Two US Navy SEALs drowned during a January raid on a vessel smuggling weapons to the Houthis. A new investigation outlines a string of failures that led to that fatal outcome. AdvertisementTwo US Navy SEALs drowned during a raid to intercept smuggled weapons off the coast of Somalia earlier this year. An investigation found that their deaths were preventable and were ultimately caused by a string of failures in the lead-up to the dangerous mission. Their names were redacted in the investigation, but the Navy has already identified them as the two SEALs who died.

CNN —The drownings of two Navy SEALs during a maritime intercept off the coast of Somalia were preventable, caused by a lack of proper training and unclear guidance on effective flotation, a Navy investigation found. Loaded with gear for the intercept mission, the two Navy SEALs went under in less than a minute. “The entire tragic event elapsed in just forty-seven (47) seconds, and two [Naval Special Warfare] officers were lost to the sea,” the investigation found. Naval Special Warfare SEAL Team Three deployed on board the USS Lewis B. Puller in December 2023. The Navy highlights the need for “positive buoyancy” – the ability to stay afloat – for boarding team members.

Two days before his sentencing, Trump, they predict, will seek something never before allowed in the appellate courts in New York or in most states for that matter: an interlocutory appeal. AdvertisementEven Trump's Manhattan prosecutors are conceding that this is a legal monkey wrench to be reckoned with. "If New York's courts deny him a right to appeal, he can challenge the decision in federal court," said Paradis. If the federal district court in Manhattan says no, "he can appeal that to the second circuit federal court of appeals." This story has been updated to reflect Trump's federal court efforts, from August 29 to September 4, to further delay sentencing.

It could help former President Donald Trump's hush-money conviction survive the US Supreme Court immunity opinion. Trump's lawyers are about to file what's known as a 330.30 motion to set aside the verdict. The Supreme Court presidential immunity opinion bars official-act evidence. US Supreme Court/BITrump's lawyers now say there were at least four times that the judge improperly let Manhattan prosecutors show official-act evidence to the jury. When a dumpling of an old lady toddles into the animated charmer “Inside Out 2,” she is quickly shooed away by some other characters. Her name is Nostalgia, and those who wave her off — Joy and Sadness included — tell her it’s too soon for her to show up. If you’ve seen “Inside Out” (2015), your tear ducts will already be primed for the sequel. For much of her life, those emotions have been orchestrated by Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), a barefoot, manic pixie. When “Inside Out 2” opens, Joy is still running the show with Sadness, Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale) and Disgust (Liza Lapira) inside a bright tower called headquarters.

F1 dispute with Andretti Global draws in U.S. lawmakers

Anna Moneymaker | Getty ImagesA dispute over whether to accept American motorsports giant Andretti Global as Formula One's 11th team is reaching boiling point. It's the latest twist in the Andretti saga, which started in October 2023 when the sport's governing body, the FIA, approved the American team's bid to join the grid. Three months later, F1, the sport's commercial arm, quashed the bid, arguing that Andretti wouldn't be competitive in 2025 or 2026. These new entrants would also be obliged to operate out of a region not currently represented by F1 teams. It isn't just in Washington where support for Andretti is growing, explained Andretti.

A $418 million legal settlement in March upended the residential real estate market. It's the brainchild of Lewis Buckley and Allan Wood who met during a private home sale process that — you guessed it — involved no real estate agents. In the US, commissions on home transitions have hovered between 5% and 6% of the sale price for decades. In the UK, real estate agents charge a 1% to 3% of the property sale price, and then sellers usually have to hire someone else to handle the legal stuff. Even with the lowest 1% commission rate of a traditional estate agent, a homeowner would save £4,605 if they paid Hiizzy's £395 flat fee.

After Huey Lewis learned that a syndrome of the inner ear called Ménière’s disease had caused him significant hearing loss and left him unable to play or hear music, he faced the difficult task of having to tell his friends and peers. Letitia James won a $454 million judgment against Trump, his penalty for a decade of fraud. She and Trump are now fighting over her claims that he withheld evidence from her fraud probe. With Richard Lewis, Kvetching Was Charismatic
  + stars: | 2024-02-29 | by ( Jason Zinoman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
There were broadcasters (Howard Cosell) and the occasional talk show host (Joan Rivers), but no Jews leading a cast on prime time. Then in the final year of the decade, that changed, and a glut of anxious men arrived, kvetching, quipping and dating shiksas. For those who know him as the cranky friend of Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” it may be a surprise that Richard Lewis, who died at 76 this week, cut a seductive figure: clever, cool, darkly morose. (Second place: “Family Ties.”) But Lewis brought a nervy energy that pushed against the saccharine instincts of network sitcoms. He once told David Letterman, “The woman I’m with now insisted on having intercourse only with a raven on her shoulder.”

One objection to this vision focuses on my chosen location for this imagined near-future neo-America, given the possibility that climate change will render Texas or Arizona unfit for human habitation. It’s a real concern, and depending on your expectations for rising temperatures and water shortages you might bet on a Great Lakes renaissance instead. But you also shouldn’t necessarily bet against the adaptability of human beings who seem, to my own New England confusion, to really like to live in scorching heat. The deeper objection is a spiritual one, offered by Rod Dreher, who reliably outstrips me in pessimism and comes through again here. “Yes,” he responds, “it is better to live in a country and in a culture that is doing better, materially and otherwise, than all others.
