At six million acres, New York’s Adirondack Park is the size of Vermont, and larger than all of New Jersey. A unique mix of state and private property that encompasses mountains, wilderness areas and lakes, the park draws more than 12 million visitors annually who want to hike, paddle, explore and more. I’ve vacationed in the park for the past 16 years, appreciating its wild beauty more each time I visit. Even with the park’s size — 10 distinct regions and 20 wilderness areas lie within its borders — many visitors don’t venture far from the park’s population centers. “The quieter parts of the park are untouched,” said Jane Hooper, communications manager for the area’s Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism.

The Power-Building Workout

Over the past several years, experts have increasingly recognized the importance of building power — using muscles in explosive bursts — for healthy aging. Power helps you heave a bag of mulch into the trunk and allows your arms or legs to stop or catch yourself when you slip. While strength helps you sit down in a chair, power brings you out of it. (Take the sit-to-stand test in 30 seconds.) Quickly lift your hips up into a glute bridge position (power), then lower them slowly back down to the ground (strength).

Amanda Loudin moved from Maryland to Boulder, Colorado but returned home after two years. So you'd think a move from Maryland to Boulder, Colorado would've been the perfect match for me. Moving to Boulder wasn't what I expectedI'm one of the many remote workers who took a leap during the pandemic and relocated. I always thought I'd retire in Colorado, but during the pandemic, I decided to move up my timeline and go now. I don't think people in Boulder are unfriendly, just different from what I'm used to in the mid-Atlantic, where I've lived my entire adult life.

Every year, more than a million people around the world run a marathon. For some, it will be one of many, but for others, it will be a highlight of their lives. If you’re drawn to the challenge and excitement of running a “26.2” this year (or sometime in the future), you’ve got work to do. Most marathoners train for about 16 weeks to prepare, which means starting now for a fall race. That means focusing on lower-effort miles where you can accomplish the “three Cs,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.

Tennis Elbow is a Real Pain. Here’s How to Treat It.
  + stars: | 2023-05-17 | by ( Amanda Loudin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Now that warm weather is here to stay, many Americans are getting back into their favorite outdoor sports and starting home projects. Which means, among other things, the annual uptick in tennis elbow. It starts with a persistent, localized pain on the outside of your elbow (or inside, in the case of the closely related golf elbow), and slowly gets more debilitating. Causes run the gamut but may include using a hammer for extended periods of time, painting, softball, weight lifting and even gardening. If you suspect that you’re dealing with tennis or golf elbow, there are ways to heal, return to activity and hopefully keep the pain at bay in the future.
Bulbous and gaudy, the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2 feature a carbon-fiber footplate, promising energy return with each step. Mr. Kipchoge theoretically could have slayed the record sans the shoes, but it is telling he’s worn them each time he’s tried. Now less-stellar runners are asking themselves if their shoes need carbon plates too. Minimalist sneakers, like the unmistakable Vibram FiveFingers, gained cachet over a decade ago for encouraging a low-impact gait. But carbon-plated shoes are explicitly designed to maximize speed by cutting down on the energy lost when the foot bends, seizing the imagination of podium seekers.
