☆ Gilgo Beach Serial Killing Suspect Is Charged With 2 More Murders

Rex Heuermann, who was arrested last summer and has been accused of murdering four women in the Gilgo Beach serial killings on Long Island, was indicted Thursday on murder charges in the deaths of two more women. In the meantime, investigators turned to the six other victims — four women, a man and a toddler — whose remains, like those of the first four women, were found along Ocean Parkway by Gilgo Beach. On Thursday, Mr. Heuermann was charged with killing one of them: Jessica Taylor, whose partial remains were found near Gilgo Beach in 2011 and then linked to other partial remains found eight years earlier in a remote wooded area in Manorville, a 45-minute drive east. He was also charged with killing Sandra Costilla, a 28-year-old New York woman whose remains were found in 1993 in the Hamptons. Her long unsolved murder had not previously been associated with the Gilgo Beach investigation.

Here is a timeline of the Gilgo Beach killings, how the investigation unfolded and what ultimately led to Heuermann’s arrest. Two days later, investigators discovered the remains of three additional victims – Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman – strewn across a half-mile stretch on Gilgo Beach. Authorities later said they believed Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and not related to the Gilgo Beach slayings. The task force included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police and the FBI.

He was expected to be arraigned Friday after his arrest Thursday night in Manhattan, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison. "We anticipate an indictment later on this afternoon," said Harrison, whose agency and the Suffolk County district attorney are leading the investigation. According to NBC New York, Gilbert was not the only victim who was a sex worker. In May 2022, Suffolk County police released 911 audio related to Gilbert's disappearance. The development comes after a multi-agency task force made up of FBI, New York State Police and Suffolk County authorities was established in February 2022 to "reinvigorate" the investigation.

For decades, residents and seasonal visitors to the Hamptons and other towns on the East End of Long Island have braced for spending summer mornings and evenings in the “trade parade,” the congested procession of contractors, hospital staff and other workers who commute to the East End to work every day. Priced out of the area, many workers have long lived up-island in less expensive locales like Manorville and Mastic-Shirley, forced to commute for hours each day. Fewer and fewer workers are willing to endure wall-to-wall traffic for low-wage jobs, punctuating the longtime dilemma that the workers who keep the North and South Forks running cannot afford to live there. “I don’t throw the word crisis around very easily, but it’s at that point,” said Fred Thiele Jr., a state assemblyman whose district includes Southampton. The staffer moved in with her boyfriend, he said, “but for a lot of people in that situation, they didn’t have options."
