U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) and U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). "As more results come in it is clear that, as we have predicted all along, Republicans are poised to have unified government in the White House, Senate and House," Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday in a statement. "The party that will hold the majority in the House of Representatives in January 2025 has yet to be determined. Democrats poured huge sums of money into House races, trying to flip the lower chamber. They far outspent their Republican rivals in many of the most competitive House races across the country.

WASHINGTON — Among the many permutations for how the elections could end, one prospect has sparked chatter in both parties: Donald Trump could win the presidency while Democrats seize control of the House. Such a split would be rare — not since 1989 has a president entered office without his party controlling the House — and give Democrats substantial power over Trump's legislative agenda. In addition, persisting signs of ticket-splitting indicate Trump voters won’t all pull the lever for his party’s candidates down the ballot. The operative added that if Trump overperforms in rural areas, it could spell danger for a few Democratic-held House seats, such as Alaska's at-large district and Maine's 2nd District. “It’s why the American people will send President Trump a Republican House to secure the border, bring down inflation, and support law enforcement.”Asked about the prospect of a Trump presidency and a Democratic-controlled House, the Democrats' House campaign arm sounded an optimistic note that its party will win both.

But the unspeakable violence inflicted on this community has spurred a very public purpose for the family: bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries among military members and a call to action for continued research. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education. "Here, I brought the very helmet meant to safeguard my brother's brain," she said, showing the commission the military headgear.

Sure, many small businesses aren't glamorous — think dental practices or accounting firms — and they involve long hours and unpredictable market forces. The US Small Business Administration said in July that there were nearly 35 million small businesses in the US. Fewer than two-thirds of small businesses in the US in 2022 were profitable, and over a million businesses of all sizes close each year. Traditionally, small businesses were family businesses, and the eldest male child was expected to take it over when the patriarch was ready to step down. Buying up small businesses allows people without wealthy boomer parents to cash in on the trillions of dollars of wealth the generation is sitting on.

A Democratic group is launching a legal fund to help secretaries of state in key states defend against an anticipated post-election deluge of lawsuits. The group began aggressively raising money and campaigning to elect Democratic secretaries of state, who oversee elections in many states, in the wake of former President Donald Trump's false claims of voter fraud in 2020. It first funneled money to deal with postelection litigation to then-Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in 2022 to deal with postelection litigation. “We have a bunch of pro-democracy secretaries of state that we want to support. Three former chairs of the Maine Republican Party "enthusiastically endorsed" Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for president over GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump in an opinion piece published by Bangor Daily News on Monday. "We see these same positive characteristics are on full display in Vice President Harris and her candidacy. A spokesperson for the Trump campaign did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the op-ed. Additionally, the former chairs took a jab at the broader Republican party in their letter, claiming that much of the leadership of the party "has joined the cult of Trump." Janet Mills launched the commission a month after the Oct. 25 shooting killed 18 people at a bowling alley and a bar. Wathen said the commission's investigatory process was slowed by Army bureaucracy in obtaining information but that the military remained cooperative. But the sergeant said law enforcement was stymied at the time because Card refused to answer his door. There were also communication gaps between the Army and the civilian hospital, the report found, which can be improved in future cases. The military in its report denied that any brain-related injury was linked to his military service.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A panel investigating the deadliest shooting in Maine's history is set to hear from commanders with state police, which led the multi-agency law enforcement response after 18 people were gunned down at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston. Tens of thousands of people were ordered to shelter in their homes as police converged on the sites of the shootings and searched for an Army reservist armed with an assault rifle. Both police and the Army were warned that Card was suffering from deteriorating mental heath in the months before the shooting. Card didn't come to the door and the deputy said he didn't have legal authority under Maine's yellow card law to knock in the door. The deputy told the commission that an Army official suggested letting the situation “simmer” rather than forcing a confrontation.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The state of Maine's long-cherished reputation for political independence is being threatened by the nation's polarized politics, with more and more of its voters feeling pressured to take sides. So-called independents, or unenrolled voters, have gone from the state's largest voting bloc to trailing both major parties in just four years. Republicans, too, overtook unenrolled voters two years later. As of last month, a tally of active voters indicated there were 343,488 Democratic voters, 279,936 Republican voters and 273,298 unenrolled voters. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — With the death last spring of Portland's beloved Valentine's Day bandit, some wondered if the mysterious appearance of red hearts around Maine's largest city would continue. Hundreds of red hearts appeared on storefronts, mailboxes and even trash bins on Wednesday, with giant banners defying gusty winds at DiMillo’s floating restaurant and on construction scaffolding in the Old Port. “Long live the Valentine’s Day Bandit,” said Cary Tyson, executive director of Portland Downtown. Donald Trump filed a final brief to the Supreme Court ahead of arguments in his Colorado ballot case. Attorneys for Trump this week made a last push to convince the top court to keep him on the ballot. The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in the case beginning on Thursday after agreeing to take up Trump's appeal. Advertisement"There was no 'insurrection,' President Trump did not 'incite' anything, and President Trump did not 'engage in' anything that constitutes 'insurrection,'" lawyers for the former president argued Monday. The Colorado Supreme Court, however, overturned that judge's ruling and proceeded to ban him from the ballot.

In a unanimous decision, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court dismissed Bellows' appeal of the order requiring her to await the U.S. Supreme Court decision before withdrawing, modifying or upholding her decision to keep Trump off the primary ballot on Super Tuesday. This uncertainty is, however, precisely what guides our decision not to undertake immediate appellate review in this particular case,” the court said. In Colorado, the state supreme court reached the same conclusion. The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments on the Colorado case on Feb. 8, and Maine has already begun mailing overseas ballots. She put her decision on Trump's ballot eligibility on hold pending judicial proceedings, and vowed that she would abide by a court's ultimate ruling.

MEREDITH, N.H. (AP) — A record high tide in Maine washed away three historic fishing shacks that had stood since the 1800s and formed the backdrop of countless photographs. “It's truly a sad day for the community and the residents of South Portland,” Erskine said in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday. A record 14.57-foot (4.4-meter) high tide was measured in Portland, Maine, just after noon on Saturday, after a storm surge amplified what was already the month's highest tide, said National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Cempa. Cempa said the tide gauge measures the difference between the high tide and the average low tide. “Very sadly, all three fishing shacks at Willard Beach have been completely destroyed,” the city wrote on its Facebook page.
