The S & P 500 is on the verge of something unexpected — especially for September. The broad market index entered the week less than 1% below a record last reached in July. Krinky isn't the only one on the Street treading carefully with the S & P 500 near record highs. "With the S & P 500 close to our YE 2024 price target again, we remain neutral on the S & P 500 for now," wrote Lori Calvasina, head of global equity research at RBC Capital Markets. "However, after a sharp move lower in 10-year yields, the earnings yield gap for the S & P 500 is starting to head in a more favorable direction for stocks," Calvasina added.

Slowing rate of change in earnings growth There are two important trends to follow in earnings. In the case of Nvidia, earnings are continuing to increase, but the rate of change is decelerating. This earnings report will likely be the final time in this stretch that Nvidia will see triple-digit earnings growth. But the impact has been shrinking – just as the overall Mag 7 impact has been diminishing with second quarter earnings growth broadening out. Last season (Q1), Nvidia was responsible for a little more than one-third of the S & P 500's 8% earnings growth.

BTIG's chief market technician warned Sunday that, while the pullback seen early last week generated some "tactical buy signals," he thinks the "bulk of the bounce has likely run its course and [we] would use strength … to lighten exposure." RBC Capital Markets increased its 2024 year-end target for the S & P 500, but the bank is taking a cautious stance on its market outlook.
