Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Maryland, has started collecting magazines with Harris on the cover, buttons, a T-shirt and other memorabilia. She broke down sobbing during Maya Harris’ convention speech when thinking of her own memories of the vice president’s mother. “’Hi, it’s Kamala Harris,’” Alsobrooks remembers hearing. Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama’s mother and a linchpin of the Obama family who moved into the White House and provided stability and care for the family’s two young daughters during a tumultuous time in Washington, died on Friday. Her death was announced in a statement by Ms. Obama, former President Barack Obama and other members of the family. The statement did not give a cause, or say where she died. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Ms. Robinson was known as a loving, tough-minded matriarch who was never fully comfortable with the trappings of the White House, but who helped care for the Obama girls, Sasha and Malia, while their parents were on the road. “Just show me how to work the washing machine and I’m good,” she would say, the Obamas said in their statement on Friday.

Inside the world of Wordle at the New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-03-14 | by ( Saira Mueller | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +13 min
After the New York Times acquired Wordle from its creator, software engineer Josh Wardle, in January 2022, its player base grew to tens of millions. The New York Times assigned a dedicated editor for Wordle, Tracy Bennett, in November 2022. “You’re even going to be able to play Wordles that predate the New York Times acquisition, which is really fun,” Knight told CNN. What Wordle has done for the New York TimesAside from the editorial strategy, Wordle fits perfectly into the Times’ business plans. For Donna Cona, who has played it since before the Times acquisition, Wordle has become her go-to thing each morning.

Malia Obama made her directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival with the short film 'The Heart.' In the 18-minute short film "The Heart," Malia is credited with writing and directing under the name 'Malia Ann,' conspicuously omitting her well-known surname. The Daily Beast called the short film "solid but mostly forgettable" in a section called "Nepo Baby of the Week." Glover, who mentored Malia Obama, told GQ last April that he'd said to her: "You're Obama's daughter. Malia Obama has, in fact, been working in the industry since graduating from Harvard.

If you’re a celebrity seeking to rebrand, the Sundance Film Festival can offer a useful assist. From Marvel superheroes seeking an indie turn to teenage movie stars hoping to segue into spicy adult roles, the snowy event is the perfect place to debut a new direction. This year’s big rebrand was so skillfully executed that many people I ran into here at Sundance didn’t even know it had happened at all. If they had, we might have gotten a mob scene at one of the typically sedate short-film showcases, where an 18-minute project called “The Heart” premiered from a fledgling filmmaker credited as Malia Ann, though she’s much better known as Malia Obama, the daughter of the former president. “You’re Obama’s daughter.

CNN —Malia Obama is following in the footsteps of her parents, but not in the way you might imagine. The former first daughter debuted her short film “The Heart” at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on Thursday, appearing on the festival red carpet to herald the project. “We hope that you enjoy the film and that it makes you feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are,” she later added. Filmmaking is surely a lauded pursuit in the Obama household. According to Sundance, “The Heart” is playing in the Short Film Program 1 at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Japanese baseball player Shohei Ohtani attends a press conference on his presentation after signing a 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Dec. 14, 2023. Roughly a month after Shohei Ohtani signed a $700 million contract with Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers, California's controller is calling for "immediate and decisive action" from Congress to limit deferred income for higher earners. The Japanese pitcher's record-breaking deal defers $680 million for 10 years and has raised questions about future state taxability — especially if Ohtani eventually leaves California. Deferring $68 million annually for 10 years could save Ohtani $98 million over the life of his contract, according to an estimate from the California Center for Jobs and the Economy. However, the estimate uses several assumptions, and the exact terms of Ohtani's contract are unknown.

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Joe Biden meets Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday, there will be no such thing as a small detail. Biden and Xi will meet while both attend next week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco, but even basic information has remained closely guarded. That recalls Biden's nearly three-hour meeting with Xi before the start of last year’s G-20 summit in Bali. The Chinese attach importance to the location, which this time may be more like Sunnylands than Anchorage, where top U.S. and Chinese officials held rather tense 2021 talks. Hillary Clinton's 1995 Beijing visit turned heads for a different reason when she declared that “human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights."

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Europe has nowhere to hide from U.S. plans to mandate clearing of U.S. Treasuries transactions that will need to be carefully introduced over time, a global derivatives industry body said on Tuesday. A clearing house is backed by a default fund, ensuring that a transaction is completed even if one side of a transaction goes bust. Regulators began mandating the use of clearing more widely in derivatives markets after the global financial crisis in 2008 to improve stability and transparency. "It's something that you need to look at carefully and at this stage I think we still have more questions than answers as to how the actual process of clearing Treasury cash and Treasury repo will play out," Litvack said. Much will hinge on the details in the final rules that determine who will be within scope, O'Malia said.

Today, these dynamic food trucks serve up gourmet delights and cater events, fueled by convenience and social media-driven connection. While the most apparent technology food-truck owners use is front-end POS systems, back-end technology is also essential. Food-truck owners face the challenge of frequent menu updates, often requiring them to recreate signage or hire someone for the task. This helps food-truck owners make informed decisions related to parking and operating hours, which significantly influences their sales performance. In fact, a 2022 study published by Elsevier found that location was a key challenge for food-truck owners, as it affected customer targeting, exposure, and financial sustainability.

Barack Obama is no stranger to bleak circumstances — maintaining a positive attitude despite them helps him stay in high spirits. Obama, 61, discussed the top tactic he uses to remain level-headed in an interview with comedian Hasan Minhaj published on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure that between World War I, World War II, the Great Depression … we can go through the list of moments that are significantly worse than this." "When you're thinking negatively, take a moment to assess how realistic your thoughts truly are," psychotherapist Amy Morin wrote on their website. "Reframing your overly negative thoughts into more realistic statements can help you maintain a healthy dose of optimism."

Obama says he "didn't fully appreciate" Michelle's mothering of daughters while he was president. Obama told CBS Mornings that being out of the White House has helped his marriage with Michelle. In an interview with CBS Mornings, Obama said that while he was engaged as a father, he "did not fully appreciate" how difficult it was for Michelle to mother their children, Malia and Sasha, during his presidency. Since departing the White House and seeing Malia and Sasha all grown up, Obama said Michelle is now "a little more forgiving of all my flaws." "Let me just say this, it sure helps to be out of the White House," he laughed.
She said for 10 of her 30 year marriage to former President Barack Obama they didn't get on. Michelle Obama said marriage is "hard," and requires work and compromise. "A lot of young people quit on marriage over things that are just a part of the commitment," she said. "I share these things because marriage is hard," Obama said. Michelle Obama met Barack in a law firm in Chicago where she was assigned to mentor him, and were married in 1992.

Credit default swaps (CDS) are derivatives that offer insurance against the risk of a bond issuer - such as a bank - not paying their creditors. European Union markets watchdog ESMA said on Thursday that it, together national regulators, had been "looking into the recent market movements, including in the CDS market". Clearing of individual bank or company CDS is also available at LCH’s CDSClear and ICE Clear Credit. Overall, the credit derivatives market is also far smaller than it was before the 2008 crisis. "The credit derivatives market continues to play a critical role, particularly during times of volatility," Malia said.
When Michelle Obama attended Harvard Law School, her grandmother used to call and ask her what she cooked that day. "Grandma, I'm in law school. LONDON, Jan 26 (Reuters) - An industry body set out a global framework on Thursday for trading derivatives linked to cryptoassets to avoid FTX-style collapses sowing confusion over ownership. The International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) published guidance for trading digital asset derivatives to clarify what happens when things go wrong in an underlying market, such as the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. While most of the recent problems have occurred in the spot cryptocurrency market, many of the legal uncertainties could affect digital asset derivatives too. It will now include the body's first standard documentation for trading digital asset derivatives, initially covering non-deliverable forwards and options on Bitcoin and Ether. It could be expanded in future to cover additional product types, including tokenized securities and other digital assets executed on distributed ledger technology (DLT), ISDA said.
