MANZANAR, Calif. — Swinging at the first pitch on a hallowed baseball field was 23-year-old Logan Morita. Players from the Japanese American League, along with friends and family of former incarcerees, played in a tribute to the baseball teams formed at prison camps across the country during the era. “It says that they’re resilient,” he said, pointing out the baseball field, garden and school that Japanese Americans built behind barbed wire. As it was during WWII, baseball at Manzanar isn’t just about the score or a winning record. Back when barbed wire restricted freedom, Manzanar players found solace on a field that organizers and volunteers have now rebirthed and made their own.

“Just to both of us getting frustrated.”Therein lies the problem: Gentle parenting is proving to be too hard on many parents. One study published in July found that over 40% of self-identified gentle parents teeter toward burnout and self-doubt because of the pressure to meet parenting standards. A wave of think pieces called gentle parenting “too gentle” of a practice that required a parent to turn into a “self-renouncing, perpetually present humanoid.”The gentle parenting philosophy, said Pezalla, is largely a social media trend with no scholarship to back it up. Enter gentle parenting. In theory, gentle parenting has great values to apply to parenting practices — speak kindly and honor connections.

Family members amble through the front door with more gifts, so the kids form a gift-opening assembly line that starts from youngest to oldest. Oh, the gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts! I can’t control what others give my kids, but I can control our understanding of material objects and values. Often, on these boisterous multigenerational family holiday celebrations, the conversation inevitably turns toward nostalgia. “Remember when even buying bones was a special treat for our family?” my mom says with eyes twinkling.
