At the time, Hochul said congestion pricing at that rate would be a hardship on New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet in the post-pandemic economy. Now the race is on to get congestion pricing approved before President-elect Donald Trump, who opposes it, takes office in January. The revised congestion pricing plan is expected to go before the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board for approval next week. After the expected MTA approval, the state and city will then ink an agreement with transportation officials in the Biden administration, who have been supportive of congestion pricing. They also predicted that congestion pricing would generate $15 billion that could be used to modernize subways and buses.

Some Uber and Lyft drivers are striking deals with passengers for rides outside the apps. AdvertisementSome drivers for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are offering passengers an alternative: Ditch the apps entirely, agree on a price, and pay them in cash or through an app like Venmo. But some rideshare drivers' pay is considerably lower than that — as little as $9 an hour, BI previously reported. AdvertisementRideshare drivers told BI that they often make less than half of what riders pay for the trip. One Uber driver in Massachusetts shared screenshots of a recent Uber trip that cost the rider about $156 — and paid the driver roughly $74 after Uber deducted its share plus taxes.

Markets: The post-election rally on Wall Street continued into afternoon trading, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumping 3.4%, or roughly 1,450 points, and the S & P 500 advancing 2.4%. It's worth noting, the stock market was reacting like Jim Cramer said it would in his Sunday column . The one thing markets hate is uncertainty, and Wednesday's rally can be attributed, in part, to relief that Wall Street professionals and individual investors alike know where they stand and what to expect from the country's next president. Bond yields move inversely to prices, and a basis point is equal to 0.01%. "You have to be very careful to respect the bond market if you do any buying today," Jim said.

Venture firms are increasingly investing in competing LLM startups like OpenAI and xAI. Some VCs argue investing in multiple LLMs is strategic, while others see it as unethical. AdvertisementWhen venture firms pull out their checkbooks, there has traditionally been an unspoken rule: Do not back a competitor. Sound Ventures and Wisdom Ventures backed both OpenAI and Anthropic. There is also the matter of money, with only a handful of firms capable of writing the colossal checks required to fund LLM companies.

Here are some of the ways Bank of America analysts think the upcoming election results could affect the stock market. Harris presidency, split government A victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the White House, plus a Republican-controlled Congress, could be "the best outcome" for online media companies, according to Bank of America analyst Justin Post. He noted that Harris is likely to enforce a potential ban on TikTok — which could boost Meta Platforms and Snapchat . Trump president, split government A win for Republican candidate Donald Trump and a split government would be the best-case scenario for bank stocks, per analyst Ebrahim Poonawala. On the other hand, a Trump presidency would be viewed positively by gig-economy companies, including Uber and Lyft, according to analyst Post.

In cities where those companies operate, drivers are already at risk of losing earnings or seeing an impact on their income. I think drivers in Austin and Atlanta will be in a similar position next year as Waymo has plans to launch there, too. AdvertisementEven though I'm driving for Uber and Lyft full-time, it was never meant to be a full-time gig. One of the main reasons I'm an Uber and Lyft driver is to be debt-free. I think Uber wants to be the central hub for all transportation, even if that means it eventually replaces human drivers entirely.
