☆ Bitfinex hacker sentenced to five years in prison for bitcoin money laundering scheme

A man whose 2016 hack of Bitfinex drained nearly 120,000 bitcoin from that cryptocurrency exchange was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for a money laundering scheme that he and his wife pulled off to hide the swiped crypto. The value of that bitcoin at the time of the Bitfinex cyberattack was just $70 million when it was stolen by Ilya Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein, 35, and his wife, Heather Rhiannon Morgan, pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy in federal court in Washington, D.C., in August 2023, about 18 months after their arrest. It was at that plea hearing that Lichtenstein first publicly admitted that he had been the hacker of Bitfinex. With credit for good behavior, which is standard in the federal penal system, Lichtenstein could be released from prison in less than two years.

The U.S. Forest Service says it will not hire seasonal employees in the next fiscal year because of expected cuts to its budget, just as fire seasons grow longer, hotter and deadlier. “As an agency, we have a responsibility to plan for the most conservative funding picture, and these actions reflect that reality,” Forest Service spokesperson Scott Owen said in a statement. New York City delivery workers who don't use cars have one of the deadliest jobs in the city. There are now more than 65,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers in the city, and about 80% of them use e-bikes and motorbikes. The city report found that 28.7% of e-bike or moped delivery workers experienced injuries that forced them to miss work, lose consciousness, or seek medical care. They're asking for wider protected bike lanes, or even separate lanes for e-bikes and mopeds, and charging facilities for e-bikes. Indeed, "New Yorkers are dependent on app delivery workers to keep them safe and fed during times of crisis," she added.

The first woman to take on a BMW Art Car was South African artist Esther Mahlangu, who in 1991 painted a 525i sedan. CNN —As accidental adverts for art shows go, a giant pooch made of flowers is a crowd pleaser. An art collector donated the largest art gift ever to a US university, Seattle University said. Property developer Richard Hedreen donated a $300 million collection to the university. IRAs held about $11.5 trillion in 2022, almost double the $6.6 trillion in 401(k) plans, according to the Investment Company Institute. Here's the problem, in the eyes of the Labor Department: 401(k) investors have certain protections that don't generally extend to IRA investments or the advice to move money to IRAs. "ERISA fiduciary duties are the highest fiduciary duties under U.S. law," said Josh Lichtenstein, partner at law firm Ropes & Gray. That advice typically generates compensation like a commission for the broker or agent, and the Labor Department is concerned those incentives may bias recommendations for certain investments that pay them more but aren't in an investor's best interests.

The authors studied 216,695 people who had participated in the Nurses’ Health Study, the Nurses’ Health Study II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, all of which recruited participants from around 1976 to 1989. Eating the most processed or unprocessed red meat was linked with a 51% and 40% higher risk of type 2 diabetes, respectively. But multiple biological factors could have affected the relationship between red meat and type 2 diabetes, the authors said. “Consistently reported, dairy, legumes and nuts are the best foods with which to replace the red meat,” she added.

The unemployment rate held steady at 3.8%, and came in slightly ahead of a 3.7% forecast. Broken down, it dipped to 4.3% from 4.4% among Hispanic women and held steady at 4.3% for Hispanic men. However, it does mark a stark from the depths of the pandemic when the group experienced the highest unemployment rate, according to Gould. Among Black men, the unemployment rate increased to 5.6% from 5%, and fell to 4.5% from 4.7% among Black women.
