And Gaetz himself has been making calls to GOP senators and visiting his own loyalists in the House GOP. The pressure is all building ahead of a planned Wednesday meeting of the House ethics panel, which is expected to discuss the fate of the report. WASHINGTON — Republican senators are preparing for a robust vetting of Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the Justice Department, with a keen interest in details from a House Ethics Committee investigation into the former congressman from Florida. The Ethics Committee has jurisdiction only over sitting House members. Blanche is the second of two Trump attorneys believed to be targeted by foreign hackers. Chinese hackers have also targeted other top figures in Trump’s orbit, including Trump himself and the vice president-elect, Sen. JD Vance. The sophisticated hacking effort has unnerved national security officials because of the deep access that the Chinese hackers have gotten to prominent Americans’ call and phone records. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, for example, has directed its employees to only use Microsoft Teams and Cisco WebEx to conduct work-related business involving non-public information, a CFPB spokesperson told CNN on Thursday. There is no evidence that the CFPB has been specifically targeted by the hackers, the spokesperson said.

South Dakotans voted down a ballot measure that would have put abortion rights in the state constitution, instead keeping the state’s near-total ban on abortion. Voters have overturned state abortion bans in a number of red states since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, but South Dakota is an extremely conservative state. Life Defense Fund first sued Dakotans for Health in June, challenging the abortion petition signatures the organization submitted to the state. A judge dismissed the motion, which prompted Life Defense Fund to file an appeal in state Supreme Court. A state Supreme Court justice kicked it back to a lower court.

Henry McMaster to reduce his sentence to life in prison without parole because of his spotless prison record and willingness to be a mentor to other inmates. A prison employee announced the execution could begin at 6:01 p.m. Moore took several deep breaths that sounded like snores over the next minute. Three jurors who condemned Moore to death in 2001, including one who wrote Friday, sent letters asking McMaster to change his sentence to life without parole. They were joined by a former state prison director, Moore’s trial judge, his son and daughter, a half-dozen childhood friends and several pastors. Moore is the second inmate executed in South Carolina since it resumed executions.
