HONG KONG — In Hong Kong, it’s pandas, pandas, everywhere. Its reigning pair, Ying Ying and Le Le, had twins in August, when Ying Ying become the world’s oldest first-time panda mother after years of failed breeding efforts. The panda windfall has inspired Hong Kong officials to talk about a “panda economy,” encouraging restaurants and businesses to launch panda-themed products. But that is still well below the more than 50 million visitors Hong Kong received from January to October of 2019, a period that includes the start of the protests. Other ideas for revitalizing Hong Kong, such as the “mega-event economy,” have hit roadblocks as political sensitivities remain high.

An engine failure forced pilots on a Quantas flight to make an emergency landing shortly after it took from an airport in Sydney, Australia. Passengers heard a loud bang shortly after flight 520 from Sydney to Brisbane left the runway on Friday afternoon, the airline said in a statement, adding that it was not an explosion. Engineers concluded after a preliminary inspection and confirmed the Boeing 737 jet suffered a contained engine failure, the statement added. “After circling for a short period of time, the aircraft landed safely at Sydney Airport,” Qantas’ chief pilot, Capt. The plane “was banking a lot” as it turned to prepare for its eventual descent back into Sydney, Willacy said.

It was the annual Kukur Puja festival in Nepal on Thursday, and dogs across the nation were draped in marigold garlands, marked with celebratory vermillion pigment and presented with overflowing platters of treats. Like Diwali in India, the five-day Hindu festival of Tihar, being celebrated this week in Nepal, is a festival of lights. Unlike Diwali, Tihar includes the worship of creatures, and Kukur Puja, on its second day, is dedicated to dogs. According to Hindu mythology, dogs are the messengers of Yamaraj, the god of death. All dogs, including pets, strays and working dogs, are worshipped.
