Editor’s Note: A version of this story published last year after President Carter entered hospice care. But there was another source of inspiration for Carter that’s been overlooked: his distinctive brand of White evangelical Christianity, which remains hidden from most Americans. Carter was a progressive White evangelical Christian. Progressive White evangelicalism was once what one historian called “the ascendent strain of evangelicalism in America.”Today White evangelical Christians are associated, rightly or wrongly, with a conservative set of theological and political stances. Madeline Drexler/APUnlike former President Bill Clinton, another progressive White evangelical, Carter refused to “triangulate,” or adjust his beliefs to win favor with evangelicals.

PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Rosalynn Carter will receive her final farewells Wednesday in the same tiny town where she was born and that served as a home base as she and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, climbed to the White House and spent four decades thereafter as global humanitarians. Coming from that town of about 600 — then and now — Rosalynn Carter became a global figure whose “effort changed lives,” her grandson said. Uniformed officers from local police and sheriff's departments silently lined a street in the tiny rural birthplace of former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn, his wife of 77 years. To them, she was more than a first lady. Rosalynn Carter was the wife with strong opinions and few reservations about sharing them, the mother who had to intervene when her eldest son’s catastrophic attempt at baking a cake led to a kitchen fire, the grandmother who kept a stash of blueberries in the freezer and the great-grandmother who would race toddlers with her walker. “She was happiest whenever there was a new baby,” Josh Carter, one of her grandsons, recalled on Wednesday from the pulpit of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, the small town in Georgia farm country from which she never strayed too far even as she was drawn out into the world. The simple red brick church, where Mrs. Carter had worshiped for decades, was filled for her funeral on Wednesday with the people who had known her as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, neighbor and friend. Her husband, Jimmy, who is 99 and has been in hospice care since February, was also there, sitting in a wheelchair near the front of the church.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter is seen outside her home after U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden met with former President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Carter in Plains, Georgia, U.S., April 29, 2021. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were the longest-married presidential couple, having wed in 1946 when he was 21 and she was 18. "The best thing I ever did was marry Rosalynn," Carter told the C-SPAN cable TV channel in 2015. During that time, Rosalynn Carter sought to support her husband by speaking in 112 cities in 34 states during a 44-day tour. In the White House, she became honorary chair of the President's Commission on Mental Health, key to passage of a 1980 act that helped fund local mental health centers.

Rosalynn Carter was a paragon of strength and resilience in a marriage that was in all ways a true partnership. Her death was announced by the Carter Center on Sunday, which said she had passed away with loved ones at her bedside. It was different however, when she visited her neighbor’s house and saw a photo of Jimmy Carter on the bedroom wall. Former President Jimmy Carter speaks to the congregation at Maranatha Baptist Church before teaching Sunday school in his hometown of Plains, Georgia on April 28, 2019. Former President Jimmy Carter, who at 98 years old is the longest-lived American president, has entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia, a statement from The Carter Center confirmed Saturday. Jason Carter, the couple's grandson who now chairs The Carter Center governing board, said Saturday in a tweet that he "saw both of my grandparents yesterday. That's a staggering drop from when The Carter Center began leading the global eradication effort in 1986, when the parasitic disease infected 3.5 million people. I would not deserve to be your president," Carter said often as he campaigned.
Former President Jimmy Carter said at a church service on Sunday that he is "absolutely and completely at ease with death." Carter, 95, was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, and said he figured he was "going to die very quickly." And I found that I was absolutely and completely at ease with death. Except I was going to miss my family, and miss the work at the Carter Center, and miss teaching your Sunday school service sometimes and so forth. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are pictured attending the funeral of former President George H.W.
