Most of the residents living in Hunters Point heeded the mandatory evacuations ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall but Fulford, 76, stayed behind with wife, Sueann, just as they did during Hurricane Helene last month. The storm obliterated vast parts of Florida, including the surrounding areas of Hunters Point like Anna Maria Island and Bradenton. Rebecca Blackwell/APMilton knocked out power for more than 2.5 million customers across the state, including in Manatee County, where Hunters Point homes are located. Julian Quinones/CNNWhen Gobuty started the design process for Hunters Point, it was imperative the homes be able to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. Instead, Milton drove the worst storm surge across a 65-mile stretch of coast between Siesta Key and Fort Myers Beach.

CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

Chick-fil-A didn't build a traffic lane it promised outside a new store in Bradenton, Florida. Now, residents and the mayor are worried about drive-thru traffic spilling into the city's streets. Chick-fil-A told Insider that it's "still waiting to receive all necessary permits" from Manatee County and the State of Florida. A history of Chick-fil-A drive-thru concernsAtlanta-based Chick-fil-A is among the most popular fast-food chains in the US, with non-mall locations averaging $8 million in sales annually. But that popularity has made drive-thru traffic a problem at numerous Chick-fil-A locations.
This year, a new law in Florida requires that all books in public schools be vetted for children. High school social studies teacher Don Falls said he covered up his books to comply with the law. The district recently began implementing a new Florida law requiring all books in a public school to be vetted by a trained media specialist. Many teachers, including Falls, chose to cover un-vetted books in their classrooms rather than remove them. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis openly said in his swearing-in inauguration that this is the state where woke goes to die.

TAMPA, Fla. — More than 2 million people in Florida were under orders to pack up and head east to safer ground Tuesday as Hurricane Ian barreled north from Cuba on a path toward Tampa. But Burks, who moved to Tampa in 2005 and has weathered several hurricanes since then, said he's not going far. Many Floridians in more rural areas like Polk County live in trailers that are especially vulnerable to high winds. “Just go straight across the state to Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach.”And "do not go north," because that's where Hurricane Ian is going, he said. Three bridges span Old Tampa Bay, two of which connect Tampa to St. Petersburg and the third of which links to northern Pinellas County.
Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency in Florida as the response kicks into high gear. "We know we are going to have some major impacts throughout the state of Florida," said DeSantis, a Republican. DeSantis' emergency declaration also allows Floridians to bypass typical time limits on prescriptions and stock up early. In a press conference Monday afternoon in Largo, Florida, state Attorney General Ashley Moody reminded businesses that Florida law prohibits them from price gouging supplies people will need. "Our entire county is going to feel some type of impact," Cathie Perkins, director of Pinellas County Emergency Management, said at the Largo press conference.
