The U.S. women’s 4×400 relay team, the final track event at an epic Olympics, blazed to the gold medal with a time of 3:15.27. Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas and Alexis Holmes put together a dominant performance illustrative of American track and field’s dominance in the 33rd Olympiad. It doubled the gold medal count from the Tokyo Games when it took home 26 total medals. Thomas won her third gold medal of these games: one in the 200-meter hurdles, and two as the third leg in both relays. McLaughlin-Levrone secured her second gold medal, joining Thomas and Rai Benjamin as the Americans in track and field with multiple golds.

In a most epic final, certainly, among the deepest in Olympic history, Lyles won in a photo finish. His time of 9.784 seconds in the men’s 100-meter dash was his personal best and gave the United States its first gold in 20 years. Phase 1 of Lyles’ grand plan to win Olympic gold in the 100 and 200 is complete. He’s the best in the world at it and has been for this entire Olympic cycle. Lyles finished seventh in the 100-meter final at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials, failing to qualify for the Tokyo Games in the discipline.
