CNN —Lionel Messi is widely considered the greatest soccer player in the world, which makes one wonder how extensive access to him and his new team could yield such a boring sports docuseries. Still, that adequately sums up “Messi Meets America,” an Apple TV+ project whose first three episodes have all the heft of a latenight infomercial. Part of that, admittedly, has to do with the way that Messi carefully protects his image, exhibiting a knack for speaking very earnestly in classic sports cliches. “Can one guy make that big of a difference?” Miami Herald sportswriter Michelle Kaufman asks early on. “Messi Meets America” premieres October 11 on Apple TV+.

Apple TV, which is streaming Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Mexican team Cruz Azul, is charging as much as $49 for Friday’s soccer spectacular. However, that price tag gets you access to MLS Season Pass, Apple’s new soccer package that includes in-season games plus the Leagues Cup that kicks off tonight. Last month, Apple slashed the price of MLS Season pass by half since the season is nearing its end. Last Sunday, Apple TV streamed a live unveiling event for free from Inter Miami’s stadium, giving fans their first look at the international superstar. Apple has also bought billboards in Miami displaying the goat emoji draped in Inter Miami pink, with the slogan “now on Apple TV.”

Messi, seven months removed from leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, was presented to fans during a glitzy event called 'The Unveil' at Miami's home stadium. "We are going to have a good time and great things are going to happen. The event was being held a day after Inter Miami announced that Messi signed a contract that will keep him with the club through 2025. Messi had also been linked with a return to Barcelona, the Spanish club he helped claim 10 league titles, four Champions League crowns and three Club World Cups. But in early June Messi announced his decision to join Inter Miami in an interview with Mundo Deportivo and Sport newspaper even though a contract had not yet been signed.
