As Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance campaigns across the country, his wife, Usha Vance, has been a near-constant presence by his side. Reporters huddled under the wing of JD Vance’s campaign plane often get a glimpse of a book's dust cover as Usha Vance climbs the towable stairs or stands on the tarmac. Though she’s a fixture on the campaign trail, Vance has not occupied a forward-facing public role like other political spouses. As JD Vance has noted on the campaign trail, she left her corporate law firm following the senator’s nomination for vice president in July. Usha Vance, an undergraduate student of history at Yale, went on to study early-modern history at the University of Cambridge.

New York CNN —Coca-Cola is discontinuing the production of its new Spiced flavor just six months after the soda hit shelves, marking the end of a disappointing attempt to attract younger drinkers. “As part of this strategy, we’re planning to phase out Coca-Cola Spiced to introduce an exciting new flavor in 2025,” a spokesperson said. The short lifespan of Spiced Coke is surprising, because the company promoted it as a permanent flavor. Coca-Cola introduced Spiced Coke in February with a splashy ad campaign. The beverage blended the traditional Coke flavor with raspberry notes.

Former President Donald J. Trump over the weekend escalated his vows to prosecute his political opponents, circulating posts on his social media website invoking “televised military tribunals” and calling for the jailing of President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Mike Pence, among other high-profile politicians. Mr. Trump, using his account on Truth Social on Sunday, promoted two posts from other users of the site that called for the jailing of his perceived political enemies. One post that he circulated on Sunday singled out Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming congresswoman who is a Republican critic of Mr. Trump’s, and called for her to be prosecuted by a type of military court reserved for enemy combatants and war criminals. “Elizabeth Lynne Cheney is guilty of treason,” the post said. “Retruth if you want televised military tribunals.”

What’s a nice Jewish viscountess to do when she has a title but no money, a party invitation but no clothes and a pair of scissors but no sewing skills? Invent the poodle skirt, of course. Ms. Charlot, a New York native who died at her home in Tepoztlán, Mexico, on Sunday at 101, had been a Hollywood singer before her marriage in the mid-1940s to a viscount, or British nobleman. The result, the embellished circle skirt, was ubiquitous throughout the 1950s, bought in droves by women and, in particular, adolescent girls. With its voluminous fabric that flared prettily when the wearer twirled, it was just the thing for a sock hop.

New York CNN —For the past few years, Coca-Cola has experimented with wacky limited-time offerings, but its latest flavor is its first permanent addition in a while. Coca-Cola Spiced is a new soda that blends the “iconic taste” of Coke with a “burst of refreshing notes from raspberry and spiced flavors,” the company announced Wednesday. Coke doesn’t often add new permanent flavors to its lineup: Spiced joins just a few other flavors it always sells, including its flagship flavor, cherry and vanilla. “It appears Coca-Cola is looking to splice that trend onto its flagship with hopes of getting young consumers to consider the entire franchise,” he told CNN. Coca-Cola Spiced goes on sale February 19 in both cans and bottles in various sizes at most national retailers.

Turning cubs into LionessesIn the last major tournament before Wiegman took over, England crashed out in heartbreaking circumstances. England crashed out of the 2019 Women's World Cup in the semifinals. While the England players’ abilities speak for themselves, Wiegman has helped to instill a formidable team mindset in the group through some “non-negotiable” philosophies. “I think in a team you always have to do your best,” she told CNN before the start of the Women’s World Cup. Before the World Cup, England had won 26 of the 32 games under Wiegman and had only lost once – a friendly against Australia in April.

In the first half of 2023, healthcare investors have written big checks for their top startup picks. 2023 is on track to be the lowest year of healthcare funding since 2019, Rock Health says. Digital-health startups in the US raised $6.1 billion in the first half of 2023, Rock Health's H1 2023 funding report published on Monday found. Right now, 2023 is on track to be the lowest healthcare funding year since 2019, according to Rock Health. Krasniansky said Rock Health expects many of the impending shutdowns to impact healthcare startups that sell products and services to patients online and on-demand, especially direct-to-consumer companies like telemedicine or mail-order-pharmacy startups.

This marks a shift from the incentive culture that many companies have been using to lure workers back to the office post-pandemic. But workforce demographics vary widely when it comes to the benefits, and the desire, to return to the office. Employees who work from the office at least three times a week report feeling more connected to their colleagues, a company spokesman said. This could mean, for instance, spelling out to the sales team that Mondays and Wednesdays are in-office days because that's when the bulk of customer interactions happen, and making clear to engineering that Thursdays are in-office days because that's when code reviews happen. This comes as the company will start mandating employees be in the office four days a week, up from three days, after Labor Day.

BARONE The book could not be staged as-is now, just as much of opera makes you cringe the closer you look. VINCENTELLI The “Phantom” legacy is most visible in business terms, with a generation of blockbusters that run for years, decades even. The current “Sweeney Todd” revival has luscious orchestrations but the staging and most of the performances are so timid. A couple of years ago I saw “Phantom” at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. “Phantom” is similar to Puccini not only in its music, but also in its specificity; you can’t really stretch Puccini, conceptually, and with “Phantom,” you have to either go big or go home.
All available tickets for the 90,000-capacity stadium were snapped up 15 minutes after going on sale, the U.K.'s fastest-ever sellout for the women's game. That trend has continued with the start of the 2022-23 season of the Women's Super League, the top tier of women's soccer in England. More money, more qualityWomen were banned from playing on Football Association grounds until 1971, and there wasn't a fully professional women's league until 2018. Major publishers like BBC Sport have also made moves to include the women's game more prominently in coverage. "Unbundling would attract more brands who see the women's game as their marketing focus and not just an add-on," Baroni said.
The bill took cues from Washington state, where lawmakers in 2019 became the first in the U.S. to legalize human composting and where a nascent industry is growing. Four Washington state funeral facilities are now licensed to perform natural organic reduction, according to Rob Goff, the executive director of the Washington State Funeral Directors Association. California’s law will give regulators with the state’s Cemetery and Funeral Bureau until 2027 to create regulations for a human composting program. The know-how behind human composting began in ranchers’ fields. Human composting could instead help soils sequester carbon and provide nutrients for plant life.
