The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept its key interest rate unchanged on Wednesday, as widely expected, but tweaked its policy stance to "neutral," opening the door for rate cuts amid early signs of a growth slowdown in the economy. The Monetary Policy Committee, which consists of three RBI and three external members, kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.50% for a tenth straight policy meeting. The committee, however, changed its policy stance to "neutral" from "withdrawal of accommodation." The MPC last changed rates in February 2023, when the policy rate was raised to 6.50%. India's overall growth slowed to 6.7% in the June quarter.

Commuters outside the Bank of England (BOE) in the City of London, UK, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The central bank's Monetary Policy Committee's interest rate decision is scheduled for release on Sept. 19. Either way, this would be Fed's first rate cut in the current cycle. Meanwhile, money market pricing for a BOE cut at Thursday's September meeting dipped from 35% late Tuesday to 26% Wednesday morning, still slightly higher than it was last week. The move came after U.K. inflation came in at 2.2% for August, steady on July and in-line with expectations — thus backing the need for a little more caution in Threadneedle Street.

Speaking to CNBC in an exclusive interview, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das discussed the issue of slowing growth in bank deposits underperforming an expansion in loans. "So there is a gap of 350 to 400 basis points," he said, referencing the difference between credit and deposit growth. Annual figures from August put loan growth at 13.6% with deposit growth at 10.8%, according to Reuters. When lending outpaces deposits, net interest margins — or the difference between what a bank earns on loans and pays out for deposits — take a hit. India's GDP slowed to 6.7% in the second quarter compared to last year's 8.2%, piling pressure on the central bank to reverse a recent hiking cycle.

Kenya central bank cuts main lending rate by 25 basis points
  + stars: | 2024-08-06 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: 1 min
Kenya's central bank cut its benchmark lending rate by 25 basis points to 12.75% on Tuesday, saying there was scope for a gradual easing of its policy stance while ensuring continued exchange rate stability. "The MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) noted that its previous measures have lowered overall inflation to below the mid-point of the target range, stabilized the exchange rate, and anchored inflationary expectations," the central bank said in a statement. "The MPC will closely monitor the impact of the policy measures as well as developments in the global and domestic economy and stands ready to take further action as necessary in line with its mandate," it added. The rate cut comes after two monetary policy meetings at which the Central Bank Rate was left unchanged.

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. The U.K. stock market is likely to rise over the course of 12 months, if the Bank of England cuts interest rates on Thursday and history repeats itself, according to a CNBC Pro analysis. Economists say the forecasts for whether the U.K. central bank will either reduce or hold rates are a close call. A decision to lower interest rates — which sit at at 5.25% currently — would mark the first time monetary police has been eased in Britain since the hiking cycle began in December 2021. The analysis found that, on three occasions the index had risen more than 20% on average within a year after an interest rate cut. For instance, the domestically focused index of 250 stocks rose by 17% across three months after the Bank of England cut rates in 1998.

Market pricing on Wednesday morning suggested a 60% probability of a rate cut at the BOE's Aug. 1 meeting. That is far less conviction than traders had before the European Central Bank enacted its own rate cut at the start of June; while pricing for the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut for the first time in this cycle in September has hit 100%. watch nowIn both May and June, seven MPC members voted to hold, as two voted to cut by 25 basis points. Headline U.K. inflation spiked higher than in the U.S. and euro zone over the last two years, but has also cooled more quickly. "I would rather hold rates until there is more certainty that underlying inflationary pressures have subsided sustainably," Haskel said.

Yen jumps on suspected intervention, sterling hits one-year high
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The yen rose sharply on Wednesday in what traders suspected was likely the result of yet another intervention from Japanese authorities to prop up the battered currency from multidecade lows. The euro was last down 0.8% at 171.15 yen, while sterling fell 0.76% to 203.75 yen. Combined with the estimated amount spent a day earlier, Japan is suspected to have bought nearly 6 trillion yen via intervention last week. That sent traders paring back bets of a rate cut from the Bank of England in August, providing a small boost to sterling , which was last up 0.43% to $1.3029. But the more important data is the inflation data, and that's telling the market that the Fed is in a position to cut fairly soon."

Rather than sparking typical cheer on Wall Street, Elliott's campaign, spelled out in a 50-page presentation, led to confusion and concern among investors and customers. Several activism experts pointed to two of Elliott's past targets for insight into the hedge fund's strategy for Southwest: Suncor Energy in 2022 and Marathon Petroleum in 2019. Elliott partner John Pike, who is now leading the Southwest campaign, was involved in the firm's actions at both energy companies. New York CNN —A federal judge overseeing a $30 billion preliminary swipe-fees settlement between Mastercard, Visa and retailers formally rejected the deal Tuesday. Mastercard and Visa, two of the world’s largest credit card networks, reached their proposed multi-billion antitrust settlement with US merchants in March. But a memo released by the court on Tuesday said that she was “not likely to grant final approval” to the preliminary settlement absent any changes. The proposed settlement would have lowered those fees by at least 0.04% percentage points for a minimum of three years. What the preliminary settlement entailedThe proposed settlement, which hinged on final approval from the Eastern District of New York, resulted from a longstanding antitrust class-action lawsuit in 2005.

Taylor Swift performs on stage during during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Anfield on June 13, 2024 in Liverpool, England. LONDON — Taylor Swift's record-shattering Eras Tour is continuing to supercharge consumer spending as it enters it U.K. leg, suggesting that the Bank of England may not be out of the woods yet in its fight against inflation. The Bank of England is expected to soon begin lowering its Bank Rate from a 16-year high of 5.25%, with all but two of 65 economists polled by Reuters anticipating a cut in August, while financial markets are pricing in September. However, a possible clash between one of Swift's August tour dates and a key inflation index day could skew the data enough to make the bank rethink its path, the analysts said. "A surge in hotel prices then could be material, temporarily adding as much as 30bps to services inflation (+15bps on headline)," Krishnan and Rossiter wrote.

One of the best performing stocks in the underperforming energy sector looks ready for another potential up leg, according to the charts. The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) has underperformed the S & P 500 thus far in 2024, but with a year-to-date gain of about 8.5%, it's actually the fifth best sector out of 11. From the closing low in May 2023 to its recent closing high on April 5, it gained a whopping 109%. However, when the stock finally emerged from that condition a year ago, demand resurfaced, and the strong advance commenced. Lastly, even after MPC's recent 20% decline, the stock has drastically outperformed both the XLE Energy ETF and the S & P 500 since the COVID lows.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey attends the central bank's Monetary Policy Report press conference at the Bank of England, in London, on May 9, 2024. Markets on Friday were pricing in an around 48% chance of a rate cut in June according to LSEG data, slightly higher than Thursday's 45% probability. "The broader message and the tone of the MPC were more dovish than we had anticipated," they said in a note published following the BOE's latest interest rate decision. The central bank on Thursday said it would leave interest rates unchanged for now, and stressed that a June rate cut was in no way guaranteed. Two members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted to cut rates, one more than at the central bank's previous meeting.

LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday announced a widely-expected hold on interest rates following its May meeting, as it said restrictive monetary policy was working to bring down inflation. Members of the central bank's Monetary Policy Committee voted 7-2 to hold, with the latter favoring a cut. In the prior meeting only one member voted for a cut. Energy stocks have finally caught fire in an increasingly uncomfortable backdrop for investors. Another compelling selling point for energy stocks is that there will be strong long-term demand for oil, Kostin wrote. "Our commodities strategists expect long-term energy demand will remain solid, in part because of increased global energy demand from the structural rise in transportation needs in EMs and AI." All three stocks will enjoy resilient long-term energy demand, Kostin wrote. Each firm has pulled back lately alongside the slight dip in oil prices and would benefit if the rally resumes.

LONDON — The Bank of England on Friday announced a "once in a generation" overhaul of its inflation forecasting following a long-awaited review by former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke. The review — initiated following criticism of the central bank's recent policymaking — sets out 12 recommendations which BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said the bank was committed to implementing. They include the scrapping of the Bank's long-held "fan chart" forecasting system and the introduction of a revamped forecast framework. It added that the BoE currently relies more heavily than other central banks on a central forecast, which may not fully account for wider risks or how inflation expectations can become "de-anchored." Additionally, the review said the bank needed to improve its communication with the public, suggesting the it put less emphasis on the central forecast, simplify its policy statement, and reduce repetitiveness."

The first deals with how the Bank of England communicates uncertainty around its central forecasts. The "fan chart" is the Bank's long-held method of presenting the probability distribution that forms the basis of its inflation forecasts.

The move higher for energy stocks comes as West Texas Intermediate crude oil approaches the mid-2022 highs of $88.31 per barrel. Theoretically, one can make bullish bets on oil using an ETF, such as the United States Oil Fund (USO) . The Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday hiked its key interest rate by 200 basis points, as Africa's largest economy looks to recover from a historic currency crisis and soaring inflation. The CBN announced that its main monetary policy rate would rise to 24.75% from 22.75%, in its second consecutive hike after February's 400 basis point increase. Governor Olayemi Cardoso told a press conference that policymakers believed they need to continue tightening in order to tame runaway inflation, according to Reuters. "That may be a sign that some MPC members are concerned about the impact on growth from tighter monetary policy," he suggested in a note on Tuesday. Capital Economics expects further tightening, given Governor Cardoso's need to bring down the curtain on the country's inflation and currency crises.

It was poised for a weekly gain of nearly 1.3%, its best week in over a month. That highlighted a growing view within the board that conditions were falling in place to soon pull short-term interest rates out of negative territory, which would be Japan's first interest rate hike since 2007.
