The big storyA Copilot conundrumMicrosoft; Chelsea Jia Feng/BIMicrosoft's challenges with its flagship AI product could be another red flag for an industry with high hopes for the tech. Earlier this year, analysts at Barclays highlighted an under-the-radar risk to AI bets: the depreciation costs related to AI chips . A potential Trump trade plan beneficiary: US semiconductor jobs. If Trump's proposed trade plan is enacted, the American semiconductor industry could see hiring growth. Walmart might be just fine under Trump's proposed trade plan.

A person walks by a T-Mobile retail store on May 28, 2024 in San Francisco, California. T-Mobile 's network was among the systems hacked in a damaging Chinese cyber-espionage operation that gained entry into multiple U.S. and international telecommunications companies, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday citing people familiar with the matter. "At this time, T-Mobile systems and data have not been impacted in any significant way, and we have no evidence of impacts to customer information." It was unclear what information, if any, was taken about T-Mobile customers' calls and communications records, according to the WSJ report. Earlier in October, the Journal reported that Chinese hackers accessed the networks of U.S. broadband providers, including Verizon Communications , AT&T and Lumen Technologies , and obtained information from systems the federal government uses for court-authorized wiretapping.

Inside Microsoft's struggles with Copilot

In September 2023, Microsoft's famously soft-spoken CEO, Satya Nadella, unveiled the company's flagship AI product, Copilot, with sweeping fanfare. Some of Microsoft's own employees and executives are privately concerned that Copilot won't be able to deliver on its ambitions. Copilot's struggles have created an opening for Microsoft's rivals, some of whom have seized on the opportunity to promote their own agendas. "Now, when Joe Blow logs into an account and kicks off Copilot, they can see everything," said one Microsoft employee familiar with customer complaints. As complaints and questions over Copilot mount, so does the pressure to justify Microsoft's unprecedented level of spending on AI.

A broad Chinese hacking campaign against U.S. telecommunication networks targeted the phones of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, two sources familiar with the matter say. Another source told NBC News that people affiliated with the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris were also targeted. None of the three sources clarified whether campaign devices were successfully compromised or whether China stole their communications. It is unclear who in the Harris campaign was targeted or if others in the Trump campaign were targeted in addition to Trump and Vance. It's not clear that the hack was an attempt to influence the presidential election.

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — The director of the National Security Agency said Sunday that a Chinese hack of three major telecommunications firms is under investigation but that it remains “premature” to discuss the case. The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday night. The FBI and the White House National Security Council declined to comment. Haugh said the NSA and other federal agencies issued an advisory in 2022 warning that cyber operators sponsored by the Chinese government were trying to hack major telecommunications companies and network service providers. “I think what we see broadly from a PRC [People’s Republic of China] threat perspective is they’re going to be very aggressive at critical infrastructure collection operations and targeting our critical infrastructure,” Haugh said.

As of June, the botnet included over 260,000 hacked devices from all over the world, from North and South America to Australia, according to US officials. Those hacked devices ranged from webcams to DVRs to routers, and about half of them were located in the US, according to Wray. That Chinese hacking unit is preparing to “wreak havoc and cause real-world harm” to the US, Wray told Congress in January. Lumen researchers are watching for signs that the Chinese hackers will resurrect the botnet. A Chinese company named Integrity Technology Group managed the botnet for the last three years, according to US officials.

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. Kate Johnson is betting nearly $1 million that the investors fleeing her company are wrong. Johnson bought 1 million shares of Lumen Technologies stock last week as it dipped into penny-stock territory, costing the telecommunications company boss $970,000. The former Microsoft and General Electric executive said the purchase made sense as she felt investors overreacted to a complicated third-quarter report and restructuring plan.

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Telecommunications services firm Lumen Technologies (LUMN.N) beat Wall Street estimates for third-quarter revenue on Tuesday, helped by strong demand for its services as businesses digitize their operations. The Monroe, Louisiana-based company posted revenue of $3.64 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, beating analysts' average estimate of $3.61 billion, according to LSEG data, but fell 17% from a year earlier. The proposed sale of Lumen's EMEA business is expected to close on Wednesday, subject to meeting customary closing conditions, the company said. The company said its long-term debt at the end of the third-quarter was $19.74 billion. Lumen posted a net loss of $78 million for the quarter compared with a reported net income of $578 million a year earlier.

A new Microsoft AI tool could make up for the soft skills that some managers say Gen Z lacks . Microsoft 365 Copilot will us AI to help users write better emails, the company says. AdvertisementAdvertisementCompanies that use Microsoft Outlook for correspondence are getting an AI-powered tool that will help draft emails beginning next month. Some managers have complained about their supposedly lazy Gen Z workers, who they need to be supervised all day to ensure they're keeping up with their tasks. ResumeBuilder.com surveyed more than 1,300 US managers in April, and most of them said that Gen Z is the "most challenging generation" to work with.

New York CNN —Artificial intelligence could soon be writing more company emails in Microsoft Outlook, as the company expands its rollout of AI tools for corporate users. The Microsoft 365 Copilot tool – “your everyday AI companion,” as the company bills it – will help users write their emails to “keep your sentences concise and error-free.” The tool also summarizes long email threads to quickly draft suggested replies. Users with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions will get more advanced AI help through Microsoft Editor, an intelligent writing assistant. The initial wave of attention on the tool helped renew an arms race among tech companies to develop and deploy similar AI tools in their products. Microsoft rival Google, for example, has also brought AI to its productivity tools, including Gmail, Sheets and Docs.

Wildcat said it owned 3 million Consolidated Communications shares, equivalent to about a 2.6% stake. The offer was made on April 12 by a consortium led by private equity firm Searchlight Capital, which owns 34% of Consolidated Communications. Consolidated Communications formed a special committee to consider the offer later that month but has not provided an update since. TD Cowen analysts wrote in an April 13 note that they expected Consolidated Communications to accept the deal given its capital needs and operational challenges. But Wildcat argues that any deal should not be for less than $14 per share because the value of Consolidated Communications' investment in its business has yet to be realized.
