On his "Money for Couples" podcast, self-made millionaire and money expert Ramit Sethi often meets couples with varying levels of income and net worth who feel badly about money. Many of the couples think they just need more money to feel better, but that's often not the case, Sethi tells them. For many people, how you feel about money is uncorrelated to the amount in your bank account. The couple earns a combined $365,000 a year and have a $1.5 million net worth, yet they constantly disagree about financial decisions and can't stop worrying about money. Nathan and Linda know their numbers, maybe even too well.

Eden Espinosa, an original “Wicked” cast member who played Elphaba on Broadway over seven years and inspired some of the score’s famous riffs. Becoming Elphaba and GlindaKristin Chenoweth (left) and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba on Broadway. It was Dearman's second time performing in the show — she played Glinda before returning as Elphaba. Some “Wicked” journeys are more winding: Espinosa played Elphaba on and off for seven years. No matter how long they spent with their characters, the actresses agreed — they’d grown with Elphaba and Glinda.

Interchange fees, also known as swipe fees, are paid from a merchant's bank account to the cardholder's bank, whenever a customer uses a credit card in a retail purchase. "In 2023 alone, Visa and Mastercard charged merchants more than $100 billion in credit card fees, mostly in the form of interchange fees," Durbin told the committee. Visa and Mastercard, however, stand by their swipe fees. But the current high credit card swipe fees for retailers translate to higher prices for consumers, the National Retail Federation told the committee in a letter ahead of the hearing. "Last year, the average American spent $1,100 in swipe fees, more than they spent on pets, coffee or alcohol."

That was back in August 2023, just one year on from her mounting a camel for the first time. “It really starts with an awareness of animals and awareness of your own body,” she told CNN. The racing of dromedaries, a single-humped species also known as the Arabian camel, is a centuries-old passion in the region and endures in both popularity and lucrativeness, with prize money reaching multi-million-dollar figures. The ADCRC launched the UAE’s maiden all-women camel racing team — a development that immediately piqued Dees’ interest. “The outcome of the race is so reliant on the fitness and quality of the camel,” Dees explained.

The judge’s ruling, at the request of California Attorney General Rob Bonta, gives the Alameda County prosecutor’s office 60 days to retry 71-year-old Curtis Lee Ervin or let him go free. Bonta conceded the Alameda prosecutors in the Ervin case illegally excluded Black jurors. Alameda County now must make a decision by September 30. Last month, she announced plans for the resentencing of Dykes and one other death row inmate for Batson violations. Those notes showed a bias against potential Jewish and Black jurors, according to the DA’s office.

CNN —Sealed bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup ink, including some marked as sterile, contained millions of potentially dangerous bacteria, according to new research by the US Food and Drug Administration. Earlier studies have found high levels of bacterial contamination within sealed and sterile bottles of ink. Unfortunately, the study’s findings were not surprising, said John Swierk, an assistant professor of chemistry at Binghamton University, State University of New York, who has studied tattoo ink contamination. For example, using the same gloves to touch a client and the ink bottle is a hazard that can lead to tattoo ink contamination. “Tattoo inks are in the process of being regulated due to the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (of 2022) but much of that law dealing with tattoo inks has yet to be implemented,” Swierk said.

Opinion | How to Deal With the National Trauma of Jan. 6
  + stars: | 2024-06-23 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “In Search of the Lost Altar of Oblivion,” by Linda Kinstler (Opinion guest essay, June 16), about how America is still processing the events of Jan. 6 and other traumas:Like Dr. Kinstler, I too have been unable to find any surviving trace of an “altar of oblivion” at the Acropolis in Athens. Perhaps the plain answer is that there never was one. After all, the ancient Athenians were far too smart to erect an architectural contradiction in terms — a memorial to the very act of forgetting. But forgetting is what oblivion is all about, and oblivion — not for themselves but for inconvenient truths — is what careerist politicians then and now have always craved, eager as they are to sweep embarrassing facts under history’s carpet. Remembering the Jan. 6 insurrection in all its ugliness, not forgetting it and naïvely moving on, is precisely what America needs if we are to preserve a democracy worth saving.

On March 4, Judge Tanya Chutkan presided over jury selection for a criminal trial in a Jan. 6, 2021, case. On his first day in court, Mr. Nester sat next to his attorney wearing a collared shirt and a tie, his glasses perched atop his gray hair. He glumly surveyed the potential jurors seated in the benches behind him, 12 of whom would later that week determine his fate. Mr. Trump, whose criminal trial has been put on hold pending Supreme Court review, spent that week on the campaign trail. Mr. Nester is the among the latest in a long string of Jan. 6 insurrectionists who have over the past three and a half years sat for trial in the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S.

The announcement will kick off months of talks that could take up to a year before the European Parliament rubber stamps the target. The European Greens — a faction of environmentally conscious lawmakers from several countries — are expecting big losses in the vote, after making sweeping gains in the 2019 election. “We’re looking at a European Parliament that is more in favor of regulatory freedom for member states,” Dufour said. The Greens had been successful in achieving a strong climate agenda through the EU parliament, he added. She said new conservative or even far-right lawmakers may also back some ambitious climate policies because so many make sense in terms of economics and security, as well.

The clock is ticking for Congress to shore up Social Security benefits. The latest projections from Social Security's actuaries show the program's trust funds are due to run out in 2034, at which point 80% of benefits will be payable. In 1983, Social Security's trust funds were also close to depletion when a host of changes were passed by Congress. More from Personal Finance:Will Social Security be there for me when I retire? One Social Security disability applicant finally had a hearing scheduled for this month but did not live until the scheduled date, according to David Camp, interim CEO at the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives. While the patient sought help with 825 days left to live, Social Security wasted more than 500 days with its delays. From 2010 to 2022, claims for Social Security disability benefits declined by 37%, while claims for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, fell by 49%, according to Camp. Eliminating that phase of the process could free disability determination services staff to work on initial disability claims and reduce backlog, she said. REUTERS/Yuri Gripas/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Exxon Mobil Corp FollowSept 27 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Wednesday refused to overturn a California county's decision to block Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) from using tanker trucks to ship crude oil from coastal facilities to inland refineries while a ruptured pipeline is fixed. The company has said trucks are "essential" to restarting three offshore oil platforms and an onshore oil processing facility that have been shuttered since the spill. Gee's decision did not address Exxon's claims that the board's decision amounted to an unconstitutional taking of the company's property and other constitutional claims. Attorney Linda Kropp, who represented several of those groups, said Exxon's trucking plan is "reckless, dangerous and totally unwelcome" and said it puts the community at risk of oil tanker crashes. Exxon had sued in May 2022, alleging the board's denial was a "prejudicial abuse of discretion."

That would cost the EU its figurehead in international climate negotiations and the politician who drove through Europe's toughest measures yet to cut planet-warming emissions. The move was at odds with the U.S., and faced ire from some EU countries who felt it gave too much away. In Germany, this age group can vote in European elections, and the same goes for Belgium, on request. And, when Scotland held its referendum on Scottish independence back in 2014, it lowered the voting age from 18 to 16. In the US, some cities in the states of Maryland and California have lowered the voting age to 16 in certain local elections. The US-based NGO National Youth Rights Association argues that 16- and 17-year-olds should participate on decision making on medical autonomy, curfew, drinking age and age discrimination. “They work and are subject to taxation without representation: income tax, sales tax, payroll taxes and more… The US should continue its democratic tradition of extending voting rights,” he added.

You may have heard that Social Security's funds are running low. Now, a new virtual tool from the American Academy of Actuaries lets you explore Social Security's woes and decide exactly what changes you would make to restore its solvency. Based on the Social Security Administration Board of Trustees' annual 2022 report, the funds may be depleted in 2035. The urgency of Social Security's issues has caught lawmakers' attention recently. During the State of the Union address in February, President Joe Biden prompted leaders from both sides of the aisle to stand to show their support for protecting Social Security and Medicare.
“Spoiler Alert,” the new film based on entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello’s heartbreaking 2017 memoir, certainly doesn’t have a storybook ending.
