The Vessel, the honeycomb-shaped tower in Manhattan which closed in 2021 after a series of suicides, reopened Monday with added safety features. The 150-foot attraction first opened in 2019 as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development on the West Side. North Carolina Department of Insurance communications director Jason Tyson estimated that about 139,000 properties in the state have flood insurance through the NFIP. Part of the problem with flood insurance is a common misconception that regular home insurance covers flooding, which is rarely the case, four experts knowledgable about flood insurance and disaster management told Business Insider. KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A weakened and “weird” Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, hitting the island with a storm that has killed two people so far and forced it to shut down for a second day with hundreds of flights grounded and financial markets closed. Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. All domestic flights were canceled for a second day, as well as 236 international ones. Typhoons often hit Taiwan’s east coast facing the Pacific, but Krathon is unusual in that it directly hit the west coast. Local media labeled it a “weird” storm for that reason, and because of how it hovered off the coast before reaching land.

In that report, from 2011, it estimated a one-month NFIP lapse could affect about 40,000 closings. The research was inspired by toddlers learning to count, said lead study author Diana Liao, a neurobiologist and senior researcher at the Tübingen lab. “They understand abstract numbers … and then plan ahead as they match their behavior to match that number,” Williams said. Cyberpunk and steampunk were terms popularized in the 1980s to describe science fiction or fantasy worlds that explore rebellion against authority and the ramifications of technology, whether through body augmentations in near-future dystopias or brass vehicles in Victorian-era settings. The offshoot silkpunk is a more recent creation by Ken Liu, a speculative fiction author whose Dandelion Dynasty series features a throne made of bamboo and silk with intricate jewel-like clockwork and a kite built from similar materials.
