A female boxer whose gender identity has recently been questioned won her first fight at the Paris Olympics on Thursday. Imane Khelif of Algeria defeated Angela Carini of Italy after Carini quit 46 seconds into the match. “Full support for our champion Imane Khelif, who is suffering a wave of unjustified hatred,” he wrote on X. Abderrahmane Hammad, Algeria’s minister of youth and sports, addressed concerns over Khelif’s gender identity Wednesday. “I strongly condemn the baseless attacks on our athlete, Imane Khelif, by certain foreign outlets,” he wrote on X.

Villepinte, France AP —Imane Khelif of Algeria won her opening Olympic boxing bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds. Carini and Khelif exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the bout — an extremely unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris. Several sports have updated their gender rules over the past three years, including World Aquatics, World Athletics and the International Cycling Union.

An Italian boxer forfeited her bout at the Paris Olympics after only 46 seconds on Thursday, refusing to continue to fight an Algerian opponent who had been banned from a women’s event last year in a dispute related to her gender. The Italian boxer, Angela Carini, withdrew after her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif, landed a powerful blow that appeared to strike Carini square in the face, knocking her head to the left. Khelif was permitted to compete at the Olympics even though she has been barred from some women’s competitions for not meeting eligibility requirements to compete in women’s events. Hong Kong CNN —China appears to have censored a photograph of two Chinese hurdlers embracing after a race because their lane numbers formed an accidental reference to the Tiananmen massacre in 1989. The image captures Lin Yuwei, from lane 6, and Wu Yanni, in lane 4, hugging following the women’s 100-meter hurdles final at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. As they stood together, stickers showing their lane numbers formed “6 4”, a pairing widely seen as a reference to June 4, 1989. That day Chinese military tanks rolled into the capital Beijing during a bloody crackdown to clear students protesting for democracy in Tiananmen Square. State broadcaster CCTV originally posted the photograph on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social media service, on Sunday night, but removed it from its account about an hour later, CNN has found.
