Despite a late push, she could not help her side finally overcome a USWNT in a gold medal match. After a cagey first half of today’s final, Swanson finally found space beyond the back line to break open a deadlocked match. It was a sequence worth of winning a gold medal and a fine way to mark a player’s 100th cap. But now, with a gold medal tucked under her arm, she definitely has the cachet to make whatever changes she wants. Hayes led the U.S. to its fifth Olympic gold medal.

PARIS — Last summer, Naomi Girma introduced herself to the world at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. She was the only field player to play every minute of last summer’s World Cup, too. — Sydney Leroux (@sydneyleroux) August 7, 2024Girma has deflected jokes about being named Secretary of Defense and questions about last year’s World Cup exit. “Last year, a lot of us were transitioning in, and now we’ve been on the national team,” Girma said in Lyon. Born a year after the 1999 World Cup, Girma has been following in the footsteps of quiet center-back leaders from Carla Overbeck to Becky Sauerbrunn, while forging her path.

The Olympic sendoff friendlies seemed to clue at an early theory: park the bus, play defense-first soccer and frustrate the United States until you find a chance to try an attack. Although having Coffey back from suspension helped toward that end, the United States was still thin in central areas. Berger and Naeher were both instrumental in keeping the score 0-0 throughout regulation, Berger moreso given the United States’ stronger attacking presence. Tournament Naeher is a different beast from any other level of her play. The United States heads to its first Olympic women’s gold medal match since the 2012 London Games.

The trio who had been so dominant in the group stage slowed in the knockout round opener. Sure, but Japan is also a very clinical team, able to cede possession and attack when they can create chances. Rodman’s extra-time goal keeps USWNT Olympic hopes aliveComing into the Olympics, Rodman’s role with the USWNT had largely been one of a creator. Throughout the group stage, few teams had as well-rounded a line anywhere on a field as the United States’ attack. The US Women’s National Team match with Germany has kicked off at the Paris Olympics, as the US side tries to find its stride during these Olympic Games. The USWNT’s frustrating, scoreless draw against Costa Rica in their final game before heading to Paris made for a neat encapsulation of the task ahead for head coach Emma Hayes. The old reliable stars of the team’s golden generation are largely gone. “Any new player coming in, that means you’re one of the best in the country and you have every right to be here. That means this means something, and you’re playing on one of the best teams in the world.

Jeff Rueter and Steph Yang dissect how the U.S. took the top spot in Group B with one game to go. Swanson crashed the box for the second U.S. goal, catching Smith’s rebounding shot off Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. In the second half, everyone was looking tired, especially with no rotation in the starting XI from the first game. For a second straight game, Williams was brought on late to ice the game as a pressing-minded forward. Ultimately, Sonnet looked the part throughout the second half.

It was a well-deserved opening after the U.S. had hammered at Zambia’s goal for 15 minutes straight, including two attempts off the crossbar and a first-minute toe-poke from Lindsey Horan that went just wide. 🤯 📺 USA Network & Peacock | #ParisOlympics pic.twitter.com/Dnx2xioNTC — NBC Olympics & Paralympics (@NBCOlympics) July 25, 2024Following Trinity Rodman’s opening goal, Zambia’s defense was caught in two minds. The additional open terrain catered to the dynamic forward line of Swanson, Smith and Rodman, as the trio weaved about to find pockets to exploit. After the game, Hayes said the decision was down to mitigating risks. Washington CNN —US women’s soccer legend Alex Morgan will not be on the team’s roster for the Olympic Games next month in Paris, a symbol of the changing of the guard going on inside the women’s national team. The 22-player roster, which includes 18 players going to Paris and four alternates, includes only eight players from the 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021 in Tokyo, and 10 members of the 2023 World Cup team. She acknowledged the roster for Paris will have less experienced players than previous tournaments with an eye toward development. “I’m not looking backwards, we have to look forward with a group of players that have put that World Cup behind them. "It has been such an honour to be able to wear this shirt, play with all these players and live out my childhood dream," Rapinoe said at the end of the game. With 203 caps and 63 goals for her national team, the veteran played in four World Cups, winning in 2015 and 2019, and helped the U.S. to claimed the Olympic gold at the 2012 London Games. Her activism and off-field personality brought her to achieve household fame after supporting causes such as LGBT+ rights, speaking out against racism and standing up for equal pay in women's soccer. Rapinoe is scheduled to play her last National Women's Soccer League regular-season game with OL Reign on Oct. 6 against Washington Spirit in Seattle. The U.S. exited in the round of 16 after suffering a shock 5-4 shootout defeat by Sweden. "I don't think everyone was fully prepared, and that's on us as well." Horan, 29, said the team did not look relaxed during the tournament, where they finished second in their group behind the Netherlands. That solace, though, is an illusion, and so too is the idea that the United States was eliminated by a millimeter. There is a certain irony in the fact that it was against Sweden that the United States, so limp and insipid earlier in the tournament, started to show signs of life. There were glimpses, in Melbourne, Australia, of what this team might one day be. The United States was only in position to be knocked out by Sweden because it had failed to beat both the Netherlands and — more troubling — Portugal in the group stage. The United States, the two-time reigning champion and pretournament favorite and great superpower of women’s soccer, won only one game in Australia and New Zealand, and that was against Vietnam.

This was a changing of the guard in women’s soccer. For decades, ever since that first World Cup win in 1991, the US has been the standard-bearer in women’s soccer, the dominant force on the pitch, its leading voice off it. Three of the four former World Cup winners are no longer in the tournament, while the so-called underdogs have thrived. As the US team itself posted on social media after the match, “This year’s Women’s World Cup is a testament to the growth of women’s soccer on a global scale …”The penalty shootout went to sudden death. But there is light to add to these dark days for US women’s soccer because this is a team which promises to have a better future.

Instead they packed their bags after the scoreless draw as the United States stayed behind, left to wonder how their journey for an unprecedented third consecutive title had nearly turned into utter disaster. Had they exited, it would have been the worst World Cup performance for the top-ranked team and would have marked the first time that defending champions had gone out in the group stage. Doing so will require that the United States resolve their lack of synchrony, with Andonovski previously blaming the starters' lack of playing minutes together. "We have to get on the same page when it comes down to the final goal, to the final pass and execution." "I wouldn’t say that the midfield three was disjointed - obviously we wanted to see them more connected," said Andonovski.
