Like AI images, which can bear hallmark signs of wonky anatomy, like too many teeth or fingers, the flamingo appeared headless as it bent its neck to scratch itself with its beak. To Astray’s surprise, it won both third place in the category — and the People’s Vote award. Creative Resource Collective did not comment on how their AI and non-AI photography categories are judged and vetted. As for the flamingo, Astray emphasized it was a serendipitous moment, not one that he sought out. It is simply the perfect shot for this because the scene is so unreal and for such a simple, natural reason: a flamingo scratching its belly.”

A growing realization that President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to hold snap elections in France may backfire sent the French stock market tumbling on Friday to its lowest level in two years, and prompted warnings from the French finance minister that the economy risks stumbling into a financial crisis. Amid growing signs that Marine Le Pen’s far-right party may be ushered to the brink of power, France’s benchmark stock index, the CAC 40, slumped 2.7 percent. The losses capped a weeklong losing streak that sent shares down more than 6 percent, wiping out all the bourse’s gains since the start of the year. Among the hardest hit stocks were France’s biggest banks, including BNP Paribas and Société Générale, which hold hefty amounts of French sovereign debt. Equally worrisome, the risk premium that investors demand to hold French government bonds over Germany’s, a eurozone benchmark, rose to the highest since 2017, the biggest weekly jump since 2012, when the euro debt crisis was underway.

The nation's central bank is once again leaving interest rates unchanged as it works to lower inflation. On Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee announced that it's holding its key interest rate benchmark steady in a range of 5.25% to 5.5%, continuing the pause that first began in September last year. The Summary of Economic Projections, released alongside the FOMC's interest rate decision, penciled in just one rate cut for 2024. "This housing-related inflation is directly driven by high interest rates: reducing rates will reduce the costs of renting, buying, and building housing, lowering Americans' single highest monthly expense," they wrote. "Lowering interest rates will likely also decrease the cost of auto insurance as well, which has risen due to factors completely unrelated to the cost of lending."

US stocks rose to fresh records Wednesday as traders took in cool inflation and Fed comments. AdvertisementUS stocks rose on Wednesday as investors took in cool inflation data and the Federal Reserve's latest guidance on rate cuts, helping the S&P 500 to another record close. The 10-year Treasury fell seven basis points to 6.33%, rising from steeper losses earlier in the day after the central bank updated its outlook to include fewer rate cuts than previously expected. FOMC members said they didn't believe it was "appropriate" to cut rates until they had gained more confidence inflation is trending back to 2%. Fed fund futures show that investors see a 62% chance the Fed will cut rates three times or more by year-end, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

French election shock hits stocks and the euro

London CNN —The decision by French President Emmanuel Macron to call a snap election after losing to the far right in a vote for European lawmakers roiled markets and the euro Monday. The first round of the French election is scheduled for June 30, followed by the second round on July 7. Under the French system, parliamentary elections are held to elect the 577 members of the lower house, the National Assembly. Higher yields indicate that investors want a bigger premium to buy French bonds given the political uncertainty. “A right-wing majority in the (French parliament) would hamper any reform plans.

Nvidia could one day dominate the U.S. stock market benchmark S & P 500 by a magnitude that has never been seen before, more than doubling the influence of past leaders like Apple and Nokia, along with current leader Microsoft. "History suggests NVDA could become 10-15% of S & P 500," wrote chip analyst Mark Lipacis in a note Friday. "We have observed that at each successive computing era, the ecosystem players represent a larger weighting of the S & P 500." Nvidia is already doing most of the heavy lifting for the S & P 500. The chipmaker is responsible for about 37% of the S & P 500's year-to-date 12% return.

Some analysts are eyeing zero rate cuts from the Fed this year. AdvertisementAfter the latest jobs report all but dismissed an interest rate cut in July, some analysts are taking it a step further, and expect no rate cuts at all this calendar year. That's more pessimistic than what investors continue to bet on, with fed fund futures indicating at least one 25-basis point rate cut to occur in 2024. According to market veteran Ed Yardeni, the Federal Reserve should "take a vacation," and leave interest rates unchanged through 2024, he told CNBC-TV18. AdvertisementMeanwhile, Catalyst Capital's David Miller agreed that the Fed shouldn't cut interest rates in 2024, citing that this would allow inflation to run hotter.

New Delhi CNN —Indian stocks plunged Tuesday as vote counting in the country’s election suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a landslide victory is at risk, raising doubts about his ability to push through more aggressive economic reforms. India’s benchmark Sensex index, which tracks 30 large companies, and the broader Nifty 50 index each closed down by nearly 6%. The worst daily drop for Indian stocks since 2020 came just 24 hours after both indexes hit record highs as weekend exit polls prompted experts to predict a resounding victory for Modi. The 73-year-old ran on his economic record over the past 10 years, a period of robust growth for India. But investors have complained about the high price of Indian stocks and some analysts believe a correction could be healthy for markets.

The Wagoneer S will test the appetite of Jeep customers for a fully electric model. It comes at a time of waning interest in electric vehicles, even as regulatory requirements for them become more stringent. The new Wagoneer S has a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape than the Jeep Wagoneer models sold today. Jeep is working on putting the Wagoneer S Trailhawk into production, Filosa said in an interview with CNN.

CNN —A squat, light-colored building in Tigard, Oregon, was supposed to be part of a game-changing new solution for the global plastics industry. And unlike mechanical recycling, where the quality of the product declines each time, chemical recycling promises virgin-quality plastics. Chemical company Dow says it plans to build multiple chemical recycling facilities in the US and Europe, adding as much as 600,000 tons (1.2 billion pounds) of recycling capacity by 2030. “Mechanical recycling simply uses less energy and chemicals than does chemical recycling, making it overall cheaper and less environmentally impactful,” she said. With that kind of industry pressure, said Congdon, it’s easy to see why chemical recycling may be attractive to policymakers.
