The House Ethics Committee released a long-awaited report on its investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. The investigation came to an end when Gaetz resigned from Congress in November after he was announced as President-elect Donald Trump's choice for U.S. attorney general. (The Ethics panel only has jurisdiction over sitting members of Congress.) Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration to lead the Justice Department on Nov. 21, as details emerged about the testimony of women who spoke to the Ethics committee. Read the full report below:

The House Ethics Committee Monday released its report summarizing the investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who vacated his seat days before the report was expected to initially be made public. A woman told the committee she saw Gaetz at a party having sex with a minor, her lawyer told NBC News last month. The same woman told the panel that, at the same party, she witnessed Gaetz having sex with her friend, who was 17 years old at the time. Prior to the report's release, Gaetz had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, noting that a separate Justice Department probe into allegations of sex trafficking ended with no charges. Earlier Monday, in an attempt to prevent the report’s release, Gaetz sought a temporary restraining order against the House Ethics Committee and its Chair, Michael Guest, calling for an injunction that would prevent their release of the expected report detailing the investigation into him.

WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., sought a restraining order Monday against the House Ethics Committee in an effort to halt the panel's expected release of a final report summarizing its investigation into him. NBC News reported last week that the House Ethics Committee had voted to publicly release the panel’s report detailing its investigation into Gaetz. Concerns about the allegations against Gaetz caused him to withdraw his name from consideration to be President-elect-Donald Trump’s attorney general. While Gaetz has asserted that it's against the committee's practices to release ethics reports about former members, there is precedent for that scenario. Two months after former Rep. Bill Boner, D-Tenn., resigned in 1987, and on the day former Rep. Buz Lukens, R-Ohio, resigned from the House in 1990, the committee released its reports into the lawmakers.

Text messages made public Monday by the House Ethics Committee showed that women complained that former Rep. Matt Gaetz had not paid them adequately for their alleged encounters with him. During the years-long investigation, Gaetz has vehemently denied he ever paid anyone for sex. “So I’m not to be taken care of for last week?” the woman asked Gaetz in the screenshotted text. The committee report said Greenberg often sent women money on behalf of Gaetz for the alleged sexual encounters with the former congressman. In the text exchange released by the committee, the other person asked the woman what Greenberg had said in a response.

What lawmaker finds 'very disturbing' about how House Ethics Committee handled Gaetz reportRep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) speaks to CNN's Kate Bolduan about the House Ethics Committee finding evidence that former Rep. Matt Gaetz paid tens of thousands of dollars to women for sex or drugs on at least 20 occasions, including paying a 17-year-old girl for sex in 2017, according to a final draft of the panel’s report on the Florida Republican, obtained by CNN. Gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has pointed to the Justice Department declining to bring charges against him in 2023. In a statement Gaetz released on X last week after CNN reported that the committee had voted to release the report, Gaetz denied having sex with a minor or paying women for sex. “In my single days, I often sent funds to women I dated - even some I never dated but who asked. I dated several of these women for years,” Gaetz said.

In a statement Gaetz released on X last week after CNN reported that the committee had voted to release the report, Gaetz denied having sex with a minor or paying women for sex. “Nearly every young woman that the Committee interviewed confirmed that she was paid for sex by, or on behalf of, Representative Gaetz,” the panel wrote. “Victim A recalled receiving $400 in cash from Representative Gaetz that evening, which she understood to be payment for sex. The committee wrote that Gaetz did not appear to negotiate specific payment amounts for sex with the women he paid. At least two women saw Representative Gaetz using cocaine and ecstasy at different events,” the committee wrote.

The House Ethics Committee on Monday revealed it found "substantial evidence" that former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017, and that he "regularly" paid women for sex while he was in Congress. Gaetz also accepted gifts, including a 2018 trip to the Bahamas, "in excess of permissible amounts," the bipartisan committee concluded. "Representative Gaetz has acted in a manner that reflects discreditably upon the House," the report said. But the Ethics Committee, which had paused its own efforts while the DOJ's version played out, reauthorized its investigation in May 2023. News outlets reported at the time that Gaetz's departure came just two days before the Ethics panel was set to vote to release the report.

Representative Gaetz refused to answer questions about his relationships with the women involved. The woman asserted to Representative Gaetz that she was being “treated differently" than other women he was paying for sex. 53 Mr. Greenberg told the Committee that Representative Gaetz was aware that the women they had sex with and paid had met Mr. Greenberg through the “sugar dating” website. In 2017, using a pseudonymous account, Representative Gaetz made payments to women largely without a description of the purpose of the payment. I think maybe [Representative Gaetz] even didn't really understand at some points because maybe that's why he wasn't giving me what I wanted.

Americans will likely be greeted by the lowest Christmas Day gas prices since 2020 during the pandemic, according to GasBuddy, an app that crowd-sources pump prices. GasBuddy told CNN it expects gas prices will average $3.01 a gallon nationally on Christmas Day. That would represent a modest dip from $3.10 last year and the Christmas Day record of $3.26 in 2021. Travel slowed sharply in 2020 due to the pandemic, keeping gas prices very low. However, a surprise increase in gas prices in recent days, primarily in the Great Lakes region, prompted De Haan to revise his initial forecast higher.

The parents say their grown children are not only accomplished and financially successful, but generous and kind. But looking back now, so many of the parents told me there were several things they wished they had known while their children were growing up. 'Don't panic if they don't finish college'Most of the parents I spoke to believed that a college degree was essential for a successful career. Their parents told me they worried that all the time their children were spending on the playing field instead of the classroom was a waste of time.

Only 38 minutes after a Madison, Wisconsin, teacher called 911 to report Monday’s school shooting, the lies began to spread. The first one, in a post on X, said simply: “Taking bets on another trans shooter.” The post didn’t pick up much traction. Without the context, dozens of X accounts used the Townhall video to speculate that the shooter was transgender. His post received only about 47,000 views, compared to the millions of views the false claim got on the platform. One X account said “the trans thing is obvious” from comments on an X account that appeared to belong to her.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants consume only breast milk — no formula — until they are about 6 months old. But at that age, just 56% of US babies consume any breast milk, according the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But for some women or birthing parents, exclusive breastfeeding or chestfeeding is simply not possible because of inadequate supply. “It is personalized.” Studies suggest that breastfed babies have lower risks of illness and chronic health problems, and that breastfeeding parents have lower risks of maternal diabetes and hypertension. “We have a long way to go.”The Lactation Network is privately held and doesn’t have external investment, Neff said.

Gold prices edged higher on Wednesday as attention turned to the Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy decision, with the U.S. central bank anticipated to implement a third rate cut this year and provide insights into its plans for 2025. Spot gold nudged 0.1% higher to $2,648.43 per ounce by 0237 GMT. U.S. retail sales increased more than expected in November, adding to warmer inflation readings in recent months and suggesting that the central bank could pause rate reduction in January. On the policy front, the Bank of Japan, Bank of England, Riksbank and Norges Bank are expected to deliver their policy verdicts later this week. Chile's central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 5.00% on Tuesday, extending an easing cycle that began last year.
