said. Police dispatched special troops to search for the armed shooter in Cetinje, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) northwest of the capital Podgorica. A statement said the man opened fire in a bar and fled the scene armed. The state RTCG television said seven people were killed in the shooting that followed a bar brawl. He then went to another site where he killed the bar owner’s children and a woman, the report added.
