WASHINGTON — A triumphant President-elect Donald Trump huddled with House Republicans before their leadership elections Wednesday and threw his support behind Speaker Mike Johnson, a key ally, as the GOP prepares for unified control of government next year. Trump, the 45th and future 47th president, got multiple standing ovations from rank-and-file Republicans at the meeting. After the event with Republicans, Trump headed to the White House for a meeting with President Joe Biden. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., said Trump's meeting with Republicans was less about specific policy proposals and more of a "rah-rah address." Even before Trump's endorsement, Republicans were expected to nominate Johnson to continue as speaker in the 119th Congress.

“Anti-Israel protests on college campuses threaten Jewish students,” says the ad, which was shared first with CNN. While supporters of the legislation say it will help combat antisemitism on college campuses, opponents argue it overreaches and threatens to chill free speech. Some Democrats see the new investigative effort into college campuses and Johnson’s recent visit to Columbia University as a divisive political ploy. “Clearly it’s a very high priority for him,” GOP Rep. Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, the chairman of the House Science Committee, told CNN. House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, who sits on the Education panel, is also expected to play a prominent role in the effort.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik tried to avoid the firestorm of controversy that pushed out two of the three university presidents who testified on Capitol Hill in December. While the other university presidents provided lawyerly answers that went viral, Shafik and her three Columbia colleagues all unequivocally stated that such calls would violate the code of conduct at Columbia. For instance, the Columbia president was asked by Rep. Lisa McClain whether mobs shouting “from the river to the sea” or “long live the intifada” qualify as antisemitic comments. Some people don’t.”Only after David Schizer, the co-chair of Columbia’s task force on antisemitism, indicated it would qualify as antisemitism did Shafik agree. Davidai called Shafik a “coward” in a fiery speech last year criticizing the university president for failing to quiet “pro-terror” voices at the school.

A mission led by a United States congressman rescued the author Mitch Albom and several other Americans from Haiti early Tuesday as the Caribbean nation faces violent upheaval. Mr. Albom, who wrote “Tuesdays With Morrie” and “The Five People You Meet in Heaven,” said in a statement that he and a group from Have Faith Haiti, an orphanage he runs in Port-au-Prince, were evacuated after sheltering in place since a state of emergency was declared in the country this month. Representative Cory Mills, a Florida Republican and a U.S. Army veteran, led the mission in coordination with Representative Lisa McClain, a Michigan Republican. Mr. Albom lives in the Detroit area. The rescue came as a humanitarian crisis rapidly unfolds in Haiti amid the country’s worst political upheavals in years.

U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) speaks at the National Action Network’s (NAN) three-day annual national convention on April 07, 2022 in New York City. Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., indicated Wednesday that he will plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge for pulling a fire alarm in a congressional building on Capitol Hill last month. Bowman has agreed to pay the maximum fine of $1,000 for one misdemeanor count of falsely pulling a fire alarm — a charge that carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail. After the vote, Bowman said, he also met with the sergeant at arms and Capitol Police at their request and explained what happened. "I want to be very clear, this was not me, in any way, trying to delay any vote," Bowman said.

House Democrats were mostly stuck in DC for 3 weeks as the GOP struggled to choose a new speaker. Some Democrats told Insider they found a silver lining, like hitting the gym or dog-sitting. That left Democrats, already lined up behind House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, scrambling to find other things to fill the time. "I almost forget what it's like to be in committee at this point," Rep. Becca Balint of Vermont told Insider on Tuesday. Balint said that a "personal source of joy" for her was getting to dog sit Rep. Sharice Davids' rescue dog, Peanut.

Trump endorsed Jim Jordan for speaker of the House — but it won't be enough to get him the job. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe race to succeed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is on, and Rep. Jim Jordan just scored what may be the best outside endorsement a Republican could get — former President Donald Trump. Since Trump endorsed the Ohio Republican on Thursday evening, several House conservatives have done just that. Just ask former Rep. Liz Cheney, or any of the other House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump and were primaried out of a job. Trump doesn't have as much sway on Capitol Hill as you thinkThis may come as a surprise, but Republicans on Capitol Hill — even those that support his 2024 candidacy — ignore Trump all the time.

CNN —Rep. Jamaal Bowman pulled a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building on Saturday morning, shortly before the House was scheduled to vote on a government funding bill, an incident the New York Democrat said was an accident. Steil told CNN on Saturday evening that Bowman needed to be “far more forthcoming” about what happened when he decided to pull the fire alarm. “We know Jamaal Bowman pulled the fire alarm. His initial explanation, that it was an accident, doesn’t seem to really pass muster,” Steil told CNN’s Jim Acosta. Bowman, however, laughed off the GOP response to the incident on Saturday, telling reporters, “They’re gonna do what they do.

GOP lawmakers introduced a bill to overturn Biden's new SAVE income-driven repayment plan. Borrowers can now apply for the SAVE plan before bills become due next month. It also estimated that an additional 1 million low-income borrowers would experience that benefit, and the plan would save all other borrowers at $1,000 a year compared to other income-driven repayment plans. However, the Republican lawmakers seeking to overturn that plan argued it's an overreach of authority and would cost taxpayers. While Republicans opposed that relief, as well, Biden is moving forward with implementing the new repayment plan as borrowers begin to face another monthly bill.

CNN —The ISIS-K leader who planned the deadly 2021 suicide bombing at the Kabul international airport’s Abbey Gate was killed by the Taliban, according to the National Security Council. Kirby did not specify when the Taliban killed the ISIS-K leader, but called it one in a “series of high-profile leadership losses” that ISIS-K has suffered this year. The terrorist who carried out the suicide bombing, Abdul Rehman Al-Loghri, had been released from prison only days earlier when the Taliban took control of the area. ISIS-K stands for ISIS-Khorasan, the terror organization’s affiliate that is active in Afghanistan and the surrounding region. Taylor Hoover, who was killed in the bombing, told CNN that he was notified by the military Tuesday morning.
House Republican leaders have stocked the oversight panel with partisan bomb-throwers. Many of the new panelists voted to overturn the 2020 election and defied Jan. 6 investigators. Retired Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who chaired the House Oversight Committee last session, asserted that this new cast of characters were getting into it for the wrong reasons. "The personal vendettas these committees pursue are not a legitimate use of the oversight power. "These are basically the people who own Kevin McCarthy at this point," Bardella told Insider at the Facts First event.
Congress should require colleges to give students an accurate price for the cost of attendance, the Government Accountability Office said in a recent report that found that most colleges fail to provide all the financial information students need. Prospective college students usually receive a financial aid letter from schools once they are accepted. “Federal law doesn’t require colleges to include clear, standard information in all of their financial aid offers. The bill is one of many legislative efforts that aim to provide students and their families better information about the cost of college. In addition, last month, the Department of Justice released new guidance that aims to make it easier to have federal student loan debt discharged in bankruptcy – a particularly difficult legal process under the previous policy.
Specifically, 91% of colleges are understating the net price, which can mislead students into taking on more debt. Current federal law does not require colleges to follow standards when presenting financial aid packages. Not counting student loans in the total cost could present a misleading picture of how expensive a degree would be, pushing students further into debt. "Colleges that estimate the net price by subtracting student loans from the cost of attendance do not present the full net price because students generally must repay their student loans eventually," the report said. "Additionally, subtracting student loans in the net price estimate presents loans as the default method for paying for college, potentially encouraging students to borrow more than they otherwise would."
Attorney general hopeful Matt DePerno is trying to unseat incumbent Dana Nessel in Michigan. Because the only thing Republicans across the Wolverine State seem to expect from the barely known candidate is that his winning will make incumbent Democratic attorney general Dana Nessel suffer like they say they did during the pandemic. hopeful Shane Hernandez, and former Florida attorney general and Trump impeachment lawyer Pam Bondi warmed up the crowd for headliner Tudor Dixon, the Trump-backed candidate challenging incumbent Democratic Gov. "When I'm attorney general: No more lockdowns! DePerno also brought up crime, fentanyl, defunding the police, and parental rights — but didn't say a word about election integrity.
In the next Congress, white men will also lead the House GOP campaign arm, the National Congressional Campaign Committee (NRCC), and occupy other lower-tier leadership spots. The highest leadership post that Republican women or minorities have reached is chair of the GOP Conference — the No. She's expected to remain the highest-ranking GOP woman in the whole of the next Congress as well, given that white men make up all but one member of the Senate GOP leadership team. Eighty GOP women are running for House seats in these midterms. For his part, Donalds, whom Trump once called a “rising star,” has not made diversity a central part of his campaign for conference chair.
