Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday said that he supports restricting “single-sex facilities” in the Capitol, including restrooms, to “individuals of that biological sex”— which would effectively ban the first transgender congresswoman from using women’s bathrooms in the next Congress. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution this week that would ban transgender women from using women's bathrooms and other facilities at the Capitol. She said Tuesday the bill "absolutely" targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. In a statement posted to X on Wednesday, McBride wrote, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars."

Members of the Hispanic and LGBTQ communities are being targeted with these kinds of disturbing text messages by people hiding behind anonymous phone numbers. Now, authorities are investigating cases in which other groups of people are reportedly getting text messages saying they have been "selected for deportation or to report to a re-education camp." The language of the text messages sent to these students were not identical, but they all referenced deportations and actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE does not send "random text messages to people," the spokesperson said in a phone interview. "Sending text messages in the blind is not how us Immigration Customs Enforcement operates.

Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday left the door open to adjourning Congress so President-elect Donald Trump can appoint his Cabinet nominees outside of the usual Senate confirmation process if necessary. Both chambers usually gavel in for pro forma sessions even during times of recess specifically to prevent the president from making recess appointments and bypassing congressional approval. President Barack Obama once tried to use recess appointments and was rebuked by the Supreme Court, which said in 2014 that recesses needed to be 10 days or longer for recess appointments to be legal. Johnson isn’t the only Trump ally who has left the door open to using a recess appointment to confirm Trump’s Cabinet picks. “I have literally not discussed one word about the ethics report, not once, and I’ve been with him quite a bit this week,” Johnson said.

Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s attorney on Sunday confirmed to NBC News that Hegseth, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named as his candidate for defense secretary, paid a woman an undisclosed amount after she accused him of sexual assault. “In 2023, Hegseth paid the complainant as part of a civil confidential settlement agreement and maintains his innocence,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, said in a statement. He also denied that the encounter between Hegseth and an unnamed woman, which she alleges happened in 2017, was sexual assault. Parlatore’s statement comes after The Washington Post on Saturday reported that a friend of Hegseth’s accuser sent a memo to the Trump transition team detailing the allegations. Authorities in Monterey investigated the allegation in 2017 and did not file charges against Hegseth.

"I have said that there's, there's some positives to vaccinations. And if it isn't vaccines, there's no -- nothing wrong with actually taking a hard look and finding out, is that's what's causing it? Recess appointments would allow the president-elect to place the House and Senate into recess so that he could appoint his nominees without having to go through the traditional Senate confirmation process. It's something that the Senate strives to avoid and it's why the chamber gavels into pro-forma sessions even while they're in recess. "It'd be the absolute last resort," Mullin told Welker.

Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey announced Friday that he would seek to become the Garden State's next governor, entering what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field. Gottheimer has represented his state's 5th Congressional District, which lies in northern New Jersey, bordering New York, since 2017. But one distinguishing feature of his campaign, Gottheimer said, is that he is "focused like a laser beam on the need to lower your taxes and lower your costs." "He stands up for what he believes, and you can count on him to deliver," Berry said in the campaign video. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., who has served alongside Gottheimer since 2019, is another name that has been floated in the state as a potential candidate in next year's race.

One of the demands he outlined is the ability to make recess appointments, which would allow the president to appoint people to senior administration positions and bypass Senate confirmation. But all we’re saying is, ‘preserve everything,’ so we, the Congress, who have a constitutional duty to do oversight, can see everything,” Jordan added. Asked specifically multiple times whether Jordan would call on Smith to testify, Jordan repeatedly dodged the question, saying simply, “Maybe that’s been the norm, but we’re not taking anything off the table. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Sunday defended keeping Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the Supreme Court, after some Democrats have reportedly considered pressuring her to step down while President Joe Biden is still in office. He added that he’s heard “a little bit” of talk from Democratic senators about asking Sotomayor, who is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, to step aside. Sonia Sotomayor, who is 70, is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. If Sotomayor were to die during Trump’s term, she would likely be replaced by a conservative justice, pushing the now 6-3 conservative court further to the right. She died in September 2020 and Trump, then serving his first term, appointed the conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett to replace her, leading to the court’s current conservative makeup.

President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump will meet at the White House on Wednesday morning, officials announced on Saturday. The two will meet in the Oval Office at 11 a.m. that day, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the days following her loss, both Biden and Harris committed to a peaceful transfer of power. Trump explicitly did not invite Biden to meet at the White House in 2020, forgoing a custom that Trump participated in with then-President Barack Obama in 2016.

In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Jonathan Allen explains why Democrats need to retool their economic message during Donald Trump's second term. Plus, senior national politics reporter Matt Dixon writes that the battle to succeed Trump in four years is already underway. How Trump broke both parties — and where Democrats go from hereBy Jonathan AllenOver the course of the last decade, President-elect Donald Trump broke both national political parties. Before Trump, Democrats nominated — and the country twice elected — Barack Obama, a candidate who ran against leaders that walked the country into forever wars and a finance-and-housing crisis that nearly toppled the economy. Harris’ economic policy offerings were largely expansions of Biden proposals, such as more generous homebuyer and child tax credits than he called for.

Cruz was boosted by gains he made among Latino voters in the Lone Star state, according to NBC News exit polls. Cruz, 53, fought back, seeking in the final weeks of the campaign to paint Allred as wanting to allow boys to play in girls sports. In the end, Allred’s campaign spent more than $50 million on ads in the race, just between Labor Day and Election Day, according to AdImpact. North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein defeated scandal-plagued Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in the state’s gubernatorial race, NBC News projects, keeping the seat in Democrats’ hands. In other Facebook comments on a livestream from 2019, Robinson said abortion “is not about protecting the lives of mothers. Stein’s victory was boosted by female voters, college-educated voters and independents, a key group needed for victories in battleground races. Here's a look at some of the key counties to watch across the seven presidential battleground states, ordered by the state's final poll closing time (in Eastern Standard Time). Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. While Trump won it by 3 points in 2016, Biden won Maricopa by 2 points four years later. And that Democratic gain helped the party flip Wisconsin in 2020, given that Biden won the state by just 20,000 votes.
