At that event, Musk boasted, "It will be the biggest product launch of anything by far on Earth this year." At the event in Austin, Musk said the Cybertruck's hard steel body was bulletproof, and that its windows were "rock proof." Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck — with its angular and unpainted hard steel body — in November 2019. The covid pandemic and other factors contributed to a two-year delay however, and Tesla only began early Cybertruck production in July this year. The U.S. electric pickup truck market has not expanded as quickly as some thought when the Cybertruck was initially revealed.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Electric vehicle company Lordstown Motors received U.S. bankruptcy court approval Wednesday to sell its manufacturing assets to a new company affiliated with its founder and former CEO Stephen Burns for $10.2 million. LAS Capital, majority-owned by Burns, will acquire Lordstown's intellectual property, business records, and machinery including assembly lines for electric vehicle motors and batteries. The sale does not include any rights to pursue legal claims against Lordstown's directors, officers or equity owners, which will remain with the bankrupt company, Lordstown Motors' attorney David Turetsky said at the court hearing. Several investor groups have already brought claims against Lordstown and its directors, alleging that the electric truck startup misled consumers and investors about its ability to ramp up electric vehicle production.

"It's really something, listening to johnny-come-latelys parroting my talking points on corporate bankruptcies (which none of them saw coming 6 mo's ago). Even if the sale generates enough money for a shareholder payout, Lordstown proposed to pay nothing to the 300,000 preferred equity shares held by its estranged former business partner Foxconn. Lordstown alleged that Foxconn purchased only $30 million of the $100 million in preferred equity shares contemplated by the disputed investment agreement. Foxconn also purchased $22.7 million of Lordstown's common shares, owning about 8.4% of the company's equity, according to court documents. Foxconn had asked a U.S. bankruptcy judge to dismiss Lordstown's bankruptcy, a request that the judge denied on Aug. 28.

REUTERS/Bing Guan/file photoAug 7 (Reuters) - Electric-vehicle parts supplier Proterra (PTRA.O) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, making it the latest company to go belly up in an industry grappling with supply chain constraints, slowing demand and a funding drought. The move comes weeks after Lordstown Motors filed for bankruptcy protection and put itself up for sale after failing to resolve a dispute over a promised investment from Foxconn. The company had a market value of $362 million as of last close. In January 2021, Proterra was valued at $1.6 billion, including debt, in a merger deal with a blank-check firm. Proterra, which makes electric buses as well as battery packs, said it intends to continue to operate in the ordinary course of business.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File photoAug 4 (Reuters) - Nikola (NKLA.O) on Friday named its fourth CEO in as many years as the electric truck maker navigates a host of challenges including dwindling cash reserves, lingering supply chain snags and a pivot to hydrogen fuel cell technology. The Tre battery-electric trucks maker forecast third-quarter revenue of $18 million to $28 million, compared with estimates of $34.5 million, according to Visible Alpha. Nikola's investors approved a proposal that will allow the truck maker to issue more shares to raise funds. Milton stepped down as CEO in 2020 after short-seller Hindenburg issued a scathing report that labeled Nikola a "fraud." Separately, Nikola reported a narrower second-quarter loss as lower production of its Tre battery-electric trucks in the April-June period helped keep costs in check.

The squeeze has already claimed its first casualty in electric truck maker Lordstown Motors (RIDEQ.PK), which filed for bankruptcy in June. Companies including Lucid (LCID.O) and Nikola (NKLA.O) are likely to report another quarter of steep cash burn, as they continue to struggle with production and demand. Nikola, which reiterated a going-concern warning in May, is expected to report a 15% decline in revenue and widening losses on Friday. Its shares have rallied nearly 40% this year as the company attempts to reduce its cash burn with layoffs and the liquidation of a recently acquired battery business. But the company missed its production target in the quarter due to a parts shortage.

California-based Karma Automotive sued Lordstown in 2020 for allegedly poaching its employees and stealing technology used in vehicle infotainment systems. July 11 (Reuters) - Faraday Future Intelligent Electric (FFIE.O) said on Tuesday its interim finance chief has resigned and the company will restate its financial statements for 2022 and the quarter ended March 2023 after it uncovered some errors, highlighting continued turmoil at the electric vehicle firm. The company, which had raised going-concern doubts last year, appointed outsider Jonathan Maroko as its new interim chief financial officer, effective July 24. Faraday Future also said its annual report for 2022, quarters ending September 2022 and March 2023 "should no longer be relied upon" due to certain errors. The company will file restated financial statements and the move will not affect its vehicle delivery timeline, it added. Last month the company secured $90 million funding commitment from existing investors and had in May announced plans to raise $100 million in debt.

July 7 (Reuters) - Fisker (FSR.N) missed its production target for the second quarter due to shortage of components, the electric vehicle startup disclosed on Friday, sending its shares down 2% in premarket trading. The California-based company produced 1,022 units of its Ocean SUV in the quarter ended June, lower than 1,400-1,700 vehicles it had projected. Fisker, which will report its second-quarter earnings on August 4, produced 55 vehicles in the March quarter. The production figures come as some EV firms face dwindling cash reserves, pressured by high costs related to production ramp-ups and inflation. Last month, Lordstown Motors filed for bankruptcy protection, while Electric Last Mile Solutions filed the same last year.

Arrival, Nikola signal more pain for EV startups

July 3 (Reuters) - Arrival SA will terminate plans to merge with a blank-check firm and Nikola Corp will offload its newly acquired battery unit, the companies said on Monday, amplifying concerns over the struggles electric vehicle (EV) startups face in building scale. Meanwhile, Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) will liquidate the assets of Romeo Power, an EV battery maker it acquired less than a year ago, to energize the business. In contrast, electric vehicle behemoth Tesla (TSLA.O) and California-based Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O) beat market estimates for second-quarter deliveries. Arrival had in April bet that the second reverse merger would release $283 million of cash held in trust before redemptions. The EV startup in May reported a 37% slump in cash and cash equivalent at the end of the first three months of the year, from the preceding quarter.

July 3 (Reuters) - Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) will start liquidating the assets of battery maker Romeo Power, the electric truck maker said on Monday, less than a year after buying it. Nikola in August agreed to buy Romeo Power for about $144 million in stock, as it looked to jump-start efforts to make battery packs. "Nikola is discontinuing its operations with Romeo Power and has commenced a proceeding under the California Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC) statutory scheme," a company spokesperson said in a statement on Monday. In contrast, market leader Tesla (TSLA.O) topped market expectations for second-quarter deliveries, after price cuts and U.S. federal credits helped make its electric vehicles more affordable. Romeo Power is one of the battery suppliers for Nikola's prototype electric trucks along with LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) and Proterra Inc (PTRA.O).
