CNN —Senior-level personnel changes at the US Secret Service as well as the creation of new divisions are underway as the agency works to resolve security breakdowns that preceded the two attempts on former President Donald Trump’s life this summer. Typically, incoming presidents choose their own Secret Service director, and it’s hard to know whether Vice President Kamala Harris or Trump would retain Rowe. “I’m trying to get programs more closely aligned with the mission, getting them out to the field so that they are directly supporting enforcement operations, major criminal investigations and, of course, protective operations,” Rowe told CNN. Radio calls from local police who saw the shooter on the roof shortly before he opened fire never made it to the Secret Service. CNN —Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has asked the state’s Court of Appeals to reinstate six counts in the election subversion case against Donald Trump and his co-defendants, including three specifically against the former president. The court filing brings the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, and the effort to overturn Trump’s election defeat, back into the spotlight as early voting begins in Georgia in the 2024 election. The counts relate to Trump and his co-defendants’ alleged efforts to have state officials appoint a fake slate of electors for the state following his loss in the 2020 election. In his March decision, McAfee wrote that Willis failed to give the defendants “enough information” to prepare their defenses. “As written, these six counts contain all the essential elements of the crimes but fail to allege sufficient detail regarding the nature of their commission, i.e., the underlying felony solicited,” McAfee wrote at the time.

CNN —Special counsel Jack Smith told a federal judge on Wednesday that the Supreme Court’s decision limiting some obstruction charges against those who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, should not apply to Donald Trump in the election subversion case against the former president. One primary reason the obstruction charge against Trump should stand, prosecutors argue, is that – unlike in the case involving a rioter that was before the Supreme Court – Trump is directly accused of creating false evidence though the plot to insert fake electors in the certification process. Trump is arguing the ruling should result in Judge Tanya Chutkan throwing out the case against him. “The defendant’s supplement ignores entirely that the superseding indictment includes allegations that involve the creation of false evidence,” prosecutors wrote Wednesday, namely, “the fraudulent electoral certificates.”Smith also urged the judge to ignore Trump’s claims of presidential immunity, calling them “deeply flawed” and “irrelevant” to the issue at hand and should wait to be argued in separate filings. Washington CNN —The threat environment in the United States “remains high” ahead of the November presidential election and conflict in the Middle East, according to a new assessment by the Department of Homeland Security. The annual assessment released Wednesday warns of possible threats from violent extremists driven by the heated political environment in the US as well as foreign and domestic threats from terrorist groups and others inspired by conflicts abroad. Some of those intentions of Iran and other countries, according to officials and the report itself, are to sow confusion and chaos in the US 2024 presidential election. “We have seen threats against election workers, we’ve seen white powder letters sent to election workers to scare them,” the official said. “We have also recently observed a rise in disruptive tactics targeting election officials and offices—like those observed in past election cycles—including hoax bomb threats, swatting, doxxing, and mailing white powder letters, intended to instill fear and disrupt campaign and election operations,” the report says.

CNN —The man who allegedly claimed he had C4 explosives in his car and sped through a security checkpoint at Donald Trump’s rally in Michigan over the weekend pleaded not guilty to charges against him on Monday. Steven William Nauta has been charged with four state counts, including making a false threat of terrorism and being in possession of bomb-making materials. He has pleaded not guilty to each count, according to a court official. A bond of $1 million was set for Nauta during his arraignment Monday, according to a court official, and was placed under house arrest. The charges against Nauta note that the fertilizer he allegedly removed from his vehicle can be used to make explosives.

Ryan Wesley Routh faces five charges including the assassination attempt, gun charges and assaulting an officer. Routh was allegedly spotted by a Secret Service agent who was running surveillance ahead of Trump. Routh allegedly fled the area in a car and was arrested by local police less than an hour later on a nearby highway. One piece of information prosecutors have cited is a letter Routh allegedly left with a witness who came forward after Routh was arrested. “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” Routh allegedly wrote.

The attempted assassination charge is “pretty rare,” according to former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a CNN senior law enforcement analyst. CNN —When members of Congress meet on Capitol Hill to certify the electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election, the process, on the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, will have the full weight of the federal government behind its security. The certification process on January 6, 2025, was designated as a national special security event by the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in the last week following a request from Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser, according to the US Secret Service. The designation is reserved for significant events – including the Super Bowl, presidential inaugurations and this summer’s NATO summit – where security is required on a mass scale. The source told CNN that agencies are still in the early stages of determining the security measures that will be in place for the Electoral College certification. “National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance,” Eric Ranaghan, the special agent in charge of the USSS Dignitary Protective Division, said in a statement announcing the designation.
