The Lordstown plant opened in 1966; GM closed it just months before its contract with the UAW expired in 2019. The former GM plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The Ultium plant, just over a third of the size of the closed Lordstown plant, started building batteries last August. Justin Brown’s father worked at the Lordstown plant for nearly nearly 50 years; Brown, for 10 years. Some Ultium workers said they took the lower-paying job with the expectation that they would someday make GM-level pay.

Lordstown has alleged that Foxconn broke its promises to invest $170 million in Lordstown and collaborate with the company on vehicle development plans. Lordstown had struggled with higher-than-expected costs, production shortfalls, and litigation risk well before Foxconn agreed to purchase Lordstown's Ohio manufacturing vehicle center in 2021, Murphy said. Several investor groups have also brought claims against Lordstown, alleging that the electric truck startup misled consumers and investors.

Lordstown contends Foxconn is balking at purchasing additional shares of its stock as promised and misled the EV maker about collaborating on vehicle development plans. Lordstown accused Foxconn in that regulatory filing of engaging in a "pattern of bad faith" that caused "material and irreparable harm" to the company. GM agreed to sell the plant to a newly-formed entity called Lordstown Motors founded by the former top executive at an electric truck maker called Workhorse Group.

DETROIT – Stellantis said Friday that it plans to indefinitely idle a Jeep plant in Illinois, starting early next year, to cut costs as it invests in electric vehicles. The transatlantic automaker, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said the plant will cease production as of Feb. 28. The more than 1,200 workers at the facility, which produces Jeep Cherokee SUVs, will be placed on indefinite layoffs, the company said. In late-2018, ahead of the 2019 UAW negotiations with the Detroit automakers, General Motors announced plans to potentially close several facilities. Only one of the major assembly plants – Lordstown Assembly in Ohio – for the automaker actually ended up closing following the negotiations.
