Oracle announces new AI-powered electronic health record
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( Ashley Capoot | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Oracle's new offering could help boost its position within the fiercely competitive EHR market, where it has struggled to maintain its footing in recent years. It's almost like having your own resident," Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, told CNBC in an interview. Ideally, this will allow doctors to spend less time searching through records and more time caring for patients, Oracle said. An electronic health record, or an EHR, is a digital version of a patient's medical history that's updated by doctors and nurses over time. The new EHR has been in the works since Oracle acquired Cerner, but it was not built on top of Cerner's existing infrastructure, Verma said.

China News Service | China News Service | Getty ImagesBEIJING — Chinese IPOs in the U.S. and Hong Kong are set to increase next year, analysts said, as some high-profile listings outside the mainland this year raise investor optimism over profitable exits. Last week, Horizon Robotics — a Chinese artificial intelligence and auto chip developer — and state-owned bottled water company CR Beverage went public in Hong Kong. The firm noted that Chinese delivery giant SF Express is planning for a Hong Kong IPO next month, while Chinese automaker Chery aims for one next year. Still, the overall pace of Hong Kong IPOs this year is slightly slower than expected, George Chan, global IPO leader at EY, told CNBC in an interview earlier this month. Hong Kong, then New York

Oracle on Monday announced it intends to join a new federally-backed medical network that will make it easier for clinics, hospitals and insurance companies to share patients' data. Oracle, which acquired the medical records giant Cerner for $28 billion in 2022, is the latest major vendor to support TEFCA, joining its chief rival Epic Systems. Oracle needs to be approved to join TEFCA, but its interest in doing so helps to bolster the nascent network's credibility. "This is just a natural next step," Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, told CNBC in an interview. The main groups that participate in health-data exchanges through TEFCA are called qualified health information networks, or QHINs.

In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. US efforts to produce semiconductor chips will continue regardless of who wins the election. AdvertisementNo matter who wins the presidential election this November, President Joe Biden can rest easy knowing one thing: The US's chip manufacturing push isn't going anywhere. The US has seen its share of overall chip production fall from 37% of the world's supply in 1990 to 12%. While many factories remain under construction, the federal funding has already helped boost US chip production. According to a report published last year by the trade and lobbying group Semiconductor Industry Association and Oxford Economics, the US semiconductor industry will face a shortage of 67,000 workers by 2030, including technicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

LONDON — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is exploring whether obesity drugs could be used to curb joblessness after signing a major investment deal with the U.K. The weight-loss treatment firm and creator of Zepbound announced Monday that it would commit £279 million ($364 million) to help tackle Britain’s significant health challenges — including obesity. Within that, the five-year trial, conducted in collaboration with Health Innovation Manchester, will also explore how weight-loss drugs impact “participants’ employment status and sick days from work,” the company said in a news release. The use cases for obesity drugs have been growing over recent months, with several drug regulators expanding GLP-1 drug labels for use in treating obesity-related comorbidities and other illnesses. The company said it anticipates making an additional £279 million of new investment into the U.K. over the coming years.

Shares of German life sciences company Bayer fell nearly 7% on Wednesday, after a U.S. court said it would review a case alleging that exposure to products of the company's Monsanto unit harmed individuals. Previously, an appeals court had overturned a $185 million award in the trial after finding flaws in the case in May, according to Reuters. Shares had tumbled more than 30% last year amid challenges including ongoing litigation over the Monsanto unit and high net debt. WeightWatchers' CEO of roughly two years, Sima Sistani, is out. AdvertisementIt's been a bumpy year for WW International, the company also known as WeightWatchers. In a leadership shake-up Friday, the weight-loss company announced CEO Sima Sistani is stepping down after roughly two years — effective immediately — and board member Tara Comonte is stepping up to serve as interim chief. Sistani helped push the company into the weight-loss drug space in 2023 through the $106 million acquisition of telehealth platform Sequence — which is now called WeightWatchers Clinic, and which prescribes weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. The telehealth purchase marked something of a pivot from the group support meetings and calorie-tracking menus WeightWatchers is known for, though the company also launched a behavioral program for patients on Ozempic.

Studying brain health among diverse populationsTo tackle the gap in knowledge, the authors studied participants enrolled in the United States-based All of Us Research Program between May 2017 and June 2022. The authors included only dementia, stroke and late-life depression in their list of brain health outcomes since those are some of the most prominent diseases that affect neurological, psychiatric and cognitive aspects of the brain. Of the 393,041 adults age 51 on average, about 10% belonged to sexual or gender minority groups. Of that subset, 97% identified as a sexual minority and 11% as a gender minority, but these two groups weren’t mutually exclusive. However, the reasons behind this effect remain elusive.”There is no evidence that being a sexual or gender minority alone causes worse brain health, experts said.
