The tactic, known as "tax-loss harvesting," involves selling losing brokerage account assets to claim a loss. "Tax-loss harvesting is a tried and true strategy to lower investors' tax bills," said certified financial planner David Flores Wilson, managing partner at Sincerus Advisory in New York. "Investors can benefit substantially over time" by tax-loss harvesting consistently throughout the year, Wilson said. What to know about the wash sale ruleTax-loss harvesting can be simple when you're eager to offload a losing asset. AdvertisementLately, creative workers are increasingly chasing their Hollywood dreams in production hubs far from Hollywood. FilmLA, which issues permits for production in the region, found that Greater Los Angeles' share of US-produced TV and film projects declined from 23% in 2021 to 18% last year. Brin said Lexington had attracted 30 film and TV projects so far this year, representing more than $2 million in local spending. Actually being on a set is only one part of entertainment production. While the power of Los Angeles is dispersing, no single "new Hollywood" is coming to take its place.

CNN —Authorities in Maryland are searching for a man facing several weapons charges after a colorful arsenal of firearms, including illegal “ghost guns,” was found in his home. A later search found multiple 3D-printed “ghost guns” without serial numbers, semi-automatic rifles, handguns and shotguns. The use of ghost guns is on the rise across the country with the Biden administration telling the Supreme Court that police departments have faced an “explosion of crimes involving ghost guns” in recent years. In 2017, police submitted about 1,600 ghost guns recovered at crime scenes for tracing. The Biden administration has tightened regulation on ghost guns as part of a series of actions related to gun safety.

But that hasn’t stopped abortion rights supporters from pushing for votes up and down the ballot. Across the South, supporters of abortion rights are using the issue to motivate voters. Although Texas does not have a statewide referendum on abortion, Rep. Colin Allred's Senate campaign has galvanized abortion rights supporters. It’s easier for Democrats to campaign on the issue, she said, because their party is more united in favor of abortion rights than Republicans are in opposition. That switch proved pivotal in passing the state’s abortion ban.

— Three people were killed and eight others were injured in central Mississippi early Saturday when at least two people opened fire into a group of several hundred people who were celebrating a school’s homecoming football win at an outdoor trail several hours after the game had ended, authorities said. The gunfire was preceded by a fight between some of the men at the celebration, but deputies hadn’t yet learned what sparked the fight, said Holmes County Sheriff Willie March. Anywhere from 200 to 300 people were on the trail celebrating, and the gunfire sent them fleeing, the sheriff said in a phone interview. “The shooting just started and people started running.”The shootings about five miles outside of Lexington, Mississippi, followed a football game several hours earlier at the Holmes County Consolidated School’s homecoming celebration. It has offered adherents myriad “exclusive” opportunities to join clubs to give counsel to Mr. Trump, and it has repeatedly claimed that Mr. Trump is personally reviewing lists of small donors. The New York Times looked at some 7,400 emails sent by the Trump campaign since Mr. Trump entered the presidential race. Ms. Harris, and before her Mr. Biden, have far outpaced Mr. Trump in fund-raising this cycle, including from small-dollar donors. But both in sheer number (about 75 emails per week, on average, throughout this campaign cycle) and in syntax, the former president’s campaign emails stand out. Similar questions have arisen about contests Mr. Trump’s campaign and political action committee have run in years past.

Lasers could take broadband where fiber optics can’t

One solution could come from a technology called “free-space optics” (FSO), which uses lasers to transfer data through the air. Fog and rain, but even simple air turbulence, are enough to disrupt the signal, which also requires a stable, direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver. So, despite the advantage of not requiring any licensing or regulation, unlike radio signals such as 5G, FSO broadband has yet to materialize as a commercial reality. Now, Virginia-based company Attochron says it’s ready to launch its own version of it — after more than 20 years of development. Enabling, not replacingAccording to Chaffee, the advantages of bridging the last mile with lasers are many, starting with the fact that it’s comparatively cheaper than laying fiber optics cables.

Unlike the more popular fixed-rate mortgage loans, ARMs can offer temporary relief for homebuyers who want to avoid paying higher mortgage rates — however, they also come with risk. That means when mortgage rates increase, many ARM loan holders, like Hernandez, experience the unpleasant shock of significantly higher monthly home payments. Mortgage rates have remained elevated, adding fuel to one of the most unaffordable housing markets in decades. To Hernandez, it made little sense to refinance the loan while the 30-year fixed mortgage rate remains higher than her new adjusted rate. Marquis said that taking out an ARM loan might be worthwhile for those with a higher risk appetite.
