Sutskever announced his departure from OpenAI in May and launched his own AI startup focused on safety. Of the 11 cofounders of OpenAI from 2015, only Altman, Brockman (who, again, is on leave), and Wojciech Zaremba remain. Daniel Kokotajlo and William Saunders, who previously worked on OpenAI's governance and safety teams, respectively, left OpenAI in the first half of 2023. AdvertisementAdditionally, OpenAI cofounder John Schulman left in August to join OpenAI rival Anthropic — where Leike also landed. On Wednesday, Meta announced that Meta AI is on track to be "the most used AI assistant in the world."

OpenAI on Thursday announced a prototype of its own search engine, called SearchGPT, which aims to give users "fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources." Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, Alphabet investors have been concerned that OpenAI could take market share from Google in search by giving consumers new ways to seek information online. Alphabet shares were trading about 2.5% lower on Thursday, while the Nasdaq was up slightly. The SearchGPT announcement follows OpenAI's launch last Thursday of a new AI model, "GPT-4o mini." Last year, OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap told CNBC: "The world is multimodal.

OpenAI debuts mini version of its most powerful model yet
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Hayden Field | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
OpenAI will launch a new AI model, "GPT-4o mini," the artificial intelligence startup's latest effort to expand use of its popular chatbot, later on Thursday. The company called the new release "the most capable and cost-efficient small model available today," and it plans to integrate image, video and audio into it later. The mini AI model is an offshoot of GPT-4o, OpenAI's fastest and most powerful model yet, which it launched in May during a livestreamed event with executives. The mini AI model announced Thursday is part of OpenAI's push to be at the forefront of "multimodality," or the ability to offer a wide range of types of AI-generated media, like text, images, audio and video, inside one tool: ChatGPT. GPT-4o mini will be available later Thursday to free users of ChatGPT, along with ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, and it will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise users next week, the company said in a release.

As part of the deal, OpenAI will gain access to Reddit's Data application programming interface, or API, "which provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit," according to a release. In exchange, Reddit will begin offering certain AI features to users and moderators, powered by OpenAI, which will also become a Reddit advertising partner. OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap spearheaded the deal, which was approved by the company's board, the release said. The update brings GPT-4 to everyone, including OpenAI's free users, Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati said Monday in a livestreamed event. Reddit, which went public in March and reached a record close a few days after its initial public offering, is back to trading near its high of $65.11.

OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap says generative AI as it is today will be "laughably bad" within a year. The exec predicts ChatGPT could soon take on more "complex work" and be a "great teammate." The tech giant is set to release its latest language model, GPT-5, as early as this summer. One OpenAI executive predicts generative AI tools like its own at the moment will be nothing compared to what's to come. "That's going to be a different way of using software," the OpenAI exec said on the panel regarding AI's foreseeable capabilities.

OpenAI has promised that ChatGPT Enterprise customers' data will not be used to train its models. Talking to potential customers from industries including finance, healthcare and energy, OpenAI executives highlighted a range of applications, such as call-center management and translation. Microsoft, the largest investor in OpenAI, offers access to OpenAI's technology through its Azure cloud and by selling Microsoft 365 Copilot, a productivity tool powered by OpenAI's models targeting enterprises. Some executives in the audience at the events asked why they should pay for ChatGPT Enterprise if they are already customers of Microsoft, attendees said. Lightcap told Bloomberg last week more than 600,000 people signed up to use ChatGPT Enterprise and Team, up from around 150,000 in January.

OpenAI and Meta are close to unveiling AI models that can reason and plan, the FT reported. AdvertisementOpenAI and Meta are reportedly preparing to release more advanced AI models that would be able to help problem-solve and take on more complex tasks. Representatives for Meta and OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours. Getting AI models to reason and plan is an important step toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), which both Meta and OpenAI have claimed to be aiming for. Elon Musk, a longtime AI skeptic, recently estimated that AI would outsmart humans within two years.

This time last year, Anthropic was seen as a promising generative AI startup founded by ex-OpenAI research executives. "In our quest to have a highly harmless model, Claude 2 would sometimes over-refuse," Amodei told CNBC. Multimodality, or adding options like photo and video capabilities to generative AI, whether uploading them yourself or creating them using an AI model, has quickly become one of the industry's hottest use cases. But multimodality, and increasingly complex AI models, also lead to more potential risks. "Of course no model is perfect, and I think that's a very important thing to say upfront," Amodei told CNBC.

OpenAI, which burst into the mainstream last year thanks to the popularity of ChatGPT, is bringing its artificial intelligence technology to video. Sora can also generate video clips inspired by still images, and extend existing videos or fill in missing frames. With Sora, OpenAI is looking to compete with video-generation AI tools from companies like Meta and Google , which announced Lumiere last month. Sora is a diffusion AI model that, like ChatGPT, uses the Transformer architecture, introduced by Google researchers in a 2017 paper. "Sora serves as a foundation for models that can understand and simulate the real world," OpenAI wrote in its announcement.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is seeking trillions of dollars in investments to overhaul the global semiconductor industry, The Wall Street Journal reported. Altman could need to raise between $5 trillion and $7 trillion for the endeavor, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing one source. Nvidia has been the big moneymaker during the past year's generative AI boom, with its market cap more than tripling in 2023. Nvidia currently controls about 80% of that AI chip market with a current market cap of about $1.72 trillion, not far from overtaking tech giants like Amazon and Alphabet in market cap. Since then, OpenAI has announced a new board, including former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo.

And I think that's just a testament to the world being really big and messy, and that these systems are still evolving, they're still really in their infancy. That may be a thing that's useful in your work, or maybe a thing that's useful in your life, or it may just be a fun thing – it may just be that you create a funny GPT and it's a cool thing to have. High-level, we always knew that we wanted to have a structure that, at its core, retained the original OpenAI – the OpenAI nonprofit. So that's the first thing to understand, I think, about OpenAI: It's not a normal company in that sense. We have shared that we have an initial board now, and expect to add more board membersWhat's the general mood like at the company right now?

Some companies expect AI to be an ultimate solution, but it doesn't work like that, he said. Generative AI programs, like ChatGPT, have been used by individuals for school, business, and more. For Lightcap, the most overhyped aspect of AI is that it can completely transform a business "in one fell swoop."
