The Coast Guard and a group of good Samaritans were searching for five people who went missing after a fishing boat reportedly capsized near Couverden Point, Alaska, the military branch announced Sunday. The crew aboard the roughly 50-foot fishing boat Wind Walker sent a mayday call that the vessel was overturning around 12:10 a.m. Sunday. At the same time, a ferry vessel called AMHS Hubbard overheard the broadcast and volunteered to help, the Coast Guard said in the release. The Coast Guard said people familiar with the crew of the Wind Walker reported there were five people aboard. The fishing boat originated just south of Point Couverden in Icy Strait off the southeastern coast of Alaska.

CNN —Five people have been reported missing from a fishing boat that capsized in rough waters off the coast of southeastern Alaska, officials said. The US Coast Guard received a mayday call at 12:10 a.m. Sunday from the crew aboard the 50-foot-long vessel, saying it was overturning, the guard said in a news release. The Coast Guard asked for additional information but received no response, the release said. The ferry vessel AMHS Hubbard overheard an urgent broadcast from the Coast Guard and arrived on the scene first, officials said. Temperatures will warm above freezing on Monday so the heavy snowfall will transition to a rain and snow mix before becoming all rainfall by Tuesday.

A humpback whale that an expert said was looking for food breached the water and landed on a recreational boat near Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday, capsizing the vessel and ejecting two passengers, the United States Coast Guard said. The Northern New England sector of the Coast Guard received a mayday call for a 23-foot boat that had capsized when a whale shot up from underneath the boat and flopped onto it, about half a mile east of Odiorne Point State Park. The dramatic flip was caught on video by Colin Yager, 16, who was out fishing on another boat nearby, according to WHDH in Boston. The whale also appeared to be uninjured, the Coast Guard said. “It’s was a harrowing experience,” Gregg Paquette, one of the two passengers knocked over by the whale, told WHDH.

TikTok has briefly suspended the account of Hey Jane, a prominent telemedicine abortion service, four times without explanation. The groups and women’s health advocates say these examples, all from recent months, show why they are increasingly confused and frustrated by how major technology platforms moderate posts about abortion services. They say the companies’ policies on abortion-related content, including advertisements, have long been opaque. And when the platforms do restrict the accounts, the companies can be difficult to contact to learn why. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, an organization dedicated to abolishing abortion, said big technology companies had routinely limited its and other groups’ pro-life speech, suspending accounts and blocking ads with little explanation.

In cramped crew quarters in the forepeak, the deckhand, Brian Murphy, was warm but not breathing in a black tee and jeans. A marine welder and father of four, Murphy, 40, had been mostly unemployed for months, spending time caring for his children while his wife worked nights. A few days earlier, while he was on a brief welding gig to repair the Jersey Pride at its dock, the captain groused about being short-handed. Now it was July 20, 2021, the third day of the first commercial fishing trip of his life. Another somber sequence in the opioid epidemic was nearing its end.

The remarks and retweets by Taiwanese artists of the CCTV unification post came against the backdrop of China’s largest show of force around the island in more than a year. “This is not the first time, and probably not the last, that Taiwanese artists are forced to make a political stand in China,” said the leader.

Investigators recounted the crew’s desperate efforts to restore electrical power and halt the ship’s drift toward the bridge. They described how one of eight maintenance workers still on the bridge that night managed to sprint to safety moments before the bridge collapsed. The 985-foot-long vessel departed the Port of Baltimore around 1 a.m. on March 26 and traveled along a heavily used shipping channel that would take it under the Francis Scott Key Bridge. But as it approached the bridge, the power went out on the vessel and alarms blared. Transportation officials have been re-examining structural protection systems on bridges, which in some cases are missing or flawed, that are supposed to deflect wayward ships away from bridge piers.

Read previewCity of Baltimore officials on Monday accused the owner and manager of the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge of allowing the vessel to set sail despite it being "clearly unseaworthy." "Reporting has indicated that, even before leaving port, alarms showing an inconsistent power supply on the Dali had sounded," the court petition reads. Authorities found that the 984-foot ship lost power as it navigated toward the bridge, causing it to lose propulsion. The crew on board broadcast a mayday call just before impact, allowing traffic police to seal access to the bridge. The highly specialized role — in which a pilot temporarily takes control of a ship from its regular captain — is coming under the spotlight this week. But in the end, maritime experts say, there was likely nothing the pilots could have done to stop the 95,000-ton ship from ploughing into the bridge. “A ship's captain is a general practitioner, if I was to use a medical term,” Post said. He or she would be assigned to one ship leaving a port, Post said, and then disembark to board a second, inbound ship. “They had very little time from the start of the incident until the time they were upon the bridge," Post said.

“There’s no strong infrastructure for safety in maritime," said Jim Hall, who led the National Transportation Safety Board from 1994 to 2001. The Dali was flagged in Singapore, which has one of the best safety records of any country where ships are based. It's not listed as one of the 42 countries identified as “flags of convenience” by the International Transport Workers Federation. He said that with maritime shipping being the oldest transportation industry, with its international regulations that rely on many different countries for enforcement, it may have the most problems. “When I talk about those other transportation industries, the maritime industry is the worst offender of safety violations, of labor violations than any other industry,” Rexha said.

Read previewSafety officials are likely to investigate if contaminated fuel played a role in the Baltimore bridge collapse, causing the ship to lose power before it crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to reports. Part of the investigation will examine whether "dirty fuel" contributed to the ship's initial loss of power, sources familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. John Catsimatidis, CEO of United Refining Company, told Fox News that it's not unusual for oil companies to sell ships contaminated fuel. While it's still too early to determine what led to the Baltimore Bridge collapse, industry experts say "dirty fuel" would be one of multiple possible factors in the incident.

Follow our live coverage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore. But after the cargo ship Dali lost power early Tuesday, there were precious few minutes to act. In those minutes, many people — from the ship’s crew, who sent out a mayday signal, to the transportation authority police officers, who stopped traffic heading onto the Francis Scott Key Bridge — did what they could to avert catastrophe, most likely saving many lives. And the Key Bridge was particularly vulnerable. As long ago as 1980, engineers had warned that the bridge, because of its design, would never be able to survive a direct hit from a container ship.
