CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

CNN —Aid to several communities impacted by Hurricane Helene was temporarily paused in parts of North Carolina over the weekend due to reports of threats against Federal Emergency Management Agency responders, amid a backdrop of misinformation about responses to recent storms. Some FEMA teams helping disaster survivors apply for assistance in rural North Carolina are currently working at secure disaster recovery centers in counties where federal workers are receiving threats, a FEMA spokesperson told CNN on Monday. More than 100 people were killed in North Carolina and thousands of others were left grappling with catastrophic damage. There were more than 1,200 FEMA staff providing support in North Carolina as of Saturday, according to an update from the agency. FEMA officials have received threats before, but the difference is the magnitude of threats received in the wake of Helene’s devastation in North Carolina, the FEMA spokesperson told CNN.

Less than a fifth of large companies in the United States include coverage for the popular but pricey weight loss drugs Wegovy and Zepbound in their health insurance plans, according to a survey published Wednesday in Health Affairs. “They’re trying to figure out what is the right balance between the advantages to employees, potential health benefits and the cost of these drugs. The survey found that about half of employers that cover the weight loss drugs have certain requirements associated with their coverage, which Rae said would limit access for some employees but save money. Among large firms that don’t currently cover GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, only about 3% said they’re “very likely” to do so in the next year. Despite the exorbitant cost, employers do have a positive view of the drugs.

The rate of weight loss with the experimental pill, called amycretin, appears to be more rapid than what’s seen for other drugs. “It’s roughly double the weight loss rate seen with current GLP-1 agonists and approaching procedural or surgical-level outcomes,” said Dr. Christopher McGowan, a gastroenterologist who runs a weight loss clinic in North Carolina. McGowan said that while the weight loss was significant, he still has concerns about how fast people lost weight. “While losing weight is seemingly the end goal, how that weight is lost matters,” he said. CNN —A single rabid coyote in Rhode Island is believed to have attacked two people in neighboring towns in the span of two days, state environmental officials said this week. The same animal likely attacked another person on Thursday in Scituate, about 11 miles away, officials said in a Monday news release. There has not been a human case of rabies in Rhode Island since 1940. Rabies is endemic in Rhode Island and the state has had terrestrial rabies since 1994.
