CNN —Lionel Messi rolled back the years with a vintage performance for Argentina on Tuesday, scoring three goals in his nation’s 6-0 thrashing of Bolivia in a 2026 World Cup qualifier. It was the 37-year-old’s 10th international hat-trick, a tally which draws him level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in men’s soccer. It was Messi who got the party started, capitalizing on a defensive error to put his country ahead after 19 minutes. The former Barcelona superstar then whipped the home crowd into a frenzy with two quick goals before the final whistle. Messi was making just his second appearance for his country since July after overcoming an ankle injury.

U.S. interest rate cuts are unlikely to move at an aggressive pace, say market watchers. The Fed kicked off its easing cycle with a jumbo 50 basis-point rate cut in September — but subsequent ones will be milder, they said. They highlighted the better-than-expected September jobs report, renewed worries around inflation, rising yields and an economy that's still relatively strong. How to position In that scenario — and with inflation expected to continue being sticky, it's important that investors still have exposure to commodities, said Landsberg. Duolingo's CEO said being in the office is key for brainstorming. In an interview on The Verge's "Decoder" podcast, Luis von Ahn said that employees must come into the office three days a week. "Most of what we do is creative stuff," von Ahn told "Decoder." ☆ SpaceX gets green light for fifth Starship test flight

CNN —Federal regulators granted SpaceX its long-awaited license to move forward with a fifth uncrewed test launch of Starship, the most powerful rocket system ever constructed. The FAA had been expected to hand down a license for this test launch weeks ago. SpaceX has also publicly denied reports that the company violated wastewater regulations with the deluge system, which SpaceX says uses potable water. Notably, the company launched a 2020 test flight of a prototype rocket, called Starship SN8, without obtaining prior approval from the FAA for a public safety waiver. At one point in 2023, for example, he said that he did not blame the FAA for holding up Starship launches.

A Michigan teenager charged in the stabbing death of a gay Detroit man will be tried as an adult, in part because of the “heinous nature of the crime,” authorities said Tuesday. Al-Alikhan targeted Brisendine because he was a gay, police alleged Tuesday in a statement on social media. Police in nearby Dearborn arrested Al-Alikhan and turned him over to Detroit authorities on Oct. 1, Detroit police said in a statement. Asked why he thought his brother was killed, Harvey Brisendine didn’t hesitate to say he thinks it was a hate crime. “We don’t want to take advantage of the gofundme generosity but primarily want people to know that Howard was a victim of a brutal murder hate crime for being gay.”

With 16 games still remaining before the start of the MLS Cup playoffs, the total has already surpassed the previous record of 10,900,804 set in 2023. At just over 17,000, the average crowd for Inter Miami games, home and away, was the second smallest in the league in 2022. BOSTON — Luis Tiant, the charismatic Cuban with a horseshoe mustache and mesmerizing windup who pitched the Red Sox to the brink of a World Series championship and himself to the doorstep of the Hall of Fame, has died. Major League Baseball announced his death in a post on X on Tuesday, and the Red Sox confirmed that he died at his home in Maine. He had 187 complete games and 47 shutouts in a 19-year career spent mostly with Cleveland and Boston. His death comes one week after that of all-time baseball hits leader Pete Rose, whose Cincinnati Reds faced Tiant’s Red Sox in the 1975 World Series — still considered one of the greatest in baseball history. After his retirement, Tiant was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame but never made the national shrine in Cooperstown, New York, receiving a high of 30.9% of the votes in 1988, his first year on the ballot.

Luis Tiant, a Cuban-born right-hander who was one of baseball’s most entertaining and charismatic pitchers, and whose personal story was among the game’s most poignant, died on Tuesday. His death was announced by the Boston Red Sox, for whom he pitched in the 1970s. The team did not say where he died or cite the cause. El Tiante, as he was known on the sports pages — or Loo-ee! as stadiums full of fans would often chant while he was on the mound — won 229 games over 19 big-league seasons, playing for teams in six cities, notably Cleveland and Boston, where he led the Red Sox to a World Series and became one of the most beloved players in the team’s storied history.

As the Portuguese paper and timber industries grew in the mid-1900s, so too did eucalyptus plantations, and the species now covers nearly 2 million acres. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic announced Wednesday that it would start massive deportations of Haitians living illegally in the country, expelling up to 10,000 of them a week. Government spokesman Homero Figueroa told reporters that the government took the decision after noticing an “excess” of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Last year, the Dominican Republic deported more than 174,000 people it says are Haitians, and in the first half of the year, it has expelled at least 67,000 more. Activists have long criticized the administration of President Luis Abinader for what they say are ongoing human rights violations of Haitians and those of Haitian descent born in the Dominican Republic. In the 20th minute, Donnarumma left his goal line to attempt to punch clear a cross from Leandro Trossard, but he was beaten to the ball by Havertz, who headed into the empty net. But Arsenal would double its lead in the 35th minute when Saka sent a curling free kick into the box.
