The rise of remote work, high interest rates, and climate regulations all pose problems for office buildings. A new study found that more than 2,000 US office buildings could be converted into up to 400,000 apartments. And new environmental regulations require that buildings meet certain energy efficiency standards that can require costly renovations. Turning office buildings into apartments isn't a new concept, and it's one that New York City has embraced in theory. Of course, office buildings require some retrofitting to be turned from sprawling workplaces to livable apartments.

Mondays in the office could be "dead forever," one of New York's biggest landlords says. One of New York's biggest private landlords, Vornado Realty Trust, is betting on hybrid work being here to stay. The firm's chairman, Steven Roth, told investors recently that office work on Fridays is likely "dead forever." Office visits on Mondays and Fridays, however, remain just half of what they were in 2019, according to the report. The current push toward hybrid work comes as some companies are doubling down on employees returning to the office.

The LA Metro blasted classical music in one of its stations to deter people from hanging out there. But the composer said he wasn't informed his music was being used and demanded Metro stop using it. But that came to an end when one composer was informed his work was being used as a deterrent. But it faced pushback when news outlets reported that it was blasting music, including Barcelona-based composer Adrián Berenguer's four-minute piece "Immaterial", which it played on loop. The Westlake/MacArthur Park station played different classical music by long-dead composers, including Beethoven and Bach, at lower volumes on Thursday, L.A. Taco reported.
Higher mortgage rates weighed on home price gains at the end of 2022. While prices were still higher than they were a year earlier, the rate of increase slowed quickly, according to data released Tuesday. Home prices in December were 5.8% higher than the previous December, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price NSA Index. For all of 2022, the 5.8% price gain was the 15th best performance in the index's 35-year history, but was well below 2021's record-setting 18.9% gain. Weekly data on buyer activity indicates that homebuyers may be watching mortgage rates closely.
Los AngelesA commuter sits in a Los Angeles Metro train in Los Angeles, Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Jae C. Hong/APLos Angeles was ranked ninth out of the North American cities on Oliver Wyman Forum's list and 37 out of the 60 transit systems examined across the globe. The city might be a surprising addition considering it is known for its vehicle traffic congestion. Only 6% of LA residents use the city's public transportation, which tends to be slow and lacks "a sufficient density of stations," according to the Oliver Wyman Forum. However, the city gained some points for its 2020 Long Range Transportation Plan, which dedicates $80 billion over the next 30 years to upgrading Los Angeles County metro system and expanding it to serve more than 200 stations.
Twitter suspended several high-profile journalists Thursday evening who have been covering the company and Elon Musk. The suspensions come a day after Twitter changed its policies around accounts that track private jets, including one owned by Elon Musk. The Twitter account for Mastodon, a platform billed as an alternative, was also suspended early Thursday evening. As of Thursday evening, Twitter accounts operated by NBC News journalists were unable to tweet a link to the Mastodon account of @ElonJet. The suspensions add to what has been a tumultuous couple of days for Twitter after the company first suspended the account that tracked Musk’s jet.
The Hyperloop prototype tube was removed from its location outside of SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif, reports say. The above-ground test tunnel was installed in 2016, but sat idle for years, according to the LA Times. The LA Times reported that Hawthorne Council member Angie Reyes English asked city staff to request the removal of the tube. According to the LA Times, it drew complaints from pedestrians and motorists before the city stepped in to have it dismantled. The ambitious invention would reportedly cut the commute from Los Angeles to San Francisco down to 35 minutes, LA Times reported.
