CNN —Since joining Manchester City, Erling Haaland has broken record after record, setting expectations for himself that are seemingly impossible to reach. Yet, somehow, he has continued breaking records this season, scoring nine goals in just four Premier League games – the most prolific start to a season ever, surpassing the previous best of eight set by Wayne Rooney. Haaland has been so dominant this season that his individual total of nine goals is more than any Premier League team, except his own Manchester City, has managed between them. And, on Saturday, only the width of a goalpost denied the Norwegian star an unprecedented run of hattricks in three consecutive Premier League games. Already, Haaland has become the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals, doing so in just 48 games – 17 faster than Andrew Cole’s previous record.

Unfortunately, that word — the key word in all of this — is not one that can be used here. Or, if you are Gary Lineker, you might use the word on a podcast to describe an England performance at the European Championship. Reduced to its core elements, then, it might be hard — particularly to outsiders — to understand why the word has caused such consternation. Lineker, a respected former player and a judicious pundit, suggested that England had played poorly. Gareth Southgate, the England coach, spoke after the very same game of needing to “hit the reset button.” The players have admitted that they have not performed well thus far.

CNN —Newcastle United was denied a famous away win over Paris Saint-Germain after the French side was awarded a late penalty following yet another controversial VAR decision. Trailing 1-0 to Alexander Isak’s 24th-minute goal, PSG swarmed the Newcastle goal throughout the second half but without any success. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak awarded the penalty after being recommended by the VAR to view the pitchside monitor. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Britain's BBC said its top stars such as Gary Lineker could opine on political issues on social media but must stop short of campaigning, in new guidelines prompted by a row over the sports presenter's comments about immigration policy earlier this year. He was reinstated after a public backlash and near mutiny at the broadcaster, which has struggled to balance impartiality with its employees' ability to speak to millions of people on social media platforms. Lineker said on X, formerly know as Twitter, that the new guidelines were "very sensible". The BBC's journalists and others working in news and current affairs will continue to have to abide by the strictest rules on impartiality, the guidance said. Other BBC staff or freelancers will not be required to uphold the BBC's impartiality, but they must be civil and not bring the broadcaster into disrepute.

Wimbledon has dubbed Thursday "Environment Day" and began it with a panel discussion hosted by former footballer-turned TV presenter Gary Lineker. But I think it’s like ‘come let's work as a team, collaborate'. It's never going to be perfect, but at least we can try to work together." "Don't think of us as competitors, think of us as potential collaborators and allow the amplification that our athletes and that sport can give to this," he said. Wimbledon responded by saying Barclays was committed to "creating access to sport for all" and that having a positive impact on the environment is central to the tournament.

MANCHESTER, England, May 26 (Reuters) - As a big fan of Apple TV's popular soccer comedy "Ted Lasso", Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he was happy to appear as himself on the show's penultimate episode that aired this week. "As a family, my little daughter Valentina and my wife, we enjoy a lot to watch the show," Guardiola told a press conference on Friday. "We are big fans, and when they offered a cameo, I said why not and I could meet the actors. The fictional AFC Richmond beat City in the episode called "Mom City", and Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, and Guardiola shake hands after the game ends. The scene was shot before an actual City game at the Etihad and the cast and crew returned to watch a recent game there.
The BBC settled the dispute with Mr. Lineker by vowing to review its policies governing the use of social media by its on-air personalities. The episode prompted calls by the opposition Labour Party for Mr. Sharp’s resignation. The current prime minister, Rishi Sunak, appeared to distance himself from Mr. Sharp, even though the two had once worked together at Goldman Sachs, where Mr. Sunak and Mr. Sharp had both been bankers. Mr. Sharp, a major donor to the Conservative Party, said he regretted not raising the issue of the loan with an appointments panel before he took the post of chairman. “I would like once again to apologize for that oversight — inadvertent though it was — and for the distraction these events have caused the BBC.”
London CNN —The embattled chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporaration (BBC), Richard Sharp, resigned on Friday after a report found he failed to disclose his involvement in facilitating a loan of almost $1 million to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Sharp claimed the breach was “inadvertent and not material,” but said he was resigning to “prioritise the interests of the BBC.” He had previously denied involvement in the arrangement, or the existence of a conflict of interest as the loan happened before his appointment as head of the public broadcaster. Adam Heppinstall’s report however found Sharp “failed to disclose potential perceived conflicts of interest” to the cross-party panel of MPs which advised ministers on who to appoint. “There may well have been a risk of a perception that Mr Sharp would not be independent from the former Prime Minister, if appointed,” the report said. The former England soccer captain was later reinstated after his fellow presenters refused to go on air without him, and the corporation announced a review into what freelancers outside of its news arm (such as Lineker) can and cannot say on social media.
The investigation, initiated by the public appointments watchdog, examined the way in which Sharp was selected by the government to chair the corporation in 2021. Specifically, it looked at whether Sharp fully disclosed details of his role in facilitating an 800,000 pound ($1 million) loan for Johnson before he was named chairman. The report found that, while he had breached the government's code for public appointments, that breach did not necessarily invalidate his appointment. "I have decided that it is right to prioritise the interests of the BBC," Sharp said in a statement. The report mentions Johnson's Downing Street office as having recommended Sharp as "a strong candidate" for the role, which attracted 23 applications.

Lineker wins appeal over 4.9 million pounds tax bill

March 28 (Reuters) - Sports presenter Gary Lineker won his appeal against Britain's tax authority (HMRC) on Tuesday over a bill that totalled 4.9 million pounds ($6.03 million). Lineker, who presents BBC's 'Match of the Day' and also worked on BT Sport's coverage, was pursued by the HMRC over taxes on income from both broadcasters from 2013-14 to 2017-18. The HMRC said he was an employee of both BBC and BT Sport at the time but a judge ruled the 62-year-old was a freelancer and had contracts with both broadcasters. "The effect of my conclusions is that because there were direct contracts, between the BBC and Mr Lineker and BT Sport and Mr Lineker, the intermediaries legislation (IR35) does not, and cannot as a matter of law, apply," Tribunal Judge Brooks said in a statement. "Accordingly, and notwithstanding GLM (Gary Lineker Media)being a partnership, that is the end of the matter and the appeal succeeds."
Lineker off BBC's FA Cup coverage after losing his voice

March 19 (Reuters) - Gary Lineker will not be on the BBC for their FA Cup quarter-final coverage on Sunday because he has lost his voice, the corporation said, with Alex Scott taking his place. Lineker was struggling with his voice during live coverage of Manchester City's 6-0 thrashing of Burnley on Saturday and it did not improve. The 62-year-old presenter was set to be at Sunday's quarter-final between Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion and fourth-tier Grimsby Town. "I've been silenced... literally, by a nasty cold so, annoyingly, won't be working at Brighton this afternoon," Lineker wrote on Twitter. loadingThe former England captain had returned to host BBC's soccer show coverage a week after his suspension for criticising government immigration policy caused a row over the broadcaster's impartiality rules.
LONDON, March 18 (Reuters) - Former England football captain Gary Lineker returned to host the BBC's flagship soccer show on Saturday, a week after his suspension for criticising government immigration policy caused a row over the broadcaster's impartiality rules. loadingBBC managers reversed their decision to suspend Lineker, the broadcaster's highest-paid presenter, after his colleagues refused to work in solidarity last weekend, forcing it to air soccer matches without normal commentary. So it's good to get back to some sort of normality and be talking about football again," Shearer said. After reinstating Lineker, the BBC said it would review how its impartiality guidelines applied to freelance presenters' use of social media. Interior minister Suella Braverman has described these arrivals as an "invasion" and is seeking to deport thousands of migrants to Rwanda.
The Guardian did not publish a headline claiming that BBC sports presenter Gary Lineker would “never have been censored if he had been white.”The Guardian masthead is viewable across the upper-third of the website screenshot, with a supposed headline that reads: “Gary Lineker spoke his mind. “We can confirm that the link shared has never been a published Guardian headline or story,” a spokesperson for The Guardian told Reuters. Gary Lineker is the BBC’s highest-paid sports broadcaster and a former soccer star. LONDON—The British Broadcasting Corp. on Monday struck a deal with its top sports presenter that will allow him back on air, days after it ignited a staff rebellion by suspending him for tweeting about politics. After a tumultuous weekend that saw the broadcaster dramatically cut back its sports coverage, BBC Director-General Tim Davie said the company would allow Gary Lineker back on air and promised to carry out an independent review of the company’s social-media guidelines, which he said had gray areas.
BBC commentator Gary Lineker was suspended over tweeting about politics. LONDON—The British Broadcasting Corp. now finds itself caught in a drama of its own making: By suspending a top sports broadcaster over tweeting about politics, it has inadvertently forced itself into the center of a U.S. style culture war. On Sunday, the state-funded broadcaster for the second day had to limit the availability of its sports programming after dozens of staff and leading sports announcers walked off in protest at the suspension of retired footballer Gary Lineker, one of England’s most popular sports figures and the BBC’s highest-paid broadcaster.
BBC engulfed in an impartiality storm of its own making

“There is a long-established precedent in the BBC that if you’re an entertainment presenter or you’re a football presenter, then you are not bound by those same rules” on impartiality, former director-general Greg Dyke told BBC Radio 4 over the weekend. BBC Director General Tim Davie has made protecting impartiality one of his major priorities. Oli Scarff/AFP/Getty ImagesMore problematic still is that the same thorny questions about impartiality extend to the BBC’s leadership. “It’s a mess, isn’t it?” former BBC executive Peter Salmon told the cooperation’s flagship political presenter Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday. “He’s got views, he’s got passions … it may be that Gary has outgrown the job, and his role in the BBC.”
BBC seeks to end crisis by reinstating Gary Lineker
  + stars: | 2023-03-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, March 13 (Reuters) - Britain's BBC said sports presenter Gary Lineker would return on air after the corporation agreed to review its social media guidelines to settle an escalating row over its impartiality. The BBC said Lineker had breached its impartiality rules by comparing the rhetoric of Britain's interior minister Suella Braverman to the language used in 1930s Germany. But its decision to take him off air led to charges that it had bowed to pressure from the government. "Gary is a valued part of the BBC and I know how much the BBC means to Gary, and I look forward to him presenting our coverage this coming weekend," BBC Director General Tim Davie said in a statement on Monday. Reporting by Sarah Young; editing by Kate HoltonOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Gary Lineker's tweets and the BBC's response caused public backlash and a weekend of disrupted sports programing as fellow presenters walked out in protest. LONDON — The BBC, Britain's public service broadcaster, is trying to navigate itself out of crisis mode following a mutiny within its sports department regarding social media usage. The BBC suspended Lineker, who is employed by the broadcaster on a freelance basis, on Friday. "We consider [Lineker's] recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines," a BBC statement read. The BBC's response led to walkouts among Lineker's colleagues, which disrupted sports programing across Saturday and Sunday.
BBC sports commentator Gary Lineker was suspended after publishing tweets criticizing the U.K. government’s new policies on migrants. LONDON—The British Broadcasting Corp. has sparked one of its biggest crises in years by suspending its top sports commentator for criticizing the U.K. government on Twitter, leading to a staff rebellion and allegations that the state-funded broadcaster had compromised its independence by folding to government pressure. The venerable broadcaster yanked Gary Lineker, one of England’s most famous former football players and its highest paid presenter, from the country’s most watched football roundup show after he published tweets criticizing the government’s new policies on migrants, comparing them to Nazi Germany. The BBC said it considered Mr. Lineker’s “recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines” and said he “should keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies.”
