Medicare patients lining up to fill pricey prescriptions at the pharmacy counter this year will realize some good news: For the first time, there is a ceiling on how much they will pay in 2024 for their Part D drugs. Changes brought about by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act mean that people on Part D plans now pay no more than roughly $3,300 on drugs annually—a number that could shift a bit based on whether they take brand or generic medications. In 2025, that cap will change again to a flat $2,000.
The nation’s infant-mortality rate is double that of many developed countries. Photo: iStockThe rate of babies dying in the U.S. increased significantly for the first time in two decades, raising new alarms about maternal-infant health in America. The nation’s infant-mortality rate rose 3% from 2021 to 2022, reversing a decadeslong overall decline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. The rate increased from 5.44 infant deaths for every 1,000 births to 5.6 in 2022, a statistically significant uptick.

Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, a surgeon by training, previously taught at Harvard Medical School. Photo: Jeff Chiu/Associated PressPresident Biden nominated Dr. Monica Bertagnolli to head the National Institutes of Health and steer the federal government’s pursuit of cutting-edge medical research. The Wall Street Journal in April first reported the White House’s pick. Monday’s nomination would end a 17-month search to find a scientist to head an agency, with a $47 billion yearly budget, that plays an important role conducting and funding disease, drug and vaccine research.
Drug pricing is complicated and secretive. WSJ explains how the flow of money, drugs and rebates behind the scenes may drive up the price of prescription medicine for consumers. Illustration: Mallory BranganRepublicans and Democrats in Congress may find rare agreement in the coming months on legislation taking aim at high drug costs. The lawmakers are rolling out proposals that aim to reduce drug spending by insurers and government agencies, as well as by patients at the pharmacy trying to fill prescriptions for diabetes and other medicines.
Calls to poison-control centers from caregivers worried about melatonin their children ingested have grown sharply. Photo: Jeff Greenberg/Universal Images Greoup via Getty ImagesPeople who consume melatonin gummies to get a good night’s rest might be ingesting more natural sleep aid than they bargained for, scientists say. In an analysis of 25 melatonin gummy brands, researchers found that most had more melatonin than their label disclosed—with one brand’s product containing nearly 350% more, according to the analysis published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Another brand said its gummies contained melatonin and cannabinoid oil, though researchers found that they really contained only cannabidiol, an ingredient derived from cannabis.
Weight-Loss Drugmakers Lobby for Medicare Coverage
  + stars: | 2023-04-24 | by ( Liz Essley Whyte | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Illustration: Elizabeth SmelovWeight-loss drugmakers are lobbying Congress to grant them access to a monster payday for their blockbuster treatments: Medicare coverage. New drugs to treat diabetes and obesity are helping people shed pounds and generating huge sales for Novo Nordisk AS and Eli Lilly & Co. But they cost hundreds of dollars a month or more and Medicare doesn’t cover them to treat obesity. The law governing Medicare’s prescription-drug benefit excludes weight drugs. If that changed, demand from the 65 million older and disabled people insured through Medicare could push sales even higher.
The NIH’s $47 billion budget gives it a powerful role in investigating diseases and exploring new treatments. Photo: Eric Lee for The Wall Street JournalThe White House is nearing a decision to nominate Monica Bertagnolli to run the federal government’s National Institutes of Health life-sciences research agency, people familiar with the matter said. Since October, Dr. Bertagnolli has been running the National Cancer Institute, the largest of the 27 research institutes that make up the NIH.
The CDC’s signoff is the last regulatory step before the new vaccine regimen can become widely available. Photo: Rogelio V. Solis/Associated PressThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that people receiving Covid-19 messenger RNA vaccines for the first time receive one dose of the newer shots that target both Omicron and the original strain of the virus. The agency also said Wednesday that people at high risk of severe Covid-19 could take second boosters of the dual-target shots, though it didn’t recommend them outright.
Photo Illustration: Preston JesseeWASHINGTON—The Supreme Court allowed the widely used abortion pill mifepristone to remain on the market through Friday, while the justices continue to weigh whether to block a lower-court order that would limit access to the drug. The extension came in a pair of brief orders issued Wednesday by Justice Samuel Alito , who oversees emergency matters for the courts in Texas, where a lawsuit contesting the pill’s approval originated.
The vaccine will target both the Omicron variant and the original strain of the Covid-19 virus. Americans seeking messenger RNA vaccines for Covid-19 for the first time will get one, updated shot targeting both the Omicron variant and the original strain of the virus under new moves rolled out Tuesday by federal health officials. The Food and Drug Administration also authorized a second booster of the updated shots for people at high risk of Covid-19, specifically people 65 years and older or people who have weak immune systems.
Proposed telehealth rules call for in-person visit for online prescriptions of controlled-substance drugs such as buprenorphine, a medication for opioid-use disorder. WASHINGTON—A federal plan to resume tighter limits on the prescribing of controlled substances through telehealth has spurred a backlash from some medical and patient advocacy groups who say the requirements would create barriers to care. The organizations are urging the Drug Enforcement Administration to reconsider proposed rules that would let doctors remotely prescribe a 30-day supply of some drugs, including buprenorphine for opioid-use disorder, as well as ketamine and testosterone, but require at least one in-person visit for further prescriptions.
A fast-moving legal battle over the abortion pill is heading to the Supreme Court after a federal appeals court allowed the drug to remain on the market but imposed significant restrictions on its use. The order issued by the New Orleans-based Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals late Wednesday in effect returns restrictions on the drug, known as mifepristone, to what they were before 2016, when the pill could only be used through about seven weeks of pregnancy, required three in-person doctor’s visits and couldn’t be sent to patients through the mail.
