New York CNN —Fox News anchor Bret Baier is all too keenly aware that Fox’s viewers want him to affirm what they already feel. And his recent social media activity shows that he is supremely aware of the Fox base’s extreme disdain for Harris and distrust of the media. Baier, the anchor of Fox’s 6 p.m. “Special Report” newscast, is also the network’s chief political anchor. But because the Arizona call presaged Trump’s defeat, Fox was scolded and second-guessed by many of its own viewers, including the sitting president. One X user told Baier they believed that the interview will “be pre recorded and the answers will be edited.

Past debate footage reveals that both generally veer away from personal attacks and prefer loftier rhetoric to digging deeply into specific facts to establish policy credibility. Their past debate opponents said they didn’t always provide direct answers to questions. In both the primary and general election debates, Vance often stuck to policy areas he felt most comfortable with: immigration, the economy and drug control. According to those interviews and evidence from his past debates, Vance, a Yale Law School graduate, seems to enjoy getting into verbal volleys. Shortly after Tuesday night's ABC News presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump, Swift posted her long-awaited endorsement of Harris' campaign on Instagram. At the time, he said he had "no idea" about Swift's endorsement. He had more to say on Wednesday, however, when he told "Fox & Friends" that he isn't "a Taylor Swift fan." Despite his criticism of Swift, Trump has previously tried to use the pop star in his campaign messaging. For their part, the Harris-Walz campaign wasted no time churning out merch after Swift's endorsement — launching a pack of two friendship bracelets for $20.

The Harris campaign, exuding confidence after Harris baited Trump on stage Tuesday night, immediately said she would agree to a second debate with the ex-president. “When you win the debate, I don’t, I don’t know that I want to do another debate,” Trump said in a phone interview Wednesday morning on Fox News. Speaking with the hosts of “Fox & Friends,” Trump insulted Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, the two anchors that Fox has pitched as potential debate moderators in October. The Harris campaign, however, wants the vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance to happen next. Trump on Wednesday also assailed ABC after the debate moderators fact-checked the former president in real-time during the prime time Philadelphia matchup.

The network pitched two of its anchors, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, as moderators, which Trump agreed to in his Truth Social post. In a tweet posted Saturday, the vice president said, "It’s interesting how 'any time, any place' becomes 'one specific time, one specific safe space.' Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who spoke at the Harris rally, said Trump was “too scared” to debate the vice president. He’s scared.

Mr. Trump said that the Fox News debate would have a live audience; the previous debate between President Biden and Mr. Trump was hosted by CNN in an empty venue. New York CNN —Fox News has proposed a presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris on September 17. It’s not clear if that debate will still take place now that Biden has dropped out of the race. Trump has also expressed displeasure at ABC and has previously posted that he wants Fox News to host the debate instead of the Disney-owned network. In a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Trump said he “absolutely” wants to debate Harris, and “would be willing to do more than one debate, actually.”“I haven’t agreed to anything. I think debating’s important for a presidential race, I really do, you sort of have an obligation to debate.”

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Fox News has invited Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to debate each other in Pennsylvania on Sept. 17, according to copies of the letters obtained by CNBC. The invitation comes a day after Trump said he would be willing to debate Harris, the newly minted de facto Democratic nominee, multiple times on a call with reporters. The Harris and Trump campaigns did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on whether they would accept the invite. The debate would serve as a redemption opportunity for Democrats, following President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance in June.

Mike Pence, Donald J. Trump’s former vice president, indicated on Friday that he would not be falling into line behind the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, as some of Mr. Trump’s other previous rivals including Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy and Tim Scott did. When asked whether he would endorse Mr. Trump now that the former president had clinched the party’s nomination, Mr. Pence said on Fox News that he “could not in good conscience” support him. “It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year,” he told Martha MacCallum on her talk show “The Story.”The former vice president declined to say whether he would vote for Mr. Trump in the November election, but answered, “I would never vote for Joe Biden.” He also ruled out running as a third-party or independent candidate for president, saying he remained a Republican.

Barsky, a former sleeper agent for Soviet intelligence in the 1970s and 1980s, told Fox News' Martha MacCallum on Monday that the practice of arresting Americans for this purpose is "nothing new." Fox held separate pre-Iowa town halls for DeSantis and Haley, but at 6 p.m. before prime time. Frustration boiled over when DeSantis' campaign manager, James Uthmeier, felt that a Fox graphic didn't show the extent of the candidate's appearances in Iowa. Asked by Ainsley Earhardt if she would withdraw if she lost New Hampshire, Haley said she would not. “I don't care how much y'all want to coronate Donald Trump,” Haley said. “I don't need any advice from RINO Kayleigh McEnany on Fox,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, referencing the conservative slur Republican in Name Only.

So … how did you like the big Donald Trump interview on Fox News? No insights into current affairs more thrilling than a few vague references to Hunter Biden. It’s amazing that Fox News let its guest get through an hourlong interview without prodding him about the Jan. 6 riot. There, the defense claims that Trump couldn’t be charged with any crimes since he was the president at the time. Really — the argument is that you can’t prosecute a guy for trying to overturn the government while he’s in the government.

The raucous two-hour debate offered a view of the deep challenges the contenders face in seeking to dislodge Trump from his perch at the top of the field. The debate took place a day before Trump planned to surrender in Atlanta to face charges he sought to overturn his election loss in the state. That led to a sharp back-and-forth between Christie, Trump's biggest critic among Republican candidates, and Ramaswamy, Trump's most ardent defender. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll released this month, Trump held 47% of the Republican vote nationally, with DeSantis dropping six percentage points from July to 13%. Moderators Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier, both Fox News hosts, started the debate by asking about the U.S. economy.

What do you think it means?” MacCallum asked in the opening question of the evening. The first question wasn’t about former Republican President Donald Trump, indicted four times, about to face arraignment in Georgia in less than 24 hours. And even when Baier and MacCallum confronted the candidates with some of their more strenuous questions, they themselves appeared to do so reluctantly. Take the issue of Trump, a topic that went noticeably unaddressed for nearly the first hour of the debate. Of course, it is clear why Fox News preferred to avoid the topic of Trump.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. Any debate that doesn’t feature Chris Christie at the front of the highlight reel is a bad night for Christie.

Donald Trump's absence led to a night of barbs between the remaining GOP presidential hopefuls. The first presidential debate of this cycle was dominated by attacks on Vivek Ramaswamy. Despite getting attacked on all sides by his fellow candidates, Ramaswamy largely held his own on stage Wednesday, drawing large rounds of applause from the crowd throughout the night. Former President Donald Trump said he felt no need to attend a debate while he holds a double-digit national lead. Namely, DeSantis refused to say if he'd support a federal 6-week abortion policy, simply saying ""I'm gonna stand on the side of life."

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis listens to a question from the audience at a campaign town hall meeting in Newport, New Hampshire, U.S., August 19, 2023. In Trump's absence, candidates are expected to launch a fusillade of attacks on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, as competitors try to displace him as Trump's top challenger, according to strategists and aides to rival campaigns. DeSantis is seen as vulnerable after a summer slide in the polls, which have left him languishing more than 30 points behind Trump in the race. "He's going to be a punching bag," said Brian Darling, a Republican strategist and former senior aide to U.S. Still, Trump's no-show doesn't mean he won't be a major presence in the debate, which kicks off at the Fiserv Forum at 9 p.m.

Eight contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination will take the stage Wednesday in Milwaukee for their first primary debate, seeking to grab voters' attention. But the shadow of Donald Trump, who is skipping the debate, will loom large over the event. The challenge for the the eight candidates will be to grab some of the spotlight on the crowded stage and chip away support from Trump—and show that they are truly in the running for the nomination. The two-hour debate at the Fiserv Forum will start at 9 p.m. ET and be moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum of Fox News.

It was an unusual litmus test for a Republican primary debate, one that quickly descended into personal attacks and obfuscation: The candidates were asked whether humans had contributed to climate change. There is no scientific dispute that the answer is yes, but hardly any of the Republican candidates gave a straight answer. “Look, we’re not schoolchildren,” he said, rejecting the idea of a show-of-hands response. “Let’s have the debate.”The line of questioning from the moderators, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, was about the devastating wildfires in Maui and a recent tropical storm that caused flooding in Southern California. They mentioned rising ocean temperatures and played a clip from a young conservative, who asked how the Republicans running for president could assuage young people’s concerns about climate change.

If newsrooms somehow didn’t comprehend what Fox News really was before that explosive lawsuit, there isn’t an excuse now. Most outlets still haven’t worked up the courage to describe Fox News as a “right-wing channel.” The WaPo on Tuesday didn’t even refer to the outlet’s prime time bloc of Donald Trump propagandists in such terms. It should not be difficult or controversial to describe Fox News as right-wing. The channel has evolved in disturbing ways, having morphed from a traditionally conservative news network into a MAGA propaganda monster. At this point, failing to point out this unsightly reality might just say more about those media outlets than Fox News itself.
