The revelations about Ryan Wesley Routh emerged Monday, a day after a Secret Service agent rousted him from a hiding place at the West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course where Trump had been playing. Trump was on the fifth fairway and not in Routh’s line of sight when the agent “engaged” the suspect, said Ronald Rowe, acting director of the Secret Service. In 2002, court records show, Routh was convicted of illegally possessing a machine gun. Court records for a person named Ryan Routh also show a 2003 divorce, along with multiple civil judgments after contractors and individuals sued a roofing company he helped run. Routh disparaged Trump as a “fool” and a “buffoon,” but he credited him for reaching out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump was whisked away to safety, unharmed, while the gunman, who officials believe remained near the tree-line perimeter of the golf course for 12 hours, fled the scene by car. Phone records from T-Mobile that indicated Routh’s phone was “in the vicinity of the golf course” for roughly 12 hours before he was first spotted by US Secret Service, according to charging documents. It’s still not clear why Routh went to the golf course that day. Lochlan Nicol, 15, of Jensen Beach, Fla., was biking to a gas station and convenience store near his home to buy ice cream last week when a driver heading in the opposite direction suddenly turned into the station and hit him, he said. It was about 10:30 p.m. on May 22, and Lochlan was hit so hard that his head crashed through the rear passenger-side window, breaking his nose, cheekbone and eye socket, and knocking him unconscious. The driver pulled Lochlan out of the road, left him outside the gas station and then drove away, according to Sheriff William D. Snyder of Martin County. What the driver didn’t know was that he had driven away with a tracking device — the AirPod that Lochlan had been wearing, which had been knocked out of his ear and had lodged under a floor mat inside the car, Sheriff Snyder said.

The office of Republican Senate Leader Phil Berger did not immediately respond Monday to emails seeking comment on the lawsuit. The “Black Belt” counties of eastern North Carolina have significant and politically cohesive populations of Black voters who overwhelmingly support Democratic candidates, the lawsuit states. A white majority in the surrounding area is also politically cohesive, and the plaintiffs argue they historically vote as a bloc to defeat candidates supported by Black voters. One of those districts, Senate District 2, where Pierce and Matthews reside, stretches more than 160 miles from the Virginia border down parts of the Atlantic coastline. Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue, a Wake County Democrat, said the lawsuit provides “a glimmer of hope” to Black voters in eastern North Carolina.

Joseph Prezioso | Afp | Getty ImagesThe world's ocean temperatures have climbed to their hottest level on record, according to data from the European Union's climate monitor, prompting scientists to warn of immediate and wide-ranging consequences for the planet. The surface temperature of the world's oceans would typically be expected to reach their highest in March rather than in August, sparking alarm among climate scientists. "The recent ocean warming is genuinely concerning," said Rowan Sutton, professor of climate science at the University of Reading. Sutton said that the latest sea surface temperature data showed that "we may be experiencing not just a record-breaking extreme event but a record-shattering one." The ocean heat record comes as part of a recent trend of extreme heat stretching across the globe, with this July poised to be recognized as the hottest month in history.

The existing record for the hottest ocean surface temperature is 99.7, which was reached in Kuwait Bay in the Persian Gulf. "These buoys that are inside Florida Bay — so that's to the north of the Florida Keys and to the South Florida peninsula — they're all in very shallow, murky, dark water," Berardelli told CNBC. "Because it's murky, and because it's contaminated with sediment, the water temperatures are reflective of the fact that darker surfaces absorb more heat."

The deal represents a doubling down by Ovintiv on the Permian, where exploration in many areas still promises lucrative returns. Ovintiv will pay cash and also use some of its stock as currency for the deal, the sources said. If the negotiations conclude successfully, a deal could be announced as early as this week, the sources said, cautioning that no deal is certain. The deal will boost the percentage of Ovintiv's production coming from oil, at a time of low natural gas prices. The deal comes as EnCap is attempting to raise a new fund focused on investments in oil and gas production, its first since 2017, sources told Reuters in November.
