A gunman shot two police sergeants who were trying to arrest him minutes after an armed robbery in a mahjong parlor on the Lower East Side in Manhattan on Thursday, Police Department officials said. Both were in stable condition, said Chief Kenny, who was joined at the news conference by Mayor Eric Adams. The sergeant who was grazed will be released from the hospital on Thursday night, and the sergeant who was shot in the groin will be held overnight for observation. A man, Joshua Dorsett, 22, was taken into custody at the scene, Chief Kenny said. Around 4:15 p.m., the police responded to a 911 call regarding a man on the second floor of a building on Canal Street near Eldridge Street, Chief Kenny said.

After almost two decades of failed attempts to reopen, a landmark Upper West Side movie theater may be resurrected with a plan from a potential new buyer and celebrity support. They have formed the Upper West Side Cinema Center, a nonprofit corporation, whose website lists Martin Scorsese, Ethan Hawke and John Turturro as advisers, along with Bob Balaban, Griffin Dunne and the “American Psycho” director Mary Harron. (They would call it the Metro Cinema Center.) Representatives for Scorsese and Dunne confirmed their involvement. The proposal includes a five-screen theater dedicated to art house releases, classic film and special events; it would also have an education center and a cafe.

The Health Department said Beth Israel must fund an expansion of the emergency room at Bellevue, the flagship of the city’s public hospital system. Another condition is that Beth Israel must run an urgent care center, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for three months. A spokesman for the Mount Sinai hospital system, Loren Riegelhaupt, said in a statement that Beth Israel would remain open and accept patients, for now. Beth Israel was founded in 1889, initially as a dispensary serving mainly Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side.

Dear Tripped Up,Last September, my husband and I flew to New York City and headed to the Ridge Hotel on the Lower East Side to spend a few days before a cruise. Since the Ridge had “contactless check-in,” we had received two codes to get in the front entrance and our room. So we spent the night in the hotel’s breakfast room, where the restroom also required a code that we did not have. The next morning, the hotel staff sent an apologetic message with the right code, and promised us a refund for that night, about $215. But paying that much to sleep fitfully in the breakfast room with no access to a bathroom and (I’m guessing) no 24-hour waffle maker?

Two people were killed and at least nine others were injured after an apparently impaired driver plowed a pickup truck into a crowd of people celebrating July 4 in a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the authorities said. Several of the injured were transported to hospitals, two of them in critical condition, the authorities said at a news conference on Thursday night. A police spokesman confirmed by phone that one person had been taken into custody. Speaking at the news conference, Mayor Eric Adams of New York said that though investigations were preliminary, the incident did not appear to be “terrorist related.” Officers responding to the scene smelled alcohol on the driver, and the police were conducting tests to confirm, officials said. Police said that just before 9 p.m., a Ford F-150 driving eastbound at high speed down Water Street sped through a stop sign, up onto the sidewalk and into Corlears Hook Park, where a crowd of people were celebrating the holiday.

CNN —The former executive assistant of a tech CEO was found guilty Monday of murdering his boss – whom he then decapitated and dismembered – in 2020, according to a news release from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. A jury on Monday found Haspil guilty of one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree grand larceny, one count of second-degree burglary and other charges, according to the DA’s office statement. Haspil became Saleh’s assistant in May 2018, where he was tasked with a variety of responsibilities including handling Saleh’s finances – which is how he gained access to Saleh’s financial records, according to the DA’s office release. That fall, Haspil began stealing from Saleh’s companies using two separate schemes, the DA’s office stated. The next day, Haspil returned to the apartment “to dismember the body and clean up the crime scene,” according to the release.

It had been about a week since President Biden signed a law that says TikTok must be sold from its Chinese parent company or face a potential ban, and marketers were champing at the bit to hear TikTok’s thoughts. Blake Chandlee, TikTok’s president of global business solutions, kicked off the evening by thanking advertisers for their “tremendous support and trust” and said that the company considered the law unconstitutional and would challenge it in court. “We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side and that we will ultimately prevail,” Mr. Chandlee told more than 300 attendees, some of whom couldn’t find chairs in the crowd. “I want you to know we are not backing down.”But for the rest of the roughly 45-minute presentation, which took place in a large gallery with the fuchsia and light blue lights of TikTok’s logo, it was business as usual.

He was a model to me of artistic labor and discipline, even if those early paintings were painfully amateurish. The painting followed me from Amherst to my first job in New York, and on to London and Delhi. IT WASN’T MY intention to start an essay about artistic beginnings with a story of artistic death. I’m especially moved by those first moments of validation by which an artist comes out to himself, as it were. It’s this, the inexorability of the correspondence between an artist and the world, that gives those first steps their magical quality.

But instead of purchasing new items, they knew it would be more affordable to find secondhand items on Facebook Marketplace, the social network’s buy-and-sell service. “I only use Facebook for Marketplace,” said Ms. Chiu, 24, who added that she spent most of her social time on TikTok and Instagram, which is owned by Meta, Facebook’s parent company.
