On Thursday, scientists and engineers in Southern California got an exclusive glimpse at a recent snapshot of Fornax, a constellation of stars in the Southern Hemisphere. At the end of last month, the spacecraft’s survey concluded, and it closed its telescopic eyes for the final time. “This was the little space telescope that could,” said Amy Mainzer, an astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles, and principal investigator for NEOWISE. “We were really lucky to get to do this work.”When the mission was launched in 2009, it was known simply as WISE. It spent the next year peering at faraway objects in the universe radiating infrared light, including supermassive black holes, brown dwarfs, dying stars and one of the most luminous galaxies in the cosmos.

CNN —The NASA Lucy mission is about to have its first encounter with a space rock. The spacecraft, launched in October 2021, will fly by the small asteroid Dinkinesh on Wednesday. Dinkinesh is about half a mile (1 kilometer) wide and is situated in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Each of the asteroids Lucy will fly by differ in size and color. These are some of the asteroids that the Lucy mission will fly by over the next 12 years.

NASA for years has prioritized detecting asteroids much bigger and more existentially threatening than 2023 BU, the small space rock that streaked by 2,200 miles from the Earth's surface, closer than some satellites. If bound for Earth, it would have been pulverized in the atmosphere, with only small fragments possibly reaching land. But 2023 BU sits on the smaller end of a size group, asteroids 5-to-50 meters in diameter, that also includes those as big as an Olympic swimming pool. But with current capabilities, astronomers can't see when such a rock targets Earth until days prior. The successful demonstration, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), affirmed for the first time a method of planetary defense.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is aiming for an asteroid called Dimorphos, which is orbiting a giant asteroid called Didymos. To date, scientists have only identified 40% of city-killer asteroids orbiting near Earth, NASA estimates. Mainzer has been working on a space telescope called Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor, which is designed to fulfill that goal. Viorel BOSTAN, a prezentat rezultatele obținute de către cercetătorii UTM în cadrul proiectelor de cercetare. Într-o amplă comunicare pe tema: „Simulări pe modele matematice în ingineria produselor de mecanică fină: minitransmisii precesionale, sisteme de conversie, satelitul universitar TUMnanoSAT”, rectorul UTM Viorel BOSTAN a venit cu detalii importante la fiecare din compartimentele abordate. Referindu-se la elaborarea satelitului universitar TUMnanoSAT, d-sa a venit cu lux de amănunte privind crearea laboratoarelor de cercetare, experimentare: elaborarea și fabricarea satelitului propriu-zis; crearea infrastructurii terestre de control și monitorizare a zborului pe orbită a satelitului. Raportul de analiză structurală a TUMnanoSAT a fost realizat conform cerințelor JAXA JX-ESPC-101132-D (JEM Payload Accommodation Hanbook-Vol.8 Small Satellite Deployment Interface Control Document) și JMX-2011303E (Structure Verification and Fracture Control Plan for JAXA Selected Small Satellite Released from J-SSOD) și a inclus analize privind frecvența proprie, sarcina statică, elemente de fixare, identificarea componentelor critice etc.
