Al Pacino wrote in his new memoir that he thought "The Godfather" would be "the worst picture ever made." Advertisement"The Godfather" is one of the most iconic movies of all time, but Al Pacino said that he thought it would be "the worst picture ever made." But he was the one responsible for me being in the film," Pacino wrote, referring to Coppola's decision to cast him to play the lead character, Michael Corleone. "The Godfather" was nominated for 11 Oscars, including best supporting actor for Pacino and best director for Coppola. The film won three for: best writing for Coppola and co-author Mario Puzo, best picture, and a best actor for Marlon Brando.

“Joker: Folie à Deux,” a genre-bending sequel to the billion-dollar comic book smash, hit a sour note at the box office even as it opened to No. That’s a problem because the R-rated sequel carries a substantial $200 million price tag (the first film was produced for a trim $65 million). So, “Folie à Deux” needs to generate at least $450 million to break even, according to sources familiar with the film’s financials. Muted buzz for “Folie à Deux” began at Venice Film Festival, where “Joker” took home the fest’s top prize in 2019. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga attend the Los Angeles premiere of "Joker: Folie a Deux" on Sept. 30.

When Netflix released a rundown of its most-watched movies and TV shows for the first half of the year on Thursday, its TV rankings offered few surprises. (Netflix bases the data on hours viewed for every title — original and licensed — that was watched for over 50,000 hours.) That robust landing page has allowed Netflix to eschew spending tens of millions of dollars promoting many of its original films. After almost two decades of failed attempts to reopen, a landmark Upper West Side movie theater may be resurrected with a plan from a potential new buyer and celebrity support. They have formed the Upper West Side Cinema Center, a nonprofit corporation, whose website lists Martin Scorsese, Ethan Hawke and John Turturro as advisers, along with Bob Balaban, Griffin Dunne and the “American Psycho” director Mary Harron. (They would call it the Metro Cinema Center.) Representatives for Scorsese and Dunne confirmed their involvement. The proposal includes a five-screen theater dedicated to art house releases, classic film and special events; it would also have an education center and a cafe.

Ti West Is Turning Hollywood Into a Horror Show
  + stars: | 2024-07-06 | by ( Ryan Bradley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The Vista is a 101-year-old single-screen movie theater, one of the last of its kind in Los Angeles. For Tarantino, that film was “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in which two working actors stumble through the Hollywood of 1969, as one film era crashes into another. For West, it is “X” and “Pearl” and the trilogy’s final film, the newly released “MaXXXine.” These are, like most of West’s films, nominally horror movies. But they are also much stranger and more slippery than that label might suggest. In all three films, the horror stems from the characters’ drive toward stardom and their ruthless, sometimes psychotic ambition, which is fully unleashed by the possibilities of the silver screen.

Thanks to de-aging technology, De Niro portrayed Sheeran throughout his life, the lines on his face digitally smoothed. There are a few ways to make actors appear younger on screen using technology, each with advantages and disadvantages. In 2019’s “Gemini Man," the younger version of Will Smith’s character Henry Brogan has a fully CGI head. There’s an excruciating bit in “The Irishman” when a supposedly young Sheeran kicks another character out of his shop. This, really, is why de-aging megastars always feels a bit icky.

Known as the "King of the B Movies," the legendary filmmaker Roger Corman died on May 9 at the age of 98. Corman specialized in making low-budget genre movies with titles like "The Wasp Woman," "Attack of the Crab Monsters," and "Teenage Caveman." Corman hired these directors in the early stages of their careers to helm low-budget features that the filmmakers have acknowledged as learning experiences they applied in their later larger-scale productions. In fact, many of these directors hired Corman in small acting roles in movies like "The Godfather Part II," (Coppola), "The Silence of the Lambs" (Demme), and "Apollo 13" (Ron Howard). In the interview, Corman shares myriad lessons learned while working in the film industry for more than 60 years.
