The show is also one of three ambitious projects released this year reimagining beloved Latin American classics treasured by book lovers for their use of magical realism. In addition to “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” Netflix also recently adapted Juan Rulfo's Mexican novel "Pedro Páramo" into a film. Magical realism is having its TV momentGarcía Márquez, who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1982, was best known for novels and short stories that use magical realism to blur the lines between fantasy and reality. An important literary tool for many Latin American authors, magical realism allows these writers to both explain sociopolitical realities and the abstract feelings associated with them. "The power of magical realism is that we don’t see it as magical realism.

How Netflix Made Magic Look Real in ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ The series, which will be released this week, adapts the novel for the screen for the first time. The author always refused, insisting that his novel, in which the real and fantastical converge, could never be rendered onscreen. Built by Netflix from the ground up for the first-ever screen adaptation of the novel, the town has real birds nesting in its trees and dogs wandering its narrow streets. To recreate Macondo, Netflix also relied on museums, documents, researchers and historians. Because of the care brought to that effort, the details accumulate to make Macondo seem real, said Enríquez, the production designer.

That was the task facing the production team of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” (or “Cien Años de Soledad”), the long-awaited Netflix adaptation of a novel widely lauded as being among the 20th century’s greatest literary works. “In previous attempts to write ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’ I tried to tell the story without believing in it. “‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ occurs during a specific time in Colombian history,” said production designer Bárbara Enríquez in a translated video call with CNN. Before his death, García Márquez asked his sons, Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, to destroy the novel. The life of a work of art does not end when its creator dies. Artists too rarely leave clear instructions on what to do with their works, especially unfinished ones, which can lead to messy legal battles. The heirs inherit the responsibility to preserve and promote the artist’s legacy so that it can be appreciated for generations to come. The truth is that if García Márquez’s sons had done as their father asked, they would most likely have been met with criticism, too.

UNTIL AUGUST, by Gabriel García Márquez. Billed as a “rediscovered” novel, “Until August” is likely to be the last published book of fiction by the Colombian master and Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. Reading it may provoke unhealthy levels of frustration in those familiar with García Márquez’s most indelible creations. Readers’ inevitable disappointment with “Until August” may be directed partly at García Márquez’s two sons and literary executors, who permitted its publication even though their father had made his wishes clear. And to his sons he said: “Memory is at once my source material and my tool.

Hotels, barbershops, nightclubs and bike repair stores carry references to his work. In the sweltering Colombian mountain town of Aracataca, it is impossible to walk down a single street without seeing allusions to its most renowned former resident: the winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, Gabriel García Márquez. Yellow butterflies are seen all over town, a nod to one of his famous literary images. The house where he lived as a child has been turned into a museum filled with its original furniture, including the crib where he slept. The library, named Biblioteca Pública Municipal Remedios La Bella, after the character Remedios the Beauty from his novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” features a glass case of his books translated into various languages.

CNN —Gabriel García Márquez’s last novel, “Memories of My Melancholy Whores,” was published 20 years ago, but the late Colombian author’s legacy did not end there. On Wednesday, the day García Márquez would have turned 97, the now-finished novel, “Until August,” was published by the author’s sons Rodrigo and Gonzalo García. But, as the pair acknowledge in the book’s preamble, García Márquez didn’t want the work to be released. The Colombian author’s memory loss undermined his confidence in his work, his sons said. García Márquez’s sons have confirmed that there are no other unfinished novels in storage.

Toward the end of his life, when his memory was in pieces, Gabriel García Márquez struggled to finish a novel about the secret sex life of a married middle-age woman. “He told me directly that the novel had to be destroyed,” said Gonzalo García Barcha, the author’s younger son. When García Márquez died in 2014, multiple drafts, notes and chapter fragments of the novel were stashed away in his archives at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. The story remained there, spread over 769 pages, largely unread and forgotten — until García Márquez’s sons decided to defy their father’s wishes. Now, a decade after his death, his last novel, titled “Until August,” will be published this month, with a global release in nearly 30 countries.

Sept 23 (Reuters) - Gresini Racing have the opportunity to sign Marc Marquez next season and are waiting for a decision from the six-times MotoGP champion, Ducati sporting director Paolo Ciabatti said on Saturday. Marquez has struggled with Honda this season and the Spaniard has finished only three races, his best finish being seventh place at Misano earlier this month. The 30-year-old said earlier this month that he will come to a decision during the Indian and Japanese Grands Prix. "As far as Gresini goes, I think it obviously looks like they have this opportunity and they are waiting for Marquez’s decision," Ciabatti said in an interview with MotoGP at the Indian Grand Prix. "For sure one is to stay with Honda, the other two we can only guess... You should ask Marc Marquez and Gresini what's going on.
