Thomas Gnoske, a collections manager at the museum, first spotted thousands of hairs trapped within the lions’ teeth when he examined their skulls in the 1990s. “Our analysis showed that the historic Tsavo lions preyed on giraffe, human, oryx, waterbuck, wildebeest, and zebra, and we also identified hairs that originated from lions. The Tsavo lions were maneless, like this adult male lion. The combined efforts opened a treasure trove of data about the lions’ prey as well as about the predators themselves. “It suggests that the Tsavo lions may have either traveled farther than previously believed, or that wildebeest were present in the Tsavo region during that time,” de Flamingh said.

Trees are sucking up just as much, if not more, methane than soil does — the only other known natural sink on Earth. "We've been undervaluing trees for their climate benefits," Vincent Gauci, a professor at the University of Birmingham and the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. Both natural and human-made methane emissions from wetlands, cows, landfills, and burning fossil fuels are on the rise. In a 2017 study, they found that trees in Amazon floodplains emitted more methane than they absorbed. Satellites detect lower methane emissions than what scientists have found on the ground, implying that such "bottom-up" studies either overestimated methane emissions or missed a sink.

These findings, published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, are alarming but also controversial. Other scientists say the study contains too many uncertainties and limitations to draw such firm conclusions and could end up confusing public understanding of climate change. Researchers say the results also suggest global temperature could overshoot 2 degrees of warming by the end of the decade. Changing that baseline would mean the world has already warmed at least 1.7 degrees (scientists say long-term global warming currently stands at between 1.2 to 1.3 degrees). Whatever the baseline for measuring global warming, what remains clear, experts say, is that the impacts will worsen with every fraction of a degree of warming.

Early Spotify investor Northzone has hired Tybourne Capital director Sanjoy Malhi as a partner. Early Spotify backer Northzone has hired a director from second-generation Tiger Cub fund Tybourne Capital to lead its growth investments. The London-based fund, founded in 1996, has appointed Sanjot Malhi as a partner focused on growth-stage deals across Europe. Malhi will help distribute a $1 billion multi-stage fund that Northzone closed in September. However, many of those companies were funded with growth capital without having strong business fundamentals in place leading to a lot of pain in the market.
