For many Muslims, Ramadan means abstaining from food and drink while at work. So, how can non-Muslim colleagues be supportive, while also not accidentally making a micro-aggression toward someone who is observing Ramadan? At one office where Nasr worked, a boss privately asked her if she needed any special accommodations while observing Ramadan. Most Muslims use the Arabic phrase "Ramadan Mubarak," which translates to "have a blessed Ramadan" or "happy Ramadan, to greet each other. Plus, there are many other reasons why Muslims don't fast, like during illness or travel.
ThredUP, an online clothing-consignment company, adopted a four-day workweek last year. He was intrigued by the four-day workweek and how it might help the company's 1,800 employees. In an employee survey last year of our corporate salaried employees, 93% of respondents agreed that the four-day workweek had improved their productivity. Prioritizing tasks and reducing meetings are keyThere were some growing pains in adopting the four-day workweek. The four-day workweek is helping us do that.
To wit, GM this week said it was axing roughly 500 salaried positions in performance-related job cuts. Business advisors who work with executives told Insider that companies conduct what are sometimes called "quiet layoffs" for two main reasons. Job cuts send a potent messageGM this week said it was axing roughly 500 salaried positions in performance-related job cuts. He recently told Insider that the widespread layoffs in tech are more likely due to companies parroting each other rather than necessary cost-cutting. In other words, a rival's announcement of job cuts gives other companies reason to follow suit.
In an Equity Talk, Nasenbenny talks about how mental health and addiction are DEI issues. The data has clearly demonstrated that everyone is affected by the current mental health and addiction crisis. Do you feel the CEOs at companies you provide insurance to actually care about mental health and addiction policies? We see a lot of individuals that come to us with claims who are on opioids or have a mental health condition, oftentimes an untreated mental health condition. If we see trends within one of our customers that suggest they have more addiction issues or mental health issues than other like-minded, similarly situated companies, we will bring that to their attention.
Xena Stryker left corporate America several years ago after feeling discriminated against. The company, Xena Design + Marketing Firm, has offices in Atlanta and Beverly Hills, California. At a previous job, I was the only Black woman at an architectural firm with hundreds of designers. I started my own company, Xena Design + Marketing Firm, and life is phenomenal right now. If you're in a similar position as I was previously in corporate America, my advice is: dream big, determine your unique selling point, find a supportive dream team, and get out.
I don't fault them; they're women who achieved much and then, it appears, made the best decision for themselves. Women face bias when they're leaders. McKinsey & Company recently said it found that "compared with men, senior women leaders report higher rates of burnout, chronic stress, and exhaustion." A report last year from LeanIn.org and McKinsey said women leaders were leaving their companies at the highest rate ever; the organizations started tracking the data in 2015. "You're not promoting enough women into the leadership ranks, and now you have more women leaving leadership roles," Thomas told CNBC Make It in October.

Microaggressions are indirect or subtle expressions of racism, sexism, ageism, or ableism. A number of Black workers report facing less discrimination and fewer microaggressions working from home than when they're at the office. Some women of color say remote work has helped them in the same way, too. From telling a new female worker that she "looks like a student" to asking a Black colleague about her natural hair, microaggressions can make a workplace feel uncomfortable, unsafe, and toxic. Since microaggressions are subtle, it's often hard to know if you're committing one or if you're on the receiving end.
Sandra Quince is the CEO of Paradigm for Parity, which promotes gender parity in corporate America. In the latest Equity Talk, Quince talked about how leaders could support women of color. How do you feel about the movement for gender parity right now? There are reports that say we are around 136 years until gender parity. We want to achieve gender parity in corporate leadership in 15 years.
She's been documenting her unemployment on TikTok and motivating others in their job searches. I posted it and immediately, and the video started getting a lot of traction — tens of thousands of views. I think my videos also tackle the stigmas around being laid off and being unemployed. Since being unemployed and posting about wedding planning on TikTok, I've registered as an LLC and have multiple people asking me to be their planner. For anyone wanting to post about being laid off or unemployed, I would say go for it.
For years, but especially after the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, CEOs kept reassuring Americans that efforts around diversity, inclusion, and workplace culture weren't just window dressing. At least that's how things now seem, multiple people who work in corporate diversity told Insider. He said the layoffs hitting diversity departments would do "long-term damage" to corporate America and showed CEOs' "empty promise" to bring change to their companies. The layoffs sweeping Big Tech and unfolding in some other industries are hitting the departments designed to make American companies more diverse. This puts corporate America's progress in this effort at risk, people in DEI told Insider.
Here's a timeline of how the US adopted the five-day, 40-hour workweek. Indeed, the pandemic accelerated public discourse over whether the 40-hour workweek still makes sense for some employees. Here's a look back at the history of the 40-hour workweek and how we got to where we are today. 1906: The eight-hour workday was instituted at two major firms in the printing industry. September 25, 1926: Ford Motor Companies adopted a five-day, 40-hour workweek.
More people are posting on TikTok about being laid off or unemployed. Three TikTok users share advice such as not disclosing secrets from your former employer. With that share, Hernandez began documenting her unemployment. Vlogging about unemployment on TikTok has helped her network, get job leads, and both give and find support. For all the value they see in posting, Hernandez and Bhereur cautioned against doing so recklessly.
But remote work has benefited many people with disabilities, many Black workers, and others. But Dimon appears more bearish when it comes to another measure that's been shown to promote diversity: remote work. Citadel CEO Ken Griffin slammed remote work at a conference last year, saying innovation and creativity declines because of it. The shift to remote work has been especially helpful for people with physical difficulties and mobility limitations. "The Woman King" and "Till" got zero nominations for this year's Academy Awards. The snubs show Hollywood still undervalues Black creatives, especially Black women. The film led box-office charts when it debuted in September, and had some in Hollywood expecting the movie to nab spots for best picture, best director, or best actress. And this is the second year in a row in which no Black woman was nominated for the best actress trophy. For critics, the snubs of "The Woman King" and "Till" are proof that the Academy still doesn't give Black talent, particularly Black women, a fair chance to be recognized.
To help cope, some laid-off workers are posting videos about their experience on TikTok. Some of them described it as a way to regain a sense of control over their life and career. After about 15 minutes of crying, she said, she had an idea: She'd record her grief and post the video on TikTok. What's more, turning to social media isn't the only way to tap your network to try and land a new role. A chance to reboot a careerWithin days of posting her video, Bhereur said, she had several informal interviews and even job opportunities.

Unless managers encourage vacation, workers too often don't take the days they should. While the growth of unlimited PTO might seem like a big win for workers, research and commentary from workplace experts suggest unlimited vacation is often, well, limiting. Geoffrey James, a contributing editor for Inc. and author of several business books, called unlimited PTO "the scam of the century." "Unlimited vacation time is classic bait-and-switch," he wrote, explaining his experience with having the benefit. Some employers have learned about the shortcomings of unlimited vacation through experience and have walked back their policies.

Noncompetes prevent some workers in low-wage jobs from leaving for better opportunities. Annabelle Chih/Getty ImagesCritics point out that many workers subject to noncompete language aren't high-profile executives who've amassed trade secrets — they're average workers. In 2015, The Verge reported on Amazon's use of noncompete agreements for warehouse workers. "Noncompete agreements help artificially stifle competition in the labor market, allowing employers to keep wages low by limiting workers' employment options," Constant wrote.
