Max Hardy, who helped bring a new level of chef-driven yet accessible cuisine to his native Detroit, and who was widely considered among the most promising of a young generation of Black culinary stars, died on Monday. His publicist, David E. Rudolph, announced the death but did not provide a cause or location. He said Mr. Hardy had been in good health as recently as the weekend. Though he was born in Detroit, Mr. Hardy moved with his family to South Florida when he was young. He married those influences with a deep love for South Carolina Lowcountry cuisine like shrimp and grits, fried fish and hoppin’ John.

In many ways, the overgrown cemetery on a South Carolina rice plantation where my paternal ancestors are buried is emblematic of Black history itself. On my first visit in 2013, I went in search of the Fields family graves. There I found many unmarked graves, some of them nothing more than sunken depressions, as far as the eye could see. African Americans searching for their family histories often have only small irregular pieces of an enormous puzzle. Until recently, identifying enslaved and formerly enslaved people who lived before that time was virtually impossible.

But in the state where Haley once served as governor, she has trailed Trump by sizable margins in most polling. AdvertisementFormer President Donald Trump waves to supporters after a rally in North Charleston, S.C., on February 14, 2024. A Suffolk University/USA TODAY poll among likely GOP voters had Trump leading Haley 63%-35%, a 28-point spread. For many GOP voters, Trump is who they know best. And as the South Carolina primary ends Saturday night, that sentiment is Haley's biggest impediment to a victory.

I cried the day my son was accepted into a public school pre-k program. After four years of dreading his monthly Montessori school tuition, it felt like we had finally summited Mt. There I was, an alternative weekly editor, and my husband, a young high school teacher. Thus, the waterworks the day we learned our 4-year-old had been accepted to a public school via the Montessori lottery. But as all too many parents know, the high price of private day care tuition doesn't go away with the final statement of charges.

No surprise then, that Haley's presidential campaign website features a "Record of Results" tab with more than a dozen subtopics. The competitionTypically, a presidential campaign makes it as easy as possible for the public to learn what the candidate would do if elected. But a curious voter who visited Haley's campaign website would need to navigate through press clips and TV appearances to find one. CNBC reached out to Haley's campaign to ask why they do not have a comprehensive policy agenda on the campaign site. The link revealed something unexpected: The document did not appear under any of the sections into which Haley's campaign site was divided, like "News," or "About Nikki" or "Action Center."

Convicted killer Alex Murdaugh struck a plea deal Friday, days before the start of his trial in South Carolina's sprawling case against him in dozens of financial crimes. For more on the case, watch "The Murdaugh Murders: Inside the Investigation" on "Dateline" at 9 ET/8 CT Friday. Murdaugh has proclaimed his innocence in the fatal shootings of his wife and son since a grand jury indicted him in the murders last year. Prosecutors alleged he killed them to gain pity before he would be exposed for a slew of financial crimes. In return, his federal sentence must run at the same time as any sentence imposed in his state case.

Murdaugh was facing dozens of state charges in alleged schemes to defraud victims of millions. Lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said the deal would bring “finality to the matter” and ensure Murdaugh would “stay in state prison for a very long time.” The agreement, if approved, would see Murdaugh spend a total of 27 years in a South Carolina state prison, according to Waters. “Alex Murdaugh’s guilty plea will finally allow his financial victims to begin the process of healing,” Eric “EB” Bland and Ronnie Richter, attorneys for some of the victims, said in a statement. It also only covers the state financial charges and does not address any of the remaining county charges Murdaugh faces. Judge Newman sentenced Murdaugh to two consecutive life sentences in a South Carolina state prison, which Murdaugh is currently serving.

Rep. Nancy Mace's stock has risen in Trumpworld, with some speculating she could be Trump's VP choice. Trump endorsed Mace's GOP primary opponent last year. "I'm willing to bury the hatchet to save the country, and I know President Trump is too." The Trumpworld aides noted that Mace could boost Trump among suburban women, a demographic where he faltered in his 2020 reelection campaign. "The fact that Nancy has been a constant and consistent presence in defense of President Trump has not gone unnoticed," Trump advisor Chris LaCivita told Politico of Mace's most recent statements.

The party started early. Like, 10:30 a.m., still-drinking-lousy-hotel-coffee early. I did not expect him to arrive in a fully stocked party bus with several of his closest associates, including his longtime collaborator David Gordon Green, though in retrospect perhaps I should have. On cue, his wife, Gia, an art director, furnished a bottle of Código 1530. “This is George Strait’s tequila!” McBride beamed, and a look ping-ponged around the bus that asked, “Too early?”It was not too early.

‘After Sherman’ Review: A Family Reckoning

In the elegiac documentary “After Sherman,” cameras glide along waterways, soar above marshes, contemplate churches and travel down Southern roads lined by trees, the moss hanging like braids. Under the director Jon-Sesrie Goff’s gaze, these places are sacred, even as they remain haunted by a nation’s grievous racial history. “I’m Gullah, born in exile,” says Goff, who is based in New York, describing his place among the Gullah Geechee people of South Carolina. Dr. Norvel Goff Sr., a descendant of formerly enslaved people who purchased land in South Carolina after emancipation. Reverend Goff, who owns property in the Lowcountry, was also the interim pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, after a self-identified white supremacist killed nine Black parishioners gathered for Bible study one evening in June 2015.

Goldman Sachs' M&A team operates under a similar mandate, albeit with a few more zeros. Why bother stressing over 10 $1 billion deals when you can just do a $10 billion deal? It's not just the M&A market that's facing issues. The bank has held the top spot on the year-end M&A league tables for decades, but it is hearing footsteps. But the perceived spectacle means that not only will Murdaugh be on display — so will the county seat of Walterboro, population 5,460. “We didn’t want this, but it’s happening, and it’s here,” Scott Grooms, Walterboro’s director of tourism and downtown development, said last week.
