“There was magic all around,” Miller writes. “The politics of alien conspiracy soon dominated political discourse and bid fair to wipe out any other issue. The novel was inspired by witch hunts that took place in East Anglia, England, in the 1640s, where Meyer, who was born in Canada, now lives. From the outset, we see Martha torn between a belief in omens and more mainstream Christianity. “Two bad omens; but what was she to make of them?” Meyer writes.
