TOKYO (AP) — Data from a Japanese auto industry association show that China overtook Japan as the world’s largest vehicle exporter last year. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association reported Japan exported 4.42 million vehicles in 2023, up 16% from a year earlier, while domestic auto sales totaled nearly 4.78 million vehicles. According to figures released earlier by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China exported 4.91 million vehicles last year. Japan’s car exports totaled 4.2 million in 2022. Overall, auto sales in Japan have been mostly on the decline since 2000.

Oct 20 (Reuters) - New car sales in the European Union rose 9.2% in September, helped by a jump in sales of electric and hybrid vehicles, which together accounted for more than half of car sales last month, industry data showed on Friday. Together, fully-electric cars, plug-in hybrids and full hybrids accounted for just over 50% of sales, the data showed. As recently as 2015, diesel vehicles comprised more than 50% of new car sales in the EU. Diesel vehicles, which alone comprised more than 50% of new car sales as recently as 2015, accounted for just over 14% of sales in July. Vietnam's electric vehicle market appears poised for rapid expansion in the next decade, but there could be significant headwinds blunting that growth. According to BMI Research, a Fitch Solutions research unit, passenger EV sales in the country is expected to at least double this year. "In 2023, we expect passenger EV sales to expand by 114.8% year-on-year to reach around 18,000 units," said BMI's report published Thursday. Specifically, sales for battery electric vehicle (BEV) could surge by 104.4% compared to the previous year to nearly 17,000 units, the report said. The penetration rate for passenger EVs — defined as passenger EV sales as a percentage of the country's total passenger vehicle sales — is set to increase to 13.6% by 2030.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) said the "Clean Truck Partnership" with the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) includes new flexibility for manufacturers to meet emissions requirements while reaching state goals for reducing emissions. Newsom said "today truck manufacturers join our urgent efforts to slash air pollution, showing the rest of the country that we can both cut dangerous pollution and build the economy of the future." California said Thursday it agreed to modify elements of the 2024 NOx emission regulations for which manufacturers will provide offsets to maintain California emission targets.
